"The culture of possibility"
I just read the long discourse on the topic of the nature of crpg's and fantasy/sci-fi books. It has occurred before this, to me, that the issue of generating new techiniques for environments of creation is cumbersome to contemplate (thus the lack of originallity and real creativity). For example, Tolkien is described essentially, as the creator of what is now called modern fantasy. The result of this has been decades of 'fantasy' publications in an amazing amount of genres. The blockage that I feel is in the path of creating a new genre besides those that are in current publication today (IE: religion, sci-fi, fantasy, which all go hand in hand as generally being non-fiction) is the lack of realization of possibility.

What I mean by this is that people are stuck attempting to form art, so to speak, from current genres. The most successful of all art forms are those that are not explored as of yet. A perfect example of this is Star Wars, which was the first of its kind. This movie ventured into a totally new way of looking at entertainment. Suddenly the entire movie industry saw the 'possibility' of a new guise for entertainment and terrible movies are subsequently produced; IE Universal Soldier 1 & 2.

This happens all the time in the computer gaming world. Some of the best recent examples of the status quo being trancended are: Wolfenstein/Doom which has now led to the run of the mill FPS's (Quake 3), Dune 2/Warcraft which has led to the stereotypical RTS (Command & Conquer), and Diablo, which started the huge wave of Online RPG's that we see nowadays.

So all in all, what am I trying to say.... I guess that I really don't have a point other than that instead of being limited by the genres you see around you, attempt to see what is not available, then go ahead and produce whatever it is that you think you've found. This deals directly in the realm of possibility and is a hard concept to grasp. Imagine the possibility of delving into the universe of possibilities that you don't even know, that you don't even know.

In the end, the status quo is never acceptable, the goal is ALWAYS just out of reach (sometimes it's a lot farther than just out of reach).

By the way, this is my inspiration to all of you who are thinking of making something artfull my suggestion is to make a computer game that deals with an entirely new genre, that way you will make money from it too and besides I really want a GOOD game to play in the near and distant future.
