Ok I bought it anyway...
Generally I like the game atmosphere is very immersive and such but as always there are couple of problems there:
  1. One can save the game only in the predetermined locations called "havens".

  2. Story is quite linear in the begining at least. I did not get very far yet.

  3. One can not look at the sky and above in general. This seems very suppresing for me .

Generally I tend to find vampires a real pain in the neck. (Do I really need to ad a smile icon?) However, was thinking about giving some such game a try.

What, briefly, are they about...and do they contain any role-playing?

4. "Vampire: the Mascquerade new era in online gaming"
Actually, it all started with White Wolf (http://www.white-wolf.com/) company that produces pen & paper role playing games. They came up with idea of storytelling RPGs that basically based on game master = storyteller creating "fiction" like chronicle and conveying it to the players in form of narratives, flashbacks, description of settings, external events and by controlling NPCs.
They produced couple of games based on that idea such as Mage, Vampire and Werewolf... All this games including Vampire have immerse settings, well-developed universe and tested role playing system, which undergo couple of revisions.
Ok, then they hooked up with Nihilistic (http://www.nihilistic.com/) to produce computer variant of Vampire. That gave the birth to Vampire the Masquerade Redemption. Game contains single player part and multiplier part.
In the single player game you have everything you would have expected from CRPG: quests, NPCs, parties, statistics, experience, magic, items, monsters, dungeons and so on...
In the multi player game on the other hand in addition to all listed you get unique storytelling interface that allow to bring real pen and paper atmosphere into computer. Storyteller can create chronicles, distribute items, place and control NPCs and monsters, give narratives, affect PCs and so on.
Therefore, in the conclusion I can say that biggest potential innovation that this game can bring is the good online experience. However, in order to achieve this goal online community should be built and storytellers should be attracted into it. That is exactly what White Wolf is betting on.

Unfortunately I am not familiar with pen and paper rules so I can not comment on that but if you will list some things that you liked or did not like I can confirm their presence.
Generally, there are traits like strength, dexterity, stamina, manipulation, wits, intelligence, perception and some others. Then there is whole bunch of disciplines (something like magic). Plus health, blood pool ;), resistance against fire, different types of assault, frost...).
Combat is kind of like cross between real-time and phased. Right now you just control one person in party and basically command to cast spell or kill somebody then probabilities come to play to figure out if you actually succeeded and if so how much damage was inflicted. Other party members are controlled by party AI but you can still direct them and adjust AI settings. Then developers are going to release patch that will allow to pause game set commands for all party members and then unpause it kind of like in phase based system.

6. "Story: Vampire the Mascquerade Redemption"
Story goes something like that:
"God" cursed Cain for killing his brother, yeah these infamous brothers from bible, by forbidding him to feed on anything that grows out of earth. So Cain can only consume blood from him go 13 vampire clans that under disguise (the masquerade) live among people till our days. Moreover, some of them live very well managing to control fate of humanity in certain moments. Nevertheless, all these vampires plagued by internal turmoil and constantly fighting among each other.
Main character is the crusader from the 11 hundreds AD that eventually became vampire and is bound to live forever. His quest to bind vampires and find salvation for his own life unveils over centuries from medieval times till presence.
There is quite a bit of role-playing but at least in the beginning it is too linear hope it will change later in the game.

11. "RE: Vampire: the Mascquerade"
A friend gave me the game without comment. I now understand why.

After 3 hours play, I brought my character to the point of being 'converted' to a vampire. I took a break there. The next day I loaded up the game and by accident, hit New Game instead of Load Game. Not wishing to start over, I quit WITHOUT SAVING... or so I thought. Turns out, the New Game, all 13 seconds of it, had been written over my old game. I sent a nasty note to the V:TM folks asking for my game back or my money back. This was a week ago and no response so far.

Upshot. It's a very linear game without much lee way as to what YOU want to do. When you finally become a vampire, you find your powers aren't any better or more than when you were human. Most of the decisions are made for you by the game... a narrow path to follow.

Advice. Find a LARP (Live Action Roll PLaying) group in your area and join them. V:TM, in my opinion, is a waste of time, if not money.

I returned the game to my friend, without comment.

Chunks!

And almost as easy to open a Windoz box to C drive so you could Save Game until your hard drive got cramps. Definitely a thoughtless, rush-to-market-cash-in. Activision needs a 'sense of shame' patch.

With V:TM, I'm afraid the 'next time' will be a waste of time.

But I am SO stoked on W&W... looking forward to at least a Windoz Demo... can't abide DOS, don't have VESA... I am SO depressed and left out.
