"prefer spellcasters?"
Hi - I have long been given the understanding by more "conservative" players to avoid spellcasters, mages in particular. However, when I broke down and created a mage (in Wiz 6) I *loved* it. Even the manuals recommend protective rather than assault spells. However, too, I find that in the early stages of the game, against strong monsters, there isn't time to throw protective spells - it's the fastest fireball I can throw, and lots of heal. In spite of the lack of armor and so few really good weapons, I love having a mage - my current one is a blond female elf with a very nice disposition(the first time I heard her say "dammit" I almost fell off my chair! LOL!)
So - who else out there likes spellcasters? Which are your favorites? What are your favorite spells? H

well i like all the spellcasters,(i have 5 in my party) but my favorite spell is Death Wish. Vi does it after lots and lots of game play. (basically an instant death spell cast at all enemies). and i love it, it has gotten me out of many hairy battles. especially in rapax rift/castle. my other fav is Banish, wonderful for martens bluff.

There is so much to do and combinations to explore in the game, I couldn't imagine playing a magic only party .... that and sometimes it seems brute force is required.

As for favorites, the psionic spells visual effects have always been my favorite (Ego Whip, escpecially) ... and their incapacitating effects early on for me are "must haves". Later in the game, my Psionics always seem to become less useful, as other's high end spells seem more effective.

Alchemists are nice, and can't be silenced. Also they can wear better armor than the other spell casters. I only recently tried using pure spell casters based on Llevram's story about what fun he had using them. It was delightful, but you wouldn't want to overdo. A few good bashers are key in many battles at A.P.

I have had some unusually good results with lobbed fireballs/iceballs that I couldn't do any other way. Like, sneaking up on a group of fairies (see them on the radar), lob fireballs and begin protective spells (soul shield, bless) before they can nail me. Or good ole psionic blast - you can see only one of a large group, some can run away blind and you can still hit them (if you have a lock on one of them). H
