"I'm trying something new (well, for me...)"
I'm trying a non-magical magic party.

Whenever I take a strict magic user he ends up being the only one that I need for magic and my other people tend to fall behind in magic spells.

This time I'm trying something new.

Fighter - A bit of brawn without a lot of brain.
Samurai - With the mage spells
Ranger - For the alchemy spells
Valkyrie - A bit of Priestly help
Monk - Psionics are us
Bard - Just to round out the party a bit.

How does this party sound?

Sounds balanced. Would have gone with a Gadgeteer instead of Bard (more 7th level gadgets than bard insturments) but thats my opinion. 6 decent short range fighters, 4 healers (dulcimer of mending), 5 good long range killers (monk sling or throwing not as effective damage wise as bow), and 5 "magic" users.

except they start out at level 5 with a few heal spells and decent weapons. Injuries in the Monastery may be a problem. I might flip the Valkyrie to priest until Ranger and Monk get healing spells, then back to valkyrie.

I agree. Start the Valkyrie out as a priest until you get cure disease. The pestilent rats in the Upper Monastary are not so bad then.

Well, this isn't working out at all like I'd hoped.

My magic using members don't get enough use of the magic to bother with. The monsters are generally on them before they have a chance to cast a spell.

I haven't given my Samurai any throwing/slinging or distance weapons (someone once told me that a true Samurai would never use them because it would be dishonorable to not fight face to face against your enemy) and, instead, opted for magic.

Of course they're still only level 9 so I guess I shouldn't expect TOO much right away.

I have had similar experiences with the hybrids. You'll have to either practice(train) or force yourself to use magic even at melee range. What I started to do was to use Guardian Angel, Superman, Bless and the disabling spells like Freeze Flesh, Sleep, Web, Insanity in the first round. Then single target spells the following rounds. Still, it was too tempting to just get the fights over with usin melee after 4 or 5 rounds.

Not true, the history of the Samurai show them to be expert bowmen while riding on horseback. In their later years, they were not above using single-shot musket type rifles either. For face-to-face they would obviously prefer the sword though.

I was in the first Retro Dungeon (inside the graveyard). I saved just before I was attacked by some centipedes. I killed off the last one and suddenly I was dropping through the floor and 'your party was crushed'.

I reloaded several times and couldn't get away from the centipedes and after every battle got the same message.

Did you try running forward into them (every turn) to get to a different place? Leave one alive and just walk away until you get somewhere safe? When you fell through the floor, did you pass through the OTHER retro dungeons?

I got stuck in the Northern Wilderness dungeon once. I teleported into a room with an 8 pin lock with no knock-knock and the ninja's lockpicking didn't go up after a half-hour of clicking.

Its too bad you can't chop down the door with an axe or shoot the lock with a musket.

Yeah, I moved away from them down the hall but when the battle was over I still fell through the floor. I could see either A) Another dungeon or B) the same dungeon but couldn't be sure. It was kind of neat, though. Went out not with a bang but with a squip.
