"I give up!!!"
Hello,

I have just officially "given up" on the UWA method of leveling up, and have decided to use a character editor. My opinion (rationalization) is that the game has a bug or two, and I'm tired of copying my saved game, leveling up, going back to the pre-level up game and ultimately deciding between hit points and statistic increases. I end up picking a happy medium. As a result, my level 13 priest has fewer hit points than my level 13 mages.

Incidently, I rolled all my characters with 26-29 bonus points, so I shouldn't have ended up where I did. I didn't start selectively leveling up til about level 10 (prior, I just took what I got.) As a result, my priest, who I'm planning to turn into a lord has piety 6 and vitality 10 (and they were much higher when the priest was level 1!!)

Anyway, my plan is to simply use the editor to correct what UWA does -- my thinking is I'll do a few level ups til I get a sense of how many HP the character can get, and then I'll use the editor to correct the stats that have dropped.

My question -- anyone know what a level up should look like? ie does anyone have character info from pre-UWA Wizardry that they'd be willing to share?

Incidently, I managed to defeat Werdna back in 1983 without benefit of editors -- but my stats didn't go down like this either!

Thanks,
Abby
who's vaguely sorry she threw out all her Apple II wiz stuff.

My suspicion is that in lieu of a real random number generator,
Wizardry's programming sneaks a look at the PC's clock to create
psudo-random numbers for changing character attributes when
levels are increased... and that this doesn't work well under Windows. It certainly hasn't for me under Win 98!

I seem to be getting better results running under pure MS-DOS
(actually PC-DOS 7). And oddly enough, under DOS, the game works
fine without Mo'slo, even on a 1.1 GHz Athlon.

Most random numbers come from the clock. it's the easiest way, as the number has to come from somewhere, and the clock is never the same, thus the results are always different, and more random.
I wouldn't be surprised if Wiz1 did it as well.
DOS - Time function
one little call, and done.
I don't know if Windows NT kernal allows it. it's not sophisticated, but I could see why, as directly accessing the clock, falls into the realm of Hardware Direct Access.
That is one more possibility to why many people have problems with Wiz1 on NT/2k/XP

You are only as brave as the challenges you take on

i have always just accepted the crappy attribute gains (or sometimes losses) and hit point gains...but i have noticed that when my character gets two consecutive +1hp level ups, the following are (im guessing) meant to compensate and i wind up with +25hp the next time around...i read somewhere that the computer has a general idea of how many hps a given character should have at a given level and hence the hps gained reflect where that particular character stands within his/her range

Someone reported once that a pen-and-paper version of Wizardry was also published, based on the crpg. Hit points were figured as follows:
For each level up, the number of hit dice were that level were rolled (e.g. 3 at level 3; 4 at level 4; etc.)
If the total was higher than the existing hit points, the character's hit points were increased to the new number.
If the total was lower than the existing hit points, the character's hit points were increased by 1.
In this manner, the hit points tended toward the average.
This also explains why, at the first level up, characters may get a large hit point increase, but this is rare at higher levels (unless you've had a series of 1-point level ups).
I cannot source that, but if correct, it would explain a lot on the hit point question.
(I have no answers on the attribute decreases.)
