"Wrong encounters! (Captain Matey instead of Queequeg, etc.)"
Hi, everyone. I have been a long-term reader of this forum, but since I couldn't find my problem being addressed, I thought I had better post to see if there was anyone reading who might happen to know what I should do.

Basically, I have started playing Bane on DOSBox, not having made any changes to the files. Throughout the starting level, I noticed that I had been meeting rats and giant rats very frequently, but thought nothing of it. I realized that there was something wrong when I met rats even on the spire where there is supposed to be a fixed encounter with the vampire bats. I could deal with that-- but when I walked into the room where Queequeg was supposed to be, I met Captain Matey instead and was challenged to fight or drink! If I continue playing like this, the flow of the game will be seriously disrupted as I miss out on vital encounters.

I tried reinstalling Bane and DOXBox completely, both of which files I got from different sources, in case the files I had were corrupted. I tried using older versions of DOSBox to see if previous versions were more compatible. I also installed patches that were supposed to fix some minor bugs. Having done all this, I even tried starting a new save game just in case the save filed had become corrupted, but nothing has been working-- almost every encounter is with rats, and if it's not rats it's an encounter that's in the wrong place.

I have no idea what this issue is all about, so if anyone has any idea I would greatly appreciate it. I want to play Bane, and I want to play it normally!

(a) Where did you get your Bane files? If you are downloading them from a warez site (or similar) then they are more likely to be corrupted. Go legit.

(b) Download MadGod's Cosmic Forge, the ultimate wizardry editor. (Doing a quick search should give you a link to MG's site or a number of others hosting the editor.) Use it on Bane, and see what it says. If the encounter tables are only rats/giant rats, if Queequeg's encounter has been replaced with Capt'n Matey, etc., the files you are playing with have been hacked.

(a) I got my Bane files from the following sites:

http://www.oldgames.sk/en/games.php?article=216

http://www.classic-pc-games.com/pc/role_playing/wizardry_6:_bane_of_the_cosmic_forge.html

With both versions, I experienced the same issues, so I suspect that they are the exact same "data" (whether that is the issue or not).

I owned the original version back in the 90's, but those floppies are still stashed away somewhere at my parents' house. I also bought Ultimate Wizardry Archives a number of years after that, but lent the CD-rom to a friend. I don't mind buying such a great game again, but that would take some time and effort considering that I live in Japan, and I don't know if I will experience the same problem even with the legit version.

(b) I already inspected the files using MadGod's editor, and they seem normal. In the main level of the castle, I am only supposed to meet Rats 13.33% of the time, and Giant Rats 26.67% of the time. I am clearly supposedly to trigger the Queequeg incident in his appointed place as long as he is still alive, and the Captain Matey incident is located in its proper place. The encounter in the Belfry is set to be the specific monster "Vampire Bats" even though when I actually play the game rats keep popping out when I ring the bell.

I still suspect that the problem is not with the data files themselves, but with the way they are being processed (by DOSBox, or by the system files that come with the game).

Played Bane with DosBox quite while ago and have not found any discrepancies.
Try earlier versions of DosBox...

Thanks for the tips! I bought my third copy of Bane through an auction, and it has been working fine under the latest version of DOSBox (NPCs are in their proper place, and I'm meeting enemies other than rats). It seems as though in fact the files I was using had been corrupted-- and all the sites on the internet from where you can download Bane are featuring the exact same corrupt version of the files. I had never experienced such a problem before, but I guess in this case a bogus version of Bane just got spread around like a virus.
