"My New Year's Resolution: Make a game"
Don't get too excited ... I don't have the time, money, resources, (all of the) know-how ... or really enough energy, after the 16-month remodel.

But, I figure if I don't say "I'm going to do it" ... I'll never start. I imagine it will take me 5 years (or so) ... which would make it my son's graduation present from high school

It will be an RPG, inspired by Wizardry of course. I've been kicking around ideas, jotting down notes for gameplay and quests, items and monsters, heroes and villains, and such for a while.

I've recently picked a game engine to get the whole thing started: Irrlicht. It has been around a long time, seems very stable, has an active community ... and most important, when you download it and try the examples/tutorials ... they work! (Novel concept for some others out there).

Between flushing out the game details, learning 3d programming (at least Irrlicht-style), learning about all the 3d resources (like the "models" that you animate) ... and life in general, I figure 5 years is a decent ballpark estimate for now.

Further updates as news warrants ...

Good luck Rick. If I am still among the living when you get it done, I'll buy a copy.

You could be good on resolutions for the next few years.

I sort of remember your concept outline of 5 or 6 years ago.

Are you considering building off of that?

Marc

I was thinking of starting a new wizardry or wizardry like game. I have a bit of time and am a programmer by trade. I want to make an online version that features the same movement style and features of Wizardry 7. CoDS is the game I have played the most, but I have played them ever since I was a kid.
I can create almost all the programming, but I was looking for things like the story line, if we should follow the wizardry line or break off to something else. I also am looking for a bunch of graphics artist to contribute artwork.
I can start with a basic framework with a few monsters and then move from there. Think of it as a graphical mud. You should be able to interact with many of the other players that may be living on the game as well. I also plan on letting those that reach certain achievements to be able to create more quests and achievements to make things infinitely expandable. I have the hosting space for it and I am excited to move things forward if I can get people to contribute. Spread the word to other forums that you think may like this as well. Best regards.

I am currently working on a project that will involve many of the things as yours: I am trying, trying being the key word, to make a game, and I am of course also inspired by my favorite game, Wiz 7. So far I have done a little work, a bit of story and some background information. The most important bit of info that I got from your post was the choice of engine. I had planned on RPG Maker, but I was not too happy with that choice. I am going to look into Irrlicht and see what I can find. I will be happy to get off of the RPGMaker wagon.

My idea was to make a hybrid fantasy / sf rpg loosely based on the far future of a family of naturalists, and follows the story of Erasmus D'harwen. I have some information up at www.mindexpansionproject.com. I would be happy for any type of input. And yes, the timeline is about right. I had planned on 3 years!

Follow Yodas advice. There is no try. Do or don't do.

I always get that quote wrong, but I feel my version is better:

There is no try, only do ... but "do" in my case seems to be more like procrastination, that actually doing.

I might have got it wrong myself, I think it is:

Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try. (Yoda)
