"I've never noticed this before"
I started a no-magic party last night. Actually it is low magic, one priest with "light" and level 1 heal converted to a fighter. I named the priest Maceman to remind me to have him use a mace. I named a fighter Axeman to remind me that he is supposed to use an axe.

Maceman came equipped with a mace!! Priests are supposed to get a quarterstaff. Axeman came equipped with a Battle Axe!! My third fighter came armed with a longsword, which I expected.

Am I hallucinating? I will try some more weapon-named characters tonight and see if I can reproduce this.

1. "Choose Your Weapon"
It depends upon your starting skill in the respective weapons: Priest defaults to Mace unless you create them with more Wand and Staff Skill; Fighters get Longsword unless Axe Skill is higher on creating. (this is true of only those two.)
The machine does not care what you name them.
