"Foreign keyboard problem"
Hello. This great game hasn't released in my country, France, so I ordered the UK version and played it for a few months without encountering any problems.
But now I am in the Rapax Castle, in the way to become a Templar, and I must give his master's name to the guard in the balcony room. This name contains a " ' ".
UK and France haven't the same keybords : they almost contain the same signs, but not placed on the same keys. That's why, as an exemple, when playing Wizardry I type a "$", a "-" appears. Still no problem, when needed I try every key until the good sign appears...
But I can't obtain a " ' ", this simple " ' " that causes the guard to not recognize the name.
Have some of you encountered the same problem ?
Anyway, thank you for having read such a long (but thrilling and exciting) post.

As in Al-Adryian. Anyhow, this has worked in other cases, not sure if it will work with the foreign keyboard issue. You can get any keystrok via it's ascii code and the ALT key. Hold down ALT and type 065 on your numeric keypad and you get: A

066 is B, etc. Here are the codes to try:
- 039
' 045

Note: these codes don't work in applications, like Netscape, that have functions (like close the window without prompting ;-() mapped to ALT + 4

Note 2: Duh! It helps if you put NUM Locks on

You're right, it's a dash. I forgot, not having had the occasion to play for a week. But I can't manage to have any of ' or -, my exemple was invented.
For the note I : Looks like Wizardry doesn't know these codes.
For the note II : ...I didn't understand. What's a NUM lock? Maybe it's just because I don't know the English informatical terms.
By the way, thanks a lot for the quick answer. I often try to see if there are people I can help on this forum, but there is always somebody faster

5. "Keystrokes"
Note I: that may because Wizardry is trapping the ALT keypress

Note II: NUM locks is the key that makes the numeric keypad act like numbers, instead of arrow keys.

I'll double check this when I get home ...

6. "No good .. but ..."
Maybe type the text in another application, like NotePad, then cut and paste it into Wizardry ...

You mean, to copy the name here then to type ctrl + v when I must type the name? Nothing happens.

By the way, if it reveals to be too difficult, isn't it a way to program the files in order to have the same result as if I had given the name?

11. "Easiest solution"
May be to upload your saved game somewhere, have someone with a "working keyboard" give the answer, save and give you back the new saved game.

That would be great ! Do someone agree to do it?
By the way, I won't be able to post nor read new messages until next wednesday, because I won't have Internet, but I will contact whoever is willing to do it for me as soon as possible.

I realize I'm a little late, so this is just for future reference: would it not be possible to temporily set the keyboard layout of your operating system to English?

17. "Another easy way out"
You can modify NPC's script slightly and replace this annoying character with another simple symbol.
