"Be it known..."
...that Lord Trebor promotes Rekis, Lakolor, Malob, Heskal, Nodar and Barvom to members of his elite guard for slaying the evil wizard and obtaining the Amulet of Werdna. The aforementionend heroes are granted heaps of gold and two weeks of joy and luxury in the Royal Suites by the generous and thankful Trebor, who now claims the Amulet his property again.
Hail the brave warriors!

After two weeks of mostly uninterrupted playing (duties? what duties? I have finished the Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord and am still overwhelmed by gameplay and atmosphere.
I started my adventures with a Dwarven Fighter, an Elven Samurai, a Hobbit Thief, a Gnome Priest, an Elven Bishop and a Human Mage.
I changed class only once with the Dagger of Thieves and reached the Levels 10 and 11 before the end. Turning my Thief into a Ninja made it much more difficult to identify the traps on treasure chests, though. Being a Ninja he missed the right one about half the time, glad I had enough points for Calfo by then. My Priest and Mage only gained Level 6 spells (no Tiltowait!), my Bishop reached Level 3 in both categories. My Samurai learned at least a Mahalito, but I used his spellpower only for Dumapic. From the Mage spells I used Halito and Dumapic in the first spell level, none of the second, Mahalito of the third, Dalto and Lahalito of the fourth and Madalto and Makanito of the fifth level. At Level 11 I couldn't try the Haman spell, but Zilwan worked great on the Vampire Lord. My Priest only used Dios and Milwa (when the points of Lomilwa were spent), Calfo and Montino, Lomilwa and Dialko, Dial and Latumofis, Maporfic and Dialma and Madi. The length of expeditions was limited through Lomilwa (Milwa), Dialko and Latumofis, so I never tried an offensive spell with my Priest. The limit of the Mage spell book was Dumapic, but I hardly ever ran out of them.
The manual of the UWA has "forgotten" to finish the description of the Priest spells, I'll have to look in the Internet what spells I have missed with my Level 11 Priest.

I was surprised to find just a few (minor) riddles in the game, but mapping and battling was exciting enough. Most annoying were the Levelups, in more than half the cases only 1 HP was granted and about the amount of attributes lost was gained, if at all. I'd like to play the original Apple version, but I don't know where to get it.

The best weapons I've found are the Blade Cusinart', Long Sword+2, Mage Basher, Short Sword+2, Mace+2, Staff of Montino and Staff of Mogref. I haven't been so lucky with armor, Plate Mail+1 and Chain Mail+2, Helm+1 were the best I could get, the Garb of Lords was lost due to an accident with a Hatumoto. I found some Amulet of Jewels, too, but I don't know what they do. I'll have to get an item list some day. Among the best (most expensive) things I found was the Ring of Healing, the Ring of Porfic probably just casts the spell.
Although my Priest had a lower AC and higher hit points, I put the Thief in the front row, he gets better weapons and is kind of useless during the battle in the back line.

Alas, this was my little account for Wiz1, I'm off for fan stuff and new adventures...

LAST EDITED ON Sep-02-00 AT 07:42 AM (Pacific)

you may sit down again

Preparing my party for the time warp, I noticed a strange thing: Long Sword+2 is cheaper than Long Sword+1, and the same with Short Sword+2/+1. Any ideas?

I still haven't found out what the Gold Key or the Statue of Frog do. The Bronze and the Silver Key opened doors in the second Level, the Statue of Bear opened the one I wasn't strong enough before, I think - or was it the Sliding Bear Door? The game doesn't tell you where the keys were successfully used, I just wonder...

The bronze key opens the area which lets you get the statue of the frog. The silver key opens the area which lets you get the statue of the bear. You need both statues to pass two consecutive doors which lead to the area with the gold key.

After extensive experimentation, I haven't been able to figure out what the gold key is for. Has anyone tried entering Werdna's lair without it? That's the only thing I can think of which I haven't tried.

4. "Mysterious Gold Key"
Luckily I had a savegame left directly in front of Werdna's Lair, so I dropped the Gold Key to see what happens - I could enter the room without any problems. So maybe the Gold Key is really just an "Useless Item", as many sites point out - but they also say the other keys and the statues are useless.
Do you know what the Sliding Door with the Bear is good for? You can get on both sides separately.

