"how to involve my monk into close combat?"
Among my party is a monk with two attacks and two swings per attack in close combat and with one meager shot in ranged combat. This explains my wish to get her involved in close combat. But the course of most of the recent battles prevented this. Because of her high initiative (the highest in the party), it was my monk's turn when the monsters were still apart from my group. Therefore she dished out darts/shurikens. Then some monsters got into close range and got slaughtered by my other frontliners. Next rounds, the same.

When I delay my actions using the "walk" option, the monsters come into close range, but then the sequence of my characters is no longer determined by initiative, but by their placement on the screen. First is the character on left/top (an RPC), next is right/top (another RPC), then the characters in the second line act. My monk is placed left on the third line. When it is her turn, all monsters in close range already died, and again she has to throw darts instead of kicking the bad guys.

Any idea or suggestion to circumvent my problem is welcome.

There is a round screen that pops up on the lower right corner of the screen. This shows where everyone is standing in relation to everyone else. Click that, then drag everyone to the front, middle or sides. Maybe your monk is in the middle with the spellcasters ?

What is the monks speed ? What is her level?

Thanks, rbrown, for your reply.

>There is a round screen that pops up on the lower right corner of the screen.

I am aware of the party position tool (I forgot the name of it, which was mentioned in the manual). In fact, I am actively using it for changes during combat, if the situation requires it. Btw., I think this is one of the best additions to the wizardry series and adds a highly welcome strategical element to the battles.

>What is the monks speed ?
>What is her level?

All my team members are 9th level, beside RPCs Myles and Vi, who are 8th level. In front are fighter, monk and thief, left flank is occupied by Vi, right flank by my ranger, situated in the center are priest and mage, and the bard protects the back.
Concerning initiative, speed and senses (-> initiative) for my close combat specialists:
monk ini: 25(23+2) speed: 78 senses: 70
fighter: ini: 18(14+4) speed: 58 senses: 40
Myles: ini: 24(22+2) speed: 77 senses: 65
Vi: ini: 11(17-6) speed: 65 senses: 50

If I could change the characters' lineup at both sides of the screen (as in previous wizardry games) and could put her on the top/left position, I could use the "walk" option as described in my previous posting. But I think the sequence of appearance is fixed in wizardry8. At least I found no possibility mentioned in the manual.

2. "Drop her initiative or change your lineup"
If she is more encumbered, she won't act first. If you change your party lineup, to put her in the middle upper quadrant and the rest of the party behind her, then she will have a better chance at close combat.

But, if you are wiping out all the opponents before a character gets to get into melee ... that is hardly somethign to complain about And, it will change ....

Thanks, Llevram, for your reply.

Yes, this sounds like a nice workaround. But doesn't her AC drop, too? Anyhow, I will try it.

Ok, but my plan was to let her act first to possibly score criticals against fresh enemies, before my heavy melee guys/girls reduce the hitpoints of the others.

(Laughing) You are right. But my monk complains that she is hardly doing the job which she was hired for, and that she is lacking training in martial arts, close combat, critical strike and stealth.

> And, it will change
>....

That is her and my hope.

Changing your lineup outside of combat seems to be your best option. There is a formation.

0 0
L 0 00 0 R
0 0

This formation provides maximum melee power front and back snd somewhat less on the sides.

I added "pre" and "/pre" tags (within square brackets) to "PREserve" the text as typed ... it sort of works

7. "Think of an "H""
I personally would think of a Tie-Fighter but just saying that must make me sound like I'm Obsessed with Star Wars.
