mojo (310 posts) May-29-00, 05:42 PM (Pacific) "Comparisons" I've played several rpg's and most aren't that good. Ultima Underworld was good. Arena and Daggerfall had their moments. But they were too easy once you learned your way around. Esp. Daggerfall. Become a werewold, get the hircene ring. Become a mage, rise a few levels, make a powerful regeneration spell and nothing--not even a deadra lord can take you out. I was wondering, are there any games that compare favorably, overall, with Wizardry--esp. CoDS/Gold? Maybe some not so famous ones I haven't seen, being new to the net and great sites like this one. I like to create my own characters and don't like labor-intensive games like Betrayal in Antara where you get interrupted every few seconds telling you that your party is "getting fatigued". Just gimme a horse, already, and lemme get on with the game, already! I remember enjoying games like Pool of Radiance a long time ago... There's just something about staying up all night trying to get that fairy ninja honestly, ya'know? And it's good to know that there are others who like the game and are very knowledgeable about how it's played/tips/tricks/etc. I guess what I'm wondering is what do you play when you aren't playing Wiz...and why...   Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I have an old game called Perfect General (the original, not the sequel that sucked) that I dust off every once in a while. I've been playing Wiz 7 off and on, but now that summer is here (and school is OVER), I have to decide if I am going to buy a couple new games (Thief II and Drakan) or get to work on restoring my Firebird ('68 convertible). I know which one is cheaper , but I doubt I'll have the same answer for which is more fun. But who says you have to play RPGs? "RE: Nothing compares 2 u :)" If you have the archives, I really can't recommend enough that you play W6... although I enjoy w7 more because of the deeper NPC interaction, in some ways Bane is a much more elegant and tense game. The lack of an automap may be the only serious drawback, but then I'm sure you can find maps on the web (or I can scan mine in for you). W5 also had its great moments. As far as other games, I've really never enjoyed any nearly as much as I continue to enjoy Wizardry, but I also thought the gold box games were a lot of fun, and still playable. I now play MM2 - IT IS RUNNING ON MY PIII, just as all Bard's Tale parts - couldn't imagine that it would work but it does . I will play MM2-MM5 and all the Forgotten Realms stuff 'cause I haven't found a new(er) crpg that satisfies me. Despite of the correct AD&D rules Baldurs Gate sucks - and so do most of the other newbies. Where do you find really hard fights with a lot of attempts, cursing and howling - only in W, (the early)M&M and a few of the *ancestors*. Beside that I love Heroes of Might and Magic and Civilisation (for sure and ever one of the best games ever made). Once or twice a year I play (round based) strategic games. And I must admit - (*ducking*)I really enjoy playing Diablo though definitely only with my best friend in the battlenet - he lives far away, so it's fun to *meet* him. Jörg PS. Draken...because I like the dragon and like strong women who fight, and the puzzles you have to solve. Most CRPG's catch my interest, but once I start playing them, I hate them. That was a quick .gif too, only because I am not deft enough to make the complicated ones yet...but give me time. Which version of Paint Shop Pro do you have? If you have PSP 5, then I believe Animation Shop 1 should have come with it. My guess is that you have PSP 4. I think that you can buy Animation Shop by itself, but don't quote me on that. I was afraid to make a more complicated one, because they take up so much space on webpages. The one that I was going to upload yesterday, was 956k and took 10 minutes to upload. I figured you would have killed me, so I made a much smaller one. I didn't want to eat your bandwidth, so I try to keep my jpgs under 60k and my gifs under 250k. I notice at Delphi, most people tend to get p***y if they have to wait for large graphics to open, me included. PSP 2.1...wow...a classic. Well, look around for PSP 5 on Ebay, or if you have the funds PSP 6.02. I downloaded the trial version of PSP before I bought my copy. He taught me the beginnings of HTML and showed me where to go to find more commands. LOL I have only been doing the graphics for about six months and the HTML for seven months or so. It isn't hard, and alot of programs are out there. I was computer dumb until we got the computer a year ago today, in fact I had to wipe the drive on the third day, because I messed up the windows .ini file. Paint Shop Pro is the way to start. Very easy program...still learning myself. I have only had my copy for three weeks or so. There are many books and webrings out there with graphic knowledge. I think I remember, vaguely, the threads when you started. I'll have to go back and look for them. And I'll check out Paint Shop Pro. I'll probably wait to start looking into all of it until I upgrade my computer (hoping to get all the parts I need at Christmas), I really need a larger HD or just a 2nd one to have enough space to add anything new. jersey BTW, I like that jpg you have with the woman and the web (like one of the fates). (eh, ya young whipper-snappers, I rememeber back in my day, we didn't even have HTML ... ) Yes, that pic brought back memories for me, the whole Piers Anthony Incarnations of Immortality series, that I just loved (and read many a time). This pic is the cover of the third book (of 5, later expanded to 7). This series was some of his "deeper" work, not the tongue-in-cheek Xanth stuff, which was OK. Book 2 of this series, Bearing an Hourglass, was really hard to follow at times (play on words there, it was about Time). I had to reread many parts (sometimes more than once). Damn, I knew it looked familiar. *Melissa hits self in head* I have read alot of Piers' books including that series. Loved it. I think I need to read them again, it has obviously been awhile. (Have been rereading Jose Philip Farmer's Riverworld series recently) I enjoy the Xanth series. Light, fast reading. But, the earlier books were best. jersey I wonder if someone could make a *duh* emotion icon? The Xanth series was pretty good up to a point, but then it went rapidly downhill, to the point where i probably wouldn't be able to take it if I picked one up today. The Incarnations of Immortality was also an interesting series, since it was kinda like the same thing from many different perspectives, although in a way it kinda seemed like the lazy way out, since it meant Piers Anthony didn't have to come up with a new story each time. My favorite book of the series would have to definitely be the 6th book, For Love of Evil. Gives a real interesting perspective of Satan, especially after reading the first 5. Haven't had much time to improve on my very rudimentary web site of late but I found the experience exciting none the less. If I am at all qualified to give any pointers, I would say to build your first pages by hand to learn HTML concepts and then switch to an editor. I found this helpful when I started using MS to edit my pages and it turned my one small paragraph of HTML into two pages of gibberish. I used This Site to learn the basics and I would recommend it to anyone just starting. I would like to try my hand at one of those animated .gif's as well. Pretty neat stuff M' Lady. I started Wiz with CoDS (I still think of fish when I see that....) in 9th grade, which was in *counts on fingers* 1994. Jeez, maybe I should go join the rest of my peers and play Baulders Gate or some FPS? HECK NO! I play AD&D 2nd and I think BG is messed up bad. I have WS FTP LE which I think can be found in quite a few places including Here. I down loaded an evaluation version of Animation Shop 2 from Jasc Software to make the animated .gif below.