As for my Sword+2 questions, I saw they were posed and answered before... well, well, the first signs of age *groan*

I hope this topic is still alive. The gold key allows you to go through the "Out of Bounds" area one level one to get to the elevator. It makes it that much quicker.

In my experience, my characters always had free access to the out-of-bounds area and the elevator for levels 1-5 (although the blue ribbon is required to use the elevator to the lower levels).

In my version of the game (UWA) I could step in the "Area out of Bounds" before I even knew there were keys in Wiz 1. Perhaps the Gold Key had some function in the apple version, but it was "Lost in Transfer"

18. "gold key and murphy's ghost"
I just played this awhile ago and I believe that the key is required to get to where Murphy's Ghost is. If not there, then I will have to do some explorations.

As for the Apple versions...boy I haven't played them in years...currently my party is in the world of Bard's Tale...having cremated Werdna 10 times a piece and trying to finish Wiz 2.

This is your Lucky Day!

Sorta.

In my basement, I have an original, signed, "Wozniak", AppleIIgs with 1.3 MEGABYTES of RAM!!! and an external 20 MEGABYTE Hard Drive! Because I hated all the disc swapping necessary in the Wiz 1-5 series, I got 2 (count em) 2, 5 1/4" floppy drives and 2 (count em again) 2, 3 1/2" floppy drives. Sorry, the state-of-the-art 900K modem is mostly fried.

AND....

I have all FIVE original Apple formatted Wizardry games, original hand-drawn maps, and character print-outs (at each level from 1 through ?) of all 20 (count em) 20, characters played through the games. These print-out sheets courtesey of the "Wizardry Master" software, much like Rick's Wiz Edit software but just not as neat. Also have a collection of "small humanoid flees" gathered in a Circus format. I wrote Sir Tech several times about the misspelling but got no response. Guess the Typo Gnomes were on a coffee break.

You can have the whole package for the mere price of the original AppleIIgs, disk drives, and hard drive... $6,000.00. (I rounded down.)

Or I can scan the Spell List you want and send it to you, whichever.

But heads up on the software... it's written in PASCAL and as far as I know, cannot be imported to PC-type machines. Several hundred misspent dollars taught me that lesson.

Brief Rant.

Apple has orphaned every system they ever put out; Apple, AppleII, AppleIIe, Apple C, Lisa, Apple III, Apple IIgs (first 16 bit processor), and mark my words, the latest Cube (which makes me wanna make toast everytime I look at it).

Having 'adopted' several of these orpahans (AppleII, AppleIIe, AppleIIgs), I have sworn a blood oath never to buy another computer featuring half-eaten fruit as its logo.

Rant ended.

>Alas, this was my little account
>for Wiz1, I'm off for
>fan stuff and new adventures...
>

And a brilliant, thrilling account it was, too. All those ancient spell words brought back such found memories... I even wrote a song called, "Malikto Kadorto". Lottsa weighty minor chords and threatening 7th's. I shall not inflict you with a recitation. Besides, it's down in my infamous basement... which brings me back to the fold of the topic at hand... a complete list of P Spells for you. Can do, if time and tide will wait up a minute. In exchange, I would like a run down on the differences between the Apple versions and the PC versions... maps, graphics, save features, et al. Give you something to do while waiting for me to get a move on.

I suppose we can use Cap'n Llevram as an email go-betwixt rather than post email addresses here on the forum.

Post back if you're interested.

>I wonder... does Elvin Bishop still have a blues band? Hands, anyone.

Well, I'm afraid you got that all wrong... it's Elvis Priestley, and he's still
knocking on heaven's door

Thank you a six thousand times for your generous offer, but you better let
'em rust in peace I'd buy the games for six dollars (in German punctuation you even
kinda offered the package for that price , and I'd pay for the shipment extra - but
don't tell me that's another 5.994,00 $ (German punctuation)...

I got a divine inspiration a couple of days ago and tracked the game down from whence it
came... right, from the UWA CD... and very well, within the digital manual there is
a complete spell list.
By the way, have you ever used spells like Mogref or Sopic?
I think it's quite a waste of spell points to cast Morlis if you can kill the
monsters outright with Dalto.

