"Party Info"
Hi. Long time fan, first time poster

I played Wiz 1 back in the day on both the Apple IIe and later the PC. I am now planning on taking a legit party through the series for old times sake... A prelude to Wiz 8.

My question is this... I want the party to look like this...

Ninja
Ninja
Samurai
Lord
Bishop
Bishop

I want the alignment to be good (what would be the best way to do this). Now this will take some time to do but hey it is worth it... What should I start these players out as to reach my desired outcome? Thanks all.

1. "RE: Party Info"
that's a great idea! i took a legit party through wiz 1, 2 and 3 a year or two ago, but then jumped straight to 6 and 7. so if you make it through 4 and 5, you are two up on me!

while it is possible to roll up a bishop and a samurai, i don't remember if you can roll up a lord or not... if you can, it would take a lot of patience! as for the ninjas, you have three options:

1. make one of them (or both) a thief. in the lower levels of the maze, you can find a "thieves dagger" which, when equipped and invoked, turns the character into a ninja! the cool thing about this, is when you find your thieves dagger, your thief will probably be level 10 - 15 or so, and a level 10 - 15 ninja is just awesome!

2. make one of them (or both) a fighter (or anything else). in the lower levels of the maze, again, you can find something that changes your characters profession. i think it is a coin? or something like that? anyway, when you equip and invoke, it changes your profession. so just use it until your dude becomes a ninja. (or a lord!)

3. make one of them (or both) anything, and just wait for them to have all 17s for their stats. this one takes patience.

i started like this:
samurai
fighter
thief
priest
bishop
mage

and finished like this:
samurai
lord (used the coin trick on the fighter)
ninja (used the thieves dagger trick on the thief)
priest
bishop
mage

hope this helps, and happy hunting!

3. "The merits of saints and thugs"
According to the manual, "you will never get enough bonus points to create a Lord or a Ninja" in the beginning. So either you raise your stats or use a magical item in order to change to these professions.
As for variety, I had the same party as Willow in the start and changed one Fighter to a Lord and the Thief to a Ninja, with the Coin of Power and the Dagger of Thieves, respectively. I like to have a Bishop for he is the only one capable of identifying the items you find in the maze, so you can decide if you keep it before you return to the inn. I don't know if it's my imagination, but I had the impression that my Ninja got more often killed than my Thief and wasn't able to disarm traps as well as the Thief did, so I changed him back to a Thief eventually. And perhaps I just have a faible for Thieves :p

Which version of Wiz1?

Ninjas:
I see 2 options:
1) Create characters with 18+ (preferably 25+) bonus points. Then 'correct' level ups if they lose a lot of attributes. Ninjas need all 17's, so make sure their attributes stay pretty even. Fight Murphy's Ghost to become Evil, change class, then let them run to become good.
2) Adventure on the 10th level enough to find 2 Thieves Daggers and invoke them to become Ninjas.

Samurai:
You can create one from the start with most races with 18 bonus points.

Lord:
Pretty similar to Ninja option #1. Play first as a Mage or Priest to have extra spells, fighter for hp, or Thief for fast leveling.

Bishops:
Play as elf mage or priest to start. When they learn all the spells (level 13-14), change them to the opposite class and learn all the spells. Finally, change them to a bishop. Bishops are very weak for a long time, and their experience costs are high. I have a level 15 bishop started as a bishop and he is practically useless. I would rather end up as a Mage or Priest knowing all spells instead. You will get more high level spells for your trouble. I would prefer Priest->Mage so that in the end you earn more high-level attack spells, such as Makanito and Tiltowait.

I see a problem in your party: 4 fighters. Only the first 3 can attack. You will be wasting a spot you could use for a Mage or Priest.

Some sample party progressions:

Fighter -> Ninja
Fighter -> Lord
Samurai
Mage -> Ninja
Elf Priest -> Mage ( -> Bishop )
Elf Priest -> Mage ( -> Bishop )

All the discussion brings up good points. What I have found to be an excellent party is only composed of 5 players.

Ninja-Lord-Samauri-Bishop-Bishop

Now I know it takes forever to make a Bishop with all spells, but it is worth it. In this senario, you have 3 sets of offensive spells (Mage) and 3 sets of defesive spells (Priest), you have three "fighters" and one "thief" for traps.

I recommend, after using the dagger of thieves, allow your ninja to be drained a level. His next level need only be reached in about 400,000 EP or so instead of (sometimes) over 1,000,000.

Good gaming!!

5. "Alignment"
Don't forget the original Wizardry featured character alignment
where good characters cannot venture with evil ones. My favouite party consisted of Samurai, 2 Ninja & 2 Bishops. All characters were evil except the Samurai (N). Thieves and Ninjas cannot be good by normal means, so you will have to start them as evil characters, make sure you don't fight any friendly parties and hope your thieves become good before you find a thieves dagger. You will have to develop good and evil characters separately until they change alignment. You can make your Samurai Neutral so he can venture with both good and evil characters.

Alignment is such a nuisance. I'm glad they did away with it...
