"Solo Wiz8 Game"
Hi everyone,

I've been trying to start a solo Wiz8 game via importing a character from Wiz7 but it's been outrageously hard for me to get out of the monastery. I was wondering if anyone had some helpful tips. (I think it will be smooth sailing once I get to Arnika).

You found your disk then...?

What race/profession are you starting with?

Yeah I found my disc.

I tried starting out as a solo elf ninja with spear +2 imported as mystic spear and the elven bow. My first problem was that my skills were so low it took a lot of fights for me to actually be able to hit things. My second and larger problem was that by the time I could hit things, I was about level 8 or 9 and the groups of creatures spawning were so strong I couldn't possibly kill them =(.

I think I need some rush strategy to just go to Arinka - I haven't found a good one yet.

The game weights your encounters based on your level, irregardless of how many party members you have ... so when you import, you usually come in about level 5 ... so you are at a disadvantage.

I don't think you will find things any easier on your way to Arnika ... the only advantage you will have, if you make it there, is the wandering patrols ... surround yourself with them and let them help you out.

I'm not THAT big of a noob ;)

C'mon I already know that.

I was hoping for some advice as to how to GET to Arnika. So far, the best alternative I can think of it to stay near Burz and pull encounters to him to ensure I don't die while leveling up by bow skill as an elf ninja or ranger. I haven't tried it yet though.

You're forgetting that when you import, you come in with most non-magic skills ~20, and you have the EXPERIENCE for level 5. You don't have to immediately take it. You can "import" onto the beach at level 1, setting all of the initial monster generation to that level, and immediately level up. Just going to level 2 will give you a substantial edge on the initial monsters without causing dramatically stronger monsters to spawn.

Add to this the gear that a well-constructed import can have and there's really no contest. Try a bard with pipes of doom. (Terror is incredibly effective in a low-level area like the monastery.)

Thanks Scary, and one step ahead of ya:

I tested a solo female elf ninja (intending to switch to ranger at some point). I imported with ninja armor, elven bow, 2 diamond rings, 2 nunchucks, a Wakizashi, a stun rod, and stamina pots and arrows to boot.

I realized I could collect on my levels later, so I let my stealth build up to about 85 by letting crabs try to hit me all day long with my +3 HP Regen. By this point, I could walk around the entire monastery and make anyone, including Vi or Gregor, run from me if I just defended. (gregor did get lucky with paralyze and kill me once out of about 8 fights).

I reached Arnika as a level 1 ninja with 13 HP and an average of about 14 AC on expert difficult after completing everything in the monastery that you can on the first go round (even killed the fish) and only had to load a saved game when messing with chests and once for gregor.

I had something really weird happen after that though. I did a test and accepted 5 levels of ninja and with my stealth at 96, switched my 6th level to rogue hoping to level up close combat and sword (bloodlust) while getting my last 4 stealth. The game must register your class level as influential (rogue 1) b/c with 40-60 in close combat, sword, dual weapons, and dagger with bloodlust and a poison dagger, I couldn't hit trash level 6 Savant guards to save my life. I literally averaged a single HIT from 3 swings per round ONCE every 2.5 rounds. I had to burn stamina pots like crazy just to prevent the mobs from retreating. If anyone can explain this, I'd appreciate it.

This is a pretty important problem b/c my initial strategy was to do something like:

ninja level 1
bishop level 20+
ranger level left over

So that I could have all spells bishops get. However, if that will result in me being a TERRIBLE ranger (like level 5) then I need to know b/c that's a really bad idea. Other problems include getting pickpocket raised if I'm only ninja level 1.

Thanks!

**edit**

Another weird thing just happened. On one save game, I had my lvl 1 ninja finally get 100 stealth after returning to Arnika from retrieving the wheel key weapons from the monastery when I found lvl 22 Savant Henchmen in Arnika raping everything. =(

Keep in mind that Bloodlust automatically does berserk attacks, which reduces your hit chances. Combine that reduction with the further reduction from dual-wielding, and it does not seem incredible that you'd have some trouble. (The extra BL swing is also burning your stamina at least 50% faster, too.)

This is a known bug. Each area has a minimum character level that is used in the monster generators. If you enter that area with an average level BELOW that, the generators get all buggy and think you're a very high level, so they throw out the strongest monsters they have available.

I have documented some of the lower limits for the early areas in my own research. Enter the following areas at a level below that listed at your own, substantially increased peril:

LM: 1
UM: 3
AR: 4
MB: 4

I've been busy and haven't done more testing. However, it is the received wisdom that the lower limit for Arnika is 6.

Is there a way to stop the game from adjusting monster difficulty to your level?

It may have been intended as a useful game mechanic, but to me this is rather a nuisance. It spoils character building completely.

If there is a way to switch this off, please let me know.