Are you sure the Apple versions of Wizardry don't run on an IBM-PC? I know of some decent
Apple emulators (haven't tried one, though), but I'm clueless where to get and how to
transfer the original files. I seldom ever used Apples and to the present day I don't know
how you get your diskette out of the damn (sorry) drive without having to reboot
afterwards. And I dont't like Apples for inspiring Windows with the
klick-on-me-and-I-show-you-funny-pictures-but-I-won't-tell-you-what's-going-on system.

In the present state I'm not able to tell you the differences between the Apple and the DOS
version of Wizardry, because I've never played the former, I only read somewhere that all
items were intact and the levelups were more about gaining skills not losing them in the
Apple version.

Thanks again for your offer, but not until the Gods hear my plea or the Euro is massively gaining on the Dollar

I have a copy in the Apple format. As I still have two working Apple IIC's. I am not about to part with my Wizardry 1-5 in Apple format though. I love playing Wizardy on Apple for the noises you get when you kick the wall, if nothing else.

You might try Ebay. A few months ago, someone was selling the Wizardry Trilogy (1-3) for $5.00. Look around on Ebay and be patient. I can tell you where to find the maps online, if you are intersted.

Congrats on finishing Wiz 1.

Wiz 1 to 5 are readily available in the Apple II format. They are on the net or I could just e-mail them to you. Just ask.

There is an Apple II emulator on my web site to play them.

I must say that the Apple versions of the scenarios are much better, i-e, first its got 16 colours instead of 3(4 with white) and second they are not full of bugs like the IBM version and third some (minor I must say) things haven't been chopped off like in the IBM version.

Also 3 more wizardry scenarios are available on my site. They are all constructed out ot the original Wiz 1 Apple II engine.

I also have links to most other major Wizardry fan sites.

http://www.iosphere.net/~eric/wizardry/

Enjoy!

P.S. About the price of some weapons, here's my copy/paste answer I put in another forum:

-------------
Guess what, it is the same deal with the long sword +1 (15000g.p.) and long sword +2 (4000g.p.). My best estimate is that the
creators wanted to give you a better chance to pay at Boltac's to identify the items after you found them in the maze, just in case you
did not have a bishop in your party. Same for the Mace+1(12500g.p.) and Mace +2(4000g.p.). Funny, all the +2 items mentionned are
the same price! 4000g.p.! Another note, there is 2 short short+1 and 1 mace+1 at Boltac's when you start the game. Having them at a
high price prevents you from buying them too early. Also, the +2 items are harder to find as they are found in the treasure tables of
bigger monsters at lower levels in the dungeon compared to +1 items.

For the complete ->original<- list of items check my site.

10. "Juicy!"
Although I haven't found the emulator on Snafaru's site, I tried the link to Jim Hayes homepage and got the emulator plus Wiz 1-5. Eh... are they freeware then :? Or did I just do a very nasty ripping?

This quote is ripped from your (Snafaru's) field notes:
>I can't wait... Sir-Tech's ETA is, well, I guess, sometimes in 1999. It will be the continuation of #7 with new races and spells and it will have a unique high-res 3D
engine! See the preview pictures on the main page! Check out Sir-Tech's site for their FAQ about Wiz 8!

How long is it ago when 1999 seemed to be far far away?

Thanks for your tips, the only drawback is that it doesn't seem I can import my characters from PC Wiz1 to Apple Wiz2... well, except... but no, I won't

??? 16 colors?

MY apple versions had two colors... black background and white outlines that passed for walls and doors.

I had two monitors for my AppleIIe; and amber screen and an RCA color monitor (had to write a moire program for the color monitor as screen savers had not ye come out.)

If there is an apple version of these games, 1-5, that have GRAPHICS, I would love to seem them. I have the PC collection, 1-6, but they're for DOS and as it has oft been said, "Friends don't let friends drive DOS". But for GRAPHIC, 16 COLOR versions in Apple format, I would gladly drag out my IIgs and relive those wonderful days of yesteryear.

Tell me more.

on this very well made site, then enter the first entry A Critical Hit! and you'll find an Apple II and even a NES emulator and Wizardry 1-5. And instructions, if you need them.
