1. "RE:Board Updates"
Here here mojo! I'll join you in this fight, too! Llevram, I hope the board names won't be simplified, like from Destination Dominus to Destination Wizardry 8 -- that just loses all the flavor of the board for me. Could you please give us detailed reasoning for every board change you implement... I mean, if it aint broke don't fix it, right.

There is a guy who knows a heck of a lot more about Perl/CGI programming than I do, called David Choi - he wrote this board system, so I trust his opinions regarding it. He seems to think it would be a good idea to implement the latest fixes and I agree. And as a software professional myself, I am not about to go to him the next time I do have a problem I want fixed and say, "why no, I didn't install the latest patches ... do I need to?"

You can go here and get a list of the impending doom (the version 1.1 update).

Seeing as how it's Mojo and Dr. Slop that are spoiling for the fight; I think we should give them the opportunity to evaluate and criticize each suggested change on the webpage in Rick's e-mail. The rest of us will treat them as many professors treat their students, ignoring them unless they come up with a good idea we can steal. (We working stiffs envy you students regarding the summer vacation.)

4. "Before we spin too far out of control"
There is a valid underlying point to DrSlops post - the VN board (which most of us here have all but abandoned) would regularly make changes - drastic changes - w/o any prior warning their customers (formerly us).

I say "customers" because it was our traffic (and click-throughs on ads) that was making them money.

This board is a bit different, in a couple aspects:
1. I'm not making any money on it - directly*
2. We seem to have lost the incessant whiners and spammers that frequented the VN boards
3. We have a *moderator*

Luckily, I have not had to do any real "moderating" or real work, or I probably would have shucked this whole thing and chalked it up to "good idea, bad judgement".

But, as I eluded to: I feel a certain amount of responsibility to notify everyone that there is a planned change. And I am always interested in hearing ideas on how to make the board better. I'm not interested in getting into any discussions of which changes make sense or not.

* "I'm not making any money on it - directly"
Means, yes, it is like free advertising to be able to include a link to my shareware site and maybe drive some Chips and Bits sales through my site, but we don't have banners ... yet.

I stated at the beginning that I may add banners to help defray the cost of running the board, if it became costly. As of yet (about 6 months have passed now), I still see no need, but things are changing. Since this board's inception, the traffic on my site has run at about 300MB per week. Lately it has jumped up to about 500MB per week. I am also coming to the end of my ISP and web hosting contracts and want to look for more cost effective alternatives - which yes, could mean maybe more changes.

Not sure if this came through or not, but I meant my earlier post in this thread as something of a joke -- a little poke at the way we've been dissecting every little move the W8 team makes. I don't actually expect a detailed explanation of every change -- I looked through the list of updates, and I don't even understand half of them. I do, however, appreciate the fact that you keep us up to date about changes on this board -- I think what finally drove us off of the VN was when they kept changing the board without any warning.

If banners would help you defray the cost of keeping this place open for us, I don't have any problem with it... a little more annoying due to increased loading times, but certainly understandable... we appreciate the effort/cost that you put into this in the first place.

Right, Doc. My original post was meant to poke fun at all of us--fretting over whether we could spend long hours rolling characters in Wiz 8. (Tho if Doc and me want to--and we do--who will it hurt as long as you don't have to if you don't want to?)

Whatever changes you make, Rick, I'm sure will only make this board even better.

You de man.

8. "RE: Banners (bruce? david?)"
(Complete aside: aren't we proud of an america where Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk, got his name changed to David for TV because Bruce sounded too wimpy... not that there's anything wrong with that)

Harrumph... Rick, if putting banners on this board will make it easier for you to keep doing what you're doing, please go ahead. We all know you will be considerate and appropriate in your placement.

More complete asides: Actually Stan Lee made the first name mistake/change between issues 1 & 2 of the original six issue run of The Incredible Hulk. So, in typical Marvel fashion he "explained" that Banner's full name is Robert Bruce Banner.

And sent someone a fabulous "No-Prize". Which was an empty Marvel stationery envelope. Believe me, those were the days...

10. "Ah, the 'no' prize"
I remember reading about it many times, though until now I never knew what it actually was ... did you get one?

And for my own sidenote, glad you stepped in, I was going to say his full name was "David Bruce Banner". Guess I need to brush up on my Hulk (Thor, Captain America, SpiderMan, Daredevil, ... marvel superhero) trivia.

Hey, wait a minute, you said something before about Daredevil ... you wrote it? Care to elaborate?

11. "The banner, complex (said the Hulk)"
"Banner too complex ... don't want!"

Actually, right now it would just add complexity and make it harder on me. It's only when I run out of bandwidth (we started out running at about 1/4 of my allotment, we're now up to about 1/3), or more likely storage space (when I last checked, I was at just below 50% in use) that I will have to revisit the banners issue.

Or, hey, here's an idea (stolen from O.J.) - I could make it pay-per-view

Hey...if the glove fits...

Re: Marvel, etal--yeah. I "broke-in" with Warren when they did Creepy/Eerie/Vampirella mags. Went to DC/Marvel/Western/Pacific/Comico/Eclipse/others over the next decade or so. Health (diabetes related) pretty much forced me into a somewhat early retirement. Six eye surgeries later I'm seriously considering testing the waters again-- and mebbe writing an rpg, too--although I really haven't kept up with comics in quite a while. I wrote DD/Capt. America/Ghost Rider/Battlestar Galactica/Tomb of Dracula/many others. Rampagin' Rog--
