"Upping hybrid's mastery skills?"
I have 3 hybrids in my party, ranger, monk and valkyrie. In every combat I've been having them cast spells until they run out of points in an effort to have a high enough effective skill level to have a choice of all the new spells when they level up. The weird thing is that some combats, they don't increase in ANY magic skills and others, just one or two realm skills. On the other hand, my alchemist and priest cast one or two spells (I've got them boning up on their weapons skills because their mastery skills are so high) and they get an increase on their mastery and realm skills. What is going on here? Any ideas? All the party members are at or near level 8.

PS for the curious, the remaining party member is a bard

1. "What about their attributes?"
How do their attributes compare? The primary attributes for alchemy and divinity are dexterity and piety, respectively. (Intelligence is secondary for alchemy.) The primary and secondary attributes for all of the realm skills are intelligence and piety, respectively. You should expect characters with higher attribute scores to raise skill levels faster. Since hybrids generally have more point requirements than pure casters, I suspect that your casters are higher in their attributes, which should be at least a partial explanation for what you're seeing.

(Of course, I would be extremely curious if anyone has decoded the algorithm for skill increases. Anyone? Anyone? . . . Beuler?")

2. "RE: What about their attributes?"
Thanks, that might explain it, it depends on how important the secondary attribute is. For example, I can understand why my Priest with a piety of 98 would advance faster than my Valkyrie with a piety of 76 but why would my Alchemist with a dex of 60 do so much better than said Valkyrie? Could it be Valkyrie's intelligence is only 48 and Alchemists is 71? Does that make the difference? Is intelligence even a factor for Divinity spells?

Where can I look up the primary and secondary attributes for the different schools of magic?

3. "In Game - Right Click"
You can look up the controlling attributes by right-clicking on the skill in question. Right-click for more info goes for just about everything in the game.

What I noticed, is that intelligence seems to be very important for learning anything. I noticed that characters with high intelligence seem to get skill-increases far more frequently then 'dumb' characters. It doesn't seem to matter what class they are or wether it concerns magic skills increase or combat skills increase. It seems to me that how smarter, how faster they learn.

eg, With my present party, I have never put points in their combat skills (close, ranged and various weapon skills). Only in magic and expert skills. So every combat skill point they have, they earned themselves (except for the ones they already got in the beginning of course).:
My valkyrie is my 'dumbest' character with int 44. She lags behind in everything. We're lvl 19 now, and she still has only around 40 - 45 in her close and ranged combat. Her weapon skill from the weapon she's been using all this time (polearms) isn't very high either, and without the heavy valkyrie bonus to polearms and +20 from the dread spear she currently has, I think she would hardly hit something.
My ranger is my smartest character (not taking in account my bishops) with int 75 and he develops fine on his own. Close combat around 85 and ranged around 95. His sword skill is rather high as well.
I notice the same thing for my ninja (int 64); she is doing ok as well. And my lord (int 50) is lagging behind too, though not as bad as my valkyrie.
I 've given my lord now a brilliant helm (intelligence + 20) and am observing if the learning rate depends on his base intelligence, or wether item bonuses count as well.
