"Eschalon"
Anybody here every play or try out Eschalon by Basilisk Games (
http://basiliskgames.com/book1.html )?

Despite it being a top-down view single character game it is turn-based and it has a pretty big world.

I'm just trying out the demo right now which you can get for Win, Mac, OR *nix.

So far not too bad..

I encourage all you old school rpg fans to give this game a try. I think it's really well done and for such a small studio/team they really put out a great game.

I've been pretty hooked on it for a while now...

Anyway go check it out!

Seems pretty well done from the demo, though pretty slow going at first and not much variety of monsters. Have you purchased the full version?

Wondering how "big" that is ...

I have purchased the full version and am almost done with my first game.

To give you an idea of how "big" the world is there are like 12 "areas" or large squares of maps plus a dozen or so "dungeons" some not very big and some as big as one large square. To give you another idea if you do all the side quests and explore everything it averages about 35 to 40 hours of gameplay.

Yeah need full version to get to Darkford..

Hope you are enjoying it - I know I did!

Now that I've finished the game once with a fighter (swords with some bow skill) going to try again with a different char type.

... but have yet to figure out how to use magick ... I assume I have to get a scroll and read it first, but don't have the Int attribute required ... argh ;-(

Theres two types of magic - divination which is based on your WIS and Elemental which is based on your INT.

So yeah find a scroll and right-click on it in your inventory to learn it then click the pentagram to set up quick casts. You need certain levels of int/wis + magic ability to learn certain spells and then there are requirements for the level you can cast the spell at.

I haven't played a magic user yet but from what I heard they are hard to start with but gets easier after you've gained a few levels.

Check out the forums - there is a ton of info there -just avoid the spoily posts if you don't want to be spoiled.

OK, knowing all that, I rolled up a decent majik user, and he is much more enjoyable to play than my ranger ever was. You get a spell right off (if you know where to look for it) and you can take out salamanders in one (level 3 cast) hit .... and unlike a ranger with arrows, who was missing half the time, and not doing damage 1/2 the time he hit ... magik hits every time, unless your target is too close adn interrupts your spell casting.

Thanks for the tips ...

I've found this game is similiar to Wizardry in that you can spend your first few hours of the game just rolling for good stats..
