"Sounds"
Hi all. I am playing Bane from the Ultimate Wizardry Archives, however, I cannot get any sounds from the game through my XP machines. Does anyone know how to set up to get the sounds to work? Thanks!

There isn't any useful sound in Bane, at least as far as i can remember from my original disks. Few *.voc-files are included in the software, but apart from the main screen sound i never had (and used) audio at all.

I took the chance to listen to a good atmospherical CD while playing Bane

It's been a long time since I've had an old Apple to play my original disks on, and you're right. I seem to remember the dungeon background noises to be pretty annoying, actually. lol Still, I miss the monster sounds as I battle them; the ghostly moans of the spirits I "liberated" from their existence and the soothing melody of the Horn of Souls.

I am still hoping someone knows the trick to setting up the sounds. It seems if I choose something other than "OFF/OFF" in the Game Configuration screen, any occurrence that would have a sound takes about 30 seconds to actually moved ahead from. (Battles get quite tedious this way!) Since the sound files do seem to be included, I was hoping there is a way to get them to work.

Thanks anyway Dandiphoot. I did like your suggestion

When using DosBox, you can get the sounds to play. Try that out. Make sure to press Enter, then go into Disk then your Configuration settings and turn sound on to FULL/FULL or FULL/?.

Do a search in google for dosbox to find it. Dosbox is a DOS emulator for windows.

Of course, I'm playing the bane game that came with The Ultimate Wizardry Archives, which I own. That disk is hard to find and when you do find it, it's not cheap! If anyone here needs a copy of any of the games off that disk, let me know.

I've been playing Bane off and on today at work and have had a great time with no problems (using dosbox as the emulator).

Perhaps using a different version of the game would help. My W7 just didn't start under DosBox. Then I downloaded a game and I haven't had any trouble after that. Bane downloaded from the same site works fine, too. (Just took one party for a shopping visit to the Dwarven Blacksmith and then onwards to Guardia).
Here's the site:

Computers can be strange, too. The MTG PC-game from 1997 works in my older XP machine (from 2001) but not in the one year old PC.

Thank you. I am running UWA and booted Bane up through DOSBox. You are right, the sounds come through fine that way. I also opened CoDS (not the updated WizGold) through DOSBox, and heard that music for the first time, too. It's been nice to get the complete package to play.

Well, what to say...because of THIS topic (and browsing the Wizardry-folders) I fell back in love again and I just started a new Bane-game...

Surprisingly, my DosBox is playing the sounds in an almost "orchestral quality" that I never had when playing the game with my old PC machines over the years.

One thing (and this is even more annoying in Crusaders played with DosBox): every hearable sound ends with a "crack"-noise (which obviously is a problem caused by the way data is stored in voc-files). It isn't a serious problem, but it reaches an annoying level in fights.

Does anybody have solutions for that ???
(in case that anybody else is suffering from such minor troubles)

If not, I would keep it for Bane like I did before: switch it off to listen to a CD while playing, for Crusaders I would appreciate any suggestions as I plan to import my party to finally run the whole scenario for the first time (and i loved the sounds that the monsters produce! personally I won't switch to WizGold for better sounds but narrators, I prefer the original W7).

I feel the same way you do about the noises. I love hearing the monsters, but it does sound like the 4th of July in DC the entire time I'm playing.

I never really played the true W7. It was very temperamental on my computer before I downloaded DosBox. What really keeps me going back to WizGold, however, is the mapping feature.

Advice has been given in other places about porting characters over from W6 to W7, but here is mine: You can only have one really great item per character come over. You are always best off (in my opinion) to make that item a weapon - assuming that character has a tremendous weapon. Any piece of armor only covers one part of the character's body, so a weapon is much better. Others might know exactly what is allowed and how it works, but generally, I'd say get rid of any armor with a "plus " to it. For example, Plate Mail is allowed for your fighters, but anything better than basic plate mail will mean you risk not being able to take their best weapon. Don't just pull all your great armor off though, or the character will come over to W7 with no armor. So have some basic (no pluses) armor for each of your characters and the best weapon they can use.

I'm trying the same thing you are taking my characters through 6-7-8, so I wish you luck!
