"Grimrock"
Well, I am liking it so far. I preordered (I thought it was going be more expensive, was pleasantly suprised at the price ... figure it is about the same $/hour of gameplay as Wiz8), downloaded it last night, installed it tonight.

I would like to be better equipped at the start, and meet some monsters sooner, but hey, that's just me. It seems to run a bit slow (probably because my laptop is at or below the minimum requirements, haven't bothered to check yet, or maybe I can use a different graphics setting), though in one area of the dungeon I did notice it sped up, then slowed down again when I left that area. By "speed", I am talking about the time it takes for movement to register or complete.

I feel like I am about through the first level ... enjoying it so far!

I've got it but I haven't started it yet. I've got a game of Betrayal at Krondor started that I want to finish 1st. Yeah, I know it's old but I love that game.

Another thing I didn't really check into was how many races and classes there were: 4 (Human, Minotaur, Lizardman, Insectoid) and 3 (Fighter, Mage, Rogue). I was expecting more, and more of the standard races (i.e. dwarf, elf) ... and how can you not have a priest/cleric .

One thing that kind of annoys me so far, is that you have to be facing the correct direction to pick stuff up. For instance, I see some garment laying ahead of me, I move forward, but even though it is in the same "square" with me, it is on my right, so I have to turn right, then pick it up. Same deal with levers ... I see it on the wall as I am walking up, but it is on the left or right, so I have to turn that way to be able to activate it, once I am adjacent. Not a show stopper, but on my "wish list".

I noted that it was a bit slow earlier. I turned down the resolution settings and that helped quite a bit (and I don't really notice anything less in the display).

I like this game (though haven't played it more than one hour yet), reminds me of the good old times when I sent my party into the dungeons of EyeofBeholder.
So far I don't have anything to critize. Even the sometimes static movements of the monsters have this nostalgia-flair

5. "RE: Grimrock - Level 3"
I keep hearing about Eye of the Beholder ... never played it. I am still enjoying this game, though a little ticked off at a couple of the puzzles.

Highlight below for spoilers:

On level 2, there is a teleporter or force field that requires you to press a button to deactivate, then move quickly through, before it reactivates. I tried numerous times, went all over the level looking for something else to trip, click, activate, change ... finally resorted to youtube and someone's walkthrough. They were just clicking and backing through, as I had tried NUMEROUS times. Then I tried starting to move backwards, before clicking the secret spot .. voila. Really? If I click the secret button, before starting to walk, I don't make it, but reverse the order of those two steps and I do? Ok.

Then, level 3 ... something about a "lone pillar of light" to open the door. Ok, there is an empty sconce (just begging for a torch) directly opposite the door. Place torch .. nothing. Ok, there are 2 other empty sconces around the corner from that other one. Try them, nothing. Ok, there are already two lit torches in the room, so, thinking "lone", remove those .. try each of the other three sconces one at a time, nothing. Try every sconce lit, nothing. Search room for other secrets, pull hair out, nothing. Resort to youtube walkthrough and ... the three empty sconces were all on a 1x1 wall ...essentially a "pillar" in the middle of the room. So, three torches in those sconces, and none in the other two ... voila. Argh. Really, the pillar had 4 sides, why 3 sconces?

I passed this two-three days ago...believe me, it's getting worse.
Till now all puzzles were "ok", with a little pause to have a walk and think about...whereas CODS really made me suffer once.

7. "Torches and food "
Well, I was going to post a few days ago that I was getting tired of managing torches and food ... I am beyond that point now .. and am tired of it ...

You can still see without a lit torch (which takes up a hand that would be otherwise useful in your party), but can't see those important secret spots in the walls. Hopefully there will be some longlasting light spell in my near future.

And either food is really scarce or I am taking too long, which is entirely likely, since I never seem to remember that you can drop some things through closed grates ... just like some monsters can attack through them, although you can't ... the dungeon is just not fair I tell you!

Yes, there's a "light spell", your mage just needs spellcraft lvl 10 for it.
Food is the problem and I'm doubting if a party will make it through the whole game without spotting every secret to fill the stocks.

I got the advice just "to let the party hunger, they won't starve, they just attack with half power. Of course they won't recover hit points through rest, but the crystals will heal them."

Don't know if that would satisfy me, so far I'm not down to the bones.

Well, you are just full of good news, aren't you :-? Just attack at 1/2 power? I barely survive battles as it is. And really, level 10? It should be level 1 or 2 ... ugh. The replayability just seems to keep slipping away. As it is, I have been playing Words with Friends more than this game lately.

Uh, I didn't mean to discourage you.
And my expression about spellcraft was wrong: you don't need lvl 10 to spell it, just 10 points in spellcraft...and that could be in mage's lvl 3 or 4 of course.

Maybe that motivates you: I made it through the game yesterday.
(with help of a walkthru for some puzzles in the last levels...)

True ... and I was not expecting this game to do that. I think my expectations were set just about right, as I have not been really disappointed with this game ... just a few things that bug me (besides the spiders, ha!)

I actually started another software project at home that has been sucking away a good deal of my "free" or play time ... I don't think I've played Grimrock now for about a week.

Between the Avengers coming out tomorrow, hosting a Cinco De Wino party Saturday, playing in a poker tournament (of champions) on Sunday, "my wife to murder, Guilder to frame for it" ... looking grim for Grimrock ... oh ya, let's not forget: traingin for the death ride: www.deathride.com
