"Guardian of the Rock"
Due to a computer shortage at my house (harrumph) I found myself stuck with a Pentium-60. So I used the opportunity to fire up a new game of Bane. I decided to "play it as it lies", taking the promotions as they happened (partly because the automatic Mo'Slo settings have the stats changing too fast to see and I'm to lazy to document my characters well).

So I'm wandering around Giant Mountain and am about to go way up high to collect boulders and, if I remember correctly, a gemstone. Is there any way to meet the guardian (if I even remember his name correctly) without fighting him? I mean, he starts a conversation, but I don't have a clue what he wants me to say so he doesn't get mad at me.

Mr.Moo, keeper of too many cutlasses...

You can feed him a boulder, but as to whether that makes it so you don't have to fight him, I don't remember... it's been a long time since I played Bane without killing everything in sight.

I never found out a way to get the 1st ruby eyeball (to open the black door and reach the styx) without figthing the guardian. He asks you if you come to take the rock. If you answer "Yes" he attacks, if you say "No" you could talk to him (or feed him) but don't get anything. If I remember correctly he attacks if you ask him about the "rock".

I also couldn't figure out the persuading words for the guardian to let me have his eyeball. There are two reasons why I think this problem can only be solved with the sword: First, I think the ruby is at least part of one of his eyes (they're glowing so threatfully), and I wouldn't give that away either. The second reason is game symmetry, since you have to slay Mau-Mu-Mu to get the second eyeball, it would be in accordance with cosmic harmony to kill also for the first one... but at least you can justify you actions, because they attack you and you just defend your bare naked life.

Ah, yes, I think there is a third way: you can level up and strengthen your characters until they are able to breach the door... I have to admit that's the way how I "solved" some of the riddles in Wiz 7.
