It'd make the alliances so much easier just kill everything on sight. Rape the Women, Sack the Towns, Steal and Cause Chaos. You should play both sides (which you can also do, at the same time) and decide which is best for you. I don't think either alliance has anything in particular that would cause me to choose one over the other ... just the mood my party is in, and how I am role-playing the game usually makes the decision.
