"Help please - game is glitching"
Hello!

I finally finished Wizardry 7 after all these years just so I could import a party into Wiz 8, which I've played through a few times.

On this computer however, I'm running into some serious glitches. The screen will randomly freeze from time to time (expiring after 1 minute or so), and worse, sometimes it'll act like it's skipping; Meaning, my characters will run super fast, the scenery will skip by, and graphical animations will reset when I mouse over them.

All of these go away when I restart my computer, but only for a short time.

I've updated all my drivers and run every manner of spyware and anti virus checks just to see if something was slowing it down.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance

I would say that your next step would be to reinstall W8.

See if that makes any difference.

I have run Wiz 8 on two machines.

On the 1.2 gigahertz machine I had some choppiness problems. I also had mouse problems and video problems OUTSIDE the game but not within.

On the 2.1 gigahertz machine I get occasional choppiness (when the hard disk access light is blinking green) and I did have the machine lock up in the bootup screen just last night. I had to hit the power switch.

How fast is your machine ? How old ? Which video drivers did you pick at install time ? Open GL or one of the others ?

Thanks for the replies.

The comp I'm trying to play it on is a 2.5 GHz AMD dual-core. Plenty of Ram, and an Nvidia GeForce 8800GT video card. This runs every game I've thrown at it at maximum settings pretty smoothly so far.

At Wiz8 auto-detect time, I selected the following:

DirectX7 (highest available listed even though I have DX 9.0c on this machine)

Creative Labs EAX 2 for sound

Display mode 1680 x 1050 x 32 (native resolution on my flatscreen. Running dual monitors, extending my desktop onto a 22" CRT on the other side of my desk.)

Not sure if it matters, but I'm playing the European version of the game. I found a deal on Ebay I couldn't pass up, and it's clearly legit, not copies. Only difference I can see from my old American version is that when I log off, I don't see the computer ad anymore.

As soon as I installed it, I got a green line appearing vertically on the far right side of my screen which goes on and off intermittently - quite possibly unrelated, but certainly coincidental seeing as it appeared the first time once I fired Wiz8 up.

I seem to have at least partially narrowed the freezing problem down to fire effects. Example: In Arnika, it freezes regularly for 20-30 seconds sometimes, but only when I turn my view in the direction of the fire in the ship. Another: When I summon an elemental, Air, Earth, or Water are fine, but if a Fire Elemental shows up, it freezes shortly thereafter for a period of time. I tested this several times, it's repeatable, and Fire Ants have done it to me too.

Restarting the game doesn't fix this OR the choppiness/stuttering run problems when they occur. Only restarting the whole computer, then starting Wiz8 again will stave it off.

I have tried reinstalling, doesn't seem to make a difference. I'm using the CC mod, but I was experiencing these problems before I installed it, so I don't think it's related.

Thanks for the input, if you can think of anything else I can try, or need more info, please lemme know, this is all I could think of that might be causing it.

-M

I wonder about the dual monitor thing ... I know some apps dont' play well with that. The fire thing is interesting, good to have that narrowed down. I know my PC gets a little sluggish when viewing fire as well ... I think it was a real problem before one of the patches.

That said, be sure you have all the patches installed for your version.

It is also interesting that you have Direct X 9, but it only lets you select 7. You might try switching to the other lesser mode (native, software, I forget what it is called) just to see how it behaves.

There are only 4 options that I remember, DX6, DX7, OpenGL, and Software. OpenGL caused some lines, but there is a different DLL around ( I have it ) that fixes that problem.

Yeah, I tried the other settings and noticed the lines; seems to break it into grid squares. I also tried killing my other monitor, to no effect.

Where might I find this DLL? It's getting tedious restarting every so often ~

9. "OK, some new info -"
I'm sort of determined to get to the bottom of this, but lack any particular tech savvy abilities. If any of you are computer geniuses, the last time it froze I found the location of the compiled error reports.

There were two files. One of them is a Wiz8.exe.mdmp - I'm not sure what that is, but opening it up in notepad told me it was a lot of code. If that is anything, I saved it and can send it.

Here is the appcompat.txt that came with it. I couldn't make a lot of sense out of this myself, but if anyone here knows about such things, heh, any help would be appreciated.

Reduce resolution to 1024x768 at least ,
or why not to 800x640?
Right-click on game-icon go to properties
select compability for 98

My guess is your PC is lacking in some of the requirements Wiz 8 wants to run (optimally). How do your PCs stats stack up against what Wiz 8 wants?

My old AMD 2600 ran Wiz 8 smoother than my new Intel 3.0 GHz dual core machine. I am not sure what it is, but I get some slight stutter on occasion. Note that vanilla Oblivion runs at 60 FPS with no problems.

What operating system are you using?

It looks like XP since you have dx9 but would like to know for sure.

In the meantime try some basic things like running a defrag - twice, check your virtual memory settings - set it higher than what it is, within the game try lowering some of the video effects just to see if it works any better.

Maybe I'll think of some other things when I get home from work

Always remember the Tleilaxu Epigram:
Here lies a toppled god
his fall was but a small one
we did but build his pedestal
a narrow and a tall one.

Good call actually, I haven't run a defrag in some time, and these drives are getting a mite cluttered.

And to the above poster, thanks a ton mate, I'll try that openGL patch and see how it works!
