"My fighter can't even hit the broad side of a barn"
I decided to start Wizardry 6 from the beginning with a new party. The thing is, though, is that my fighter is shockingly ineffective. It's so bad that I have to make my party run away from rats on the first floor of the castle not because the rats can kill my party but because my Party. Can. Never. Hit. Them.

The only people in my entire party who can hit anything at all are my spell casters, but only as long as they have enough mana.

Am I really expected to rely entirely on my spell casters until my fighter makes his first level?

Maybe try rerolling your fighter(s) and put extra points into Dexterity and Speed?

I believe those affect to-hit more then any other attribute.

From my personal experience I would say that's quite normal
(just to be sure: you equiped the weapons that you start the game with?)

Playing W6 I usually spend the first days on just walking the first floor seeking for fights with these mutant plants to gain some xp points. and to reach level 3 at least.
At that point the party should slowly start to become reliable in fights.

Yes, I equipped my weapons. Please don't tell me I have to re-roll my fighter; I already spent the better part of an hour trying to get 18 stat points so that he can have the stats he needs for when he switches over to Ninja.

It's not leveling up or the fights themselves I'm worried about. Just the fact that I have to rely on my spellcasters to do any damage because my fighter is so ineffectual.

Since you mentioned the plants on the first floor, would they be easier than the rats on the ground floor?

I don't know exactly if the plants are easier, but I prefered them in the very beginning state. Of course the xp you get are merely poor, you'll need several fights to gain the next level.

With "first floor" I meant the floor you start the game on, not the next floor in the castle. The rat-fights there will scare your party away in the first time
So my advice would be just to walk around the rooms and corridors in the ground level seeking for encounters, even if it takes hours. Just run..., sometimes even hitting the walls will produce a fight. When leveling your characters up be sure to raise the sword skill.
I remember all my W6-games very nerve-eating in the beginning, so I had a dragon in my party to have the acid breath.

Tell me about it. I think I've found even closing the menu produces a fight.

Don't know if there's a secret behind it.
I remember having read about the rules when such a random fight occurs, maybe it was a thread in this forum, but also could have been a topic for W7...

What comes to my mind: do you play W6 "hard"? If so, maybe switch to "easy" in the beginning, changing it in the later game if you feel strong enough.

I've discovered what was wrong with my fighter, and the cause is a bit more mundane than what I had thought.

It turns out melee attacks don't work when I skip entering the magic word code at the start of the game. Skipping the code has also been causing me to meet nothing but rats).

The copy protection system of this game is a bit too subtle.

Finding easy fights in the beginning by just wandering around was difficult. I used to go to the belltower, switch to easy and jump the well there until my party was at level 3...

Actually I found the flying bats more difficult to hit and I didn't enter the bell-tower before my folks gained level 3.
But then stayed there till they were in level 5...

I'm wondering how it comes that you could enter the game at all.
My version directly sends me to dos prompt if I try to skip...
