"What level should I be before leaving the Monastery?"
I've decided to try a 2 player game and was wondering what would be a good level to leave the monastery?

I'm running a Fairy Ninja and an Elven Bishop (so I get all the spells).

Problem is that I'm getting my butt kicked 3 ways to Sunday.

On a solo or minumum (< 6) team approach I have found it advisable to add +1 level for every -1 member therefore minimum survival level for Arnika Rd is 4-5 minimum for you woild be 7-9 dependong on what spells your Bishop learns. BTW have him concentrate on his Divinity and Wizardry spellbooks since 5 of the 8 long term protection and enhancement spells are 1st to 3rd level Priest or Mage spells. ( Missle Shield is one of your best protections in the monastery and Arnika Rd. )

I wouldn't level much before leaving monastery, rather stop at lvl 4, leave monastery, and take the levels on the road. If you don't hang around too long on the road, you'll get low-level spawns there, so you shouldn't get impossible fights.
Otherwise you could just do some running. No need to kill everything you run into.

Aha, interesting topic, for my martial arts team (two monks + ninja) is stuck inside the monastery and there's no way out, for the monsters get too tough for them. Perhaps I restart that game and stop levelling at lvl 4 (why not at 5, so that they all at least have the "heal wounds" spell?).

The problem with running is that there is at least one group of monsters waiting for me in the canyon, and there's no way of sneaking past them.

btw, do you think that it's possible for a low level team to reach RFS-81 (who is the only RPC that I intend to pick up with this team)?

Bye

You can run away from the bandits in the canyon fairly easily (get close, initiate combat, start running right through them, they won't follow you far). The two wasps are more difficult to run away from, but if you're lucky you won't meet them.
Concerning level 4, it's a tip i've heard but not taken myself (My solo went at lvl 5). some ppl say at 4 it's considerably easier, i haven't tried to check the differences. Something I heard more than once though is that it's bad to enter arnika below level 5, since some wraparound bug is supposed to spawn high level androids then. Generally i'd say it's a good idea to keep permanent saves just before entering a new area (just in case).

(edit: I picked RFS-81 at lvl 7-8 once, but you need to watch your radar closely, and run _a lot_.)

Alright Ferro, the newly created Martial Arts Team is out of the monastery at lvl. 4 and it's true: The game is much easier if you stop levelling at that lvl and there aren't any thieves in the canyon.

So far there were no deaths at all! Okay, one, when I triggered a trap twice while disarming and I was too lazy to reload after the first failure to disarm, but that doesn't count...

Let's see what happens in Arnika and whether I'm able to reach RFS-81 at "monster central" or not.

Maybe I'll restart my Solo Faerie Ninja as well, then choosing a female Faerie who can wear the necklace of endurance.

Just as a warning (although it is probably too late), female Faeries cannot wear the necklace of endurance. If you were lucky enought to get the locket(?) in the monastery, which also regenerates stamina, then that can be worn by a female Faerie.

Thanks for the info, DHolzer.

If that's the case then I stick to the Ninja that I already have. I think I start pumping points into strength at the coming level-ups, so that he gets at least some more stamina-points.

btw: I have never ever found locket in the moanstery. Does anyone have some info about it?

8. "Monastery Assistant Chest"
LAST EDITED ON Jan-21-04 AT 02:11 AM (Pacific)

It's located in the chest in upper monastery, the one where the lightning rod is. If you're desperate, you can try to run for it (3 set fights), but be prepared for a couple of reloads (~15).

(edit: the locket of reflection that is, grants stamina+1 for all females)

Is it a random item? I've never gotten it in the games that I've played (at least not that I remember).

I'm finding out just how frustrating it is to be level 4 and trying to fight Gregor (the Cockroach King). I played for like 40 minutes last night and died a jillion times.

Yup, it's random (~7% chance). My solo Lord preferred to run away from Gregor. You don't need to kill everyone on Dominus after all. And if you're returning for the demon weapons you can still show him how to fight

I haven't found the locket either. And I don't think that I want to fight my way to the chest ~15 times just to get the locket. The stamina-spell and the potions work quite well. Later in the game I hope that the fights will be short and sweet (CoC + criticals).

My solo - ninja was lucky enough to KO Gregor (Faerie stick!), but it took me quite a few reloads as well.

I FINALLY beat Gregor.

Although you don't have to kill everything on Dominus I really LIKE to kill Gregor! I just have this thing about cockroaches. <grin>

Update:

I managed to get to RFS-81 and recruit him (at lvl 8), although it was a long run back to the swamp, fleeing from nine millipedes and a couple of blinding wasps.

Unfortunately, I hadn't had the NAS-Potion with me to repair him, so he wasn't as useful as he is when he's functioning at peak (attack-rate halfed & he sometimes attacks random targets, including party members and himself). But it was funny, he has some interesting comments to make: "RFS-81, combat fzt" and the like. My favourite, after a victorious battle: "Incimmerate bodyshells"...

Actually next to RFS-81 (slightly up the hill) is a hidden potion of NAS. So if you had time to search....

Yes, I've read about that, too. But I just had no time to go searching for that potion, because the mentioned millipedes were already wating in front of the hut! I was just happy to get out there alive (and kickin'... )!

btw: If RFS-81 is repaired while he is in the party, there's no exp-bonus. If he is repaired before he's recruited (or after a dismissal), each party-member gains 25.000 exp.

16. "Leaving the monastery - Level 2 solo character"
I thought I'd add my bit here, having just gotten to Arnika with my first attempt at a solo character. I took the advice above that it may better to save level ups until you get to Arnika, as it will minimise the level of opponents you meet. In summary:

- I imported a fairie bishop (my ultimate aim is to go solo bishop until I get all the key spells, probably level 20-22 at a guess if I forego a couple of L6 or L7 spells), then switch to a faerie ninja. This should lead to a super FN with all spells avaiable. Note thay the imported character had 2 faerie sticks to start off with
- I immediately levelled up one level only, to a level 2 monk. This gave me access to stealth, dual weapons and critical kill. By starting as a bishop and immediately switching, I accessed the above skills, plus access to a couple of spells (incl. heal wounds and sleep) + some damage resistance. Starting as a pure monk would have meant that the above spells would not have been available until higher levels
- this character is obviously quite weak to start (only 13 HP, and only fairie sticks (1-4 damage) as weapons. However, after killing two of the three crabs at the start, I defended and dodged against the third one to increase stealth. In no time at all, my stealth was up to 60 (+ 6 in AC). Now I was ready for some action inside the monastery
- slimes, bats and other nasties were easy at this stage. Very quickly built up close combat, dual weapons, critical kill and staff and wand skills to 20-30 levels, by which stage stealth was 70+ (overall AC 10)
- King crab was easy - killed him first go, although I lost my first two fights with Gregor. Increase the above skills to 40+, and then killed Gregor by running away and returning to the battle twice. (With the above skills, even though the faerie wands are quite wimpy they do have 50% sleep attribute, my faerie monk puts the monster(s) to sleep about every second round. They then do some real damage)
- after that lower monastery was easy, and upper monastery pretty simple except for the pestilent rats which I had to draw out in small groups
- getting to Arnika was simple, as I encountered some wasps and redweeds only, which were easy to defeat. Skills now: stealth 91, and all the other above skills 60+
- I'll now change to bishop, but retain stealth, dual wepaons and critical kill (which is already very useful), which means my bishop will have a good chance of survival whilst improving her magical skills
- next stop (if possible) is Mountain Wilderness for the Staff of Doom (should be possible with high stealth, some tincture of shadows and fast running shoes)
- more as it develops
