"Bane spell bug for PC?"
Hi,

I am a long time fan of Bane, after playing it for many years on the Amiga and have recently bought the 'Ultimate Wizardry Archives' for the PC on a CD.

Bane works great under DOSBox but one major difference between the Amiga version and PC is that most powerful of spells do not work for the PC. These are the 'effect all' spells, such as Nuclear Blast, Asphyxiation etc. All I get is the 'unaffected' message for each monster while clearly this is not so on the Amiga. My Amiga characters are up to about level 60 and have never had a problem (I will find an excalibur one day...) Do I have a bugged PC version? It is very annoying. Nothing better than taking out 3 Defenders and 24 Dark Crusaders with a Death Wish!

This is my favourite game of all time, even beating the mighty Dungeon Master!

Thanks for any help.

Oh yes, this brings back memories. I've played through Bane multiple times on the good ol' Amiga...

Anyway, the spells work fine in the UWA - Version of the game. You certainly are aware of the fact that you can't suffocate, for example, a skeleton, aren't you?

The death wish spell also doesn't work too well with many creatures. Your own vs. the enemies level is taken into account, among other things, so maybe your UWA - Party simply isn't advanced enough to Death Wish the monsters.

I can't explain, why the Nuclear Blast doesn't work, though. Except from a very few monsters, most creatures should at least take minimal damage from the Blast.

You're correct that you cannot rely upon the "affect all" spells. In my own experience, they will work (a) the first few times you use them (I'm trying to figure out, myself, if there is some counter in the game that keeps track of how many times they have been cast; (b) when cast by a summoned creature; or (c) when you "backfire" with the spell.

Thanks for the replies.

It definately seems to be PC only thing. I have recently completed a WINUAE game, finishing at about levels 12 for the characters and the spells nuclear blast and asphxiation work fine on the monsters they are supposed to. The level 60 character game, they all work fine too. However every PC game I have of Bane these spells have never ever worked (unless backfire and cast by other monsters). Weird.

I too have experienced this bug while playing the PC version. Just the spells you have waited forever for, the ones that make your spellcasters useful at the end of the game (Nuclear Blast, Death Wish, Word of Death, Asphyxiation, Mind Flay) become 100% ineffective, and you're forced to attack enemy groups one at a time with Fireball, Iceball, etc. Every now and then, your spells will blast away and kill all of the enemies, but then in the next battle-- even against the exact same type of monsters-- your spells won't do a single thing.

I did read something on a Japanese website that may explain the bug in certain versions of Bane though. According to this website, the effect-all-monsters spells become 100% ineffective (regardless of your level, the enemy's level and resistance) when the first enemy group has been partially or completely diminished. From my understanding, the website goes on to suggest having your fighters not attack the first enemy group while your magic users use their mass-target spells, and if the first enemy group is especially dangerous, put them to sleep or paralyze them, as long as you keep them alive the longest.

I will test out this theory the next time I play Bane!!!

If you understand Japanese and want to check it out for yourself, this website (about Bane mainly) is awesome and explains some of the differences between the different versions of BCF, such as Super Famicom or PC.
