"Game's toughest Battles"
I have just conqured (after 4 attempts) one of the toughest and most enjoyable battles. In the game. It was the one in the temple in the SE Wilderness (Queen, 2 Death Knights, Lots of Elementals). What are you guys' opinion on your favorite toughest battles?

The rapax at Ascension Peak. If you don't kill the daughter quick enough, she'll spawn enough templars to drown you.

In the Rapax Castle before becoming a Templar, I got swarmed by 12 Rapax Samurai, 6 Rapax Warlocks, 6 Rapax Archers, and 12 Rapax Beserkers. The last 2 groups "joined in" as I was taking out the Samurai and Warlocks. Of course I'm right in middle of the big room in the downstairs level, so my party was surrounded. The sheer number of the Rapax starting wore down my stamina and my spell casters ran out of spells. My gadgeteer was able to keep everyone alive with the Regenerating stone.

The climax of the battle was actually when I thought it was over. A couple of the Warlocks who had been scared by a Pandemonium spell returned at the very end when the last Samurai was being killed. I was simply out of stamina and out of spells and they were attacking from a distance. Eventually I triumphed and I think the experience points total was about 1.5 Million split 6 ways.

That was a great battle.

Yes, I think the Rapax army is the toughest too -- lucky the Prince and the priestess are both vulnerable to Death Cloud and instant kill...

But for the one my party never would have won without luck, it's the SE Wilds cathedral -- I only won when one of the Death Lords' Death Wish spells backfired and killed everyone on their side except the 2 Death Lords, the Sorceress Queen, and a Fire Elemental! And even then it was brutal.

And again, only won the cathedral battle because Eye for an Eye reversed a Death spell and killed all the elementals and cultists.

At the ascension peak, random encounter, 3 armegazers (level 50).
15+ million experience total.

At that time my party was composed of a Level 40+ solo ranger (female human).

From a distance they were not hard to kill, but the short range fight was so dangerous as they can knock-out easily.

Seriously, there are many that are just unwinnable when you are not high enough level, short of 1,000 reloads and a miracle or two.

I don't think any were as nail-biting as the crows in Orkogre (dfferent post), because things seemed a bit erratic. You might go a few rounds taking little or no damage from Nessie, then *wham* one or two characters bite the dust in one round (or with one spell cast).

There are a lot more tactics involved in Wiz 8 compared to Wiz 7, so that in itself makes things interesting. I think the soul eater was one of the toughest, as I always seemed to get my entire party incapacitated before I could hardly dent the thing. That and the cloud djiins and greater demon, guarding the one entrance to place the artifact on AP .... I don't think I have ever beat those guys, just sneak or run around them.

I remember those horrible, horrible black birds. One of the times I played I went down the hole to where they were too early and finally had to go back to another save because I just couldn't get them all before they got me (and with the irreplacable loss of vitality everytime I wasn't willing to use a resurrect - wanted to save them for a few other choice fights).

My toughest battle so far has to be on the Arnika - Trynton Road: 7 Juggernaughts, 4 Crimson Poppies, 2 Iron Weeds, 2 Greater Seekers & 4 Lesser Seekers. My party were level 8/9 at the time. It took over an hour real time, used most of my goodies and really got the old heart pumping.

That is one dangerous piece of road & where are the H.L.L. when you need them?

The one battle that pissed me off the most was near where Rex totters about...10 swallerers, 6 woddsprites, 8 hogars ,1 brute hogar, 15 swarming wasp and 5 nightmares and a few more things that i have forgotten the name of....though i did cower in a corner where only 1 could get me at a time...the only thing that nearly did me in was insanity and turncoat where my fighter decided it would be incredibly funny to hack my preist and wizard into little peices then cackle madly to no-one inparticular....

Don't you just hate it when that happens. Mind you, isn't it amazing just how effective your characters become when they are attacking fellow party members.

O.K. who has got the cure insanity amulet? Oh, it's you with the drool running down your chin! Why are you looking at me like that? No, no, don't, Ahhhggg......

I found the battle with Nebdar (level 28 spell caster) tough. She was accompanied by 8 Rapax Wraiths and a Gibberring Head. My party consisted of a level 15 faerie ninja at the time. Damned nice item you get from her though. Plus what is in the locked door behind her.

Once you get one character past level 30 the battles on ascension peak step up a gear.

Level 30 seems to be a trigger point for Blistering Scorchers to Magma Scorchers, Bitter Wings to Death Wings. The average level opponent is then around level 35 - big experience points. Those gazer things step up a level as well and have a very nasty habit of turning even high level characters insane. Nothing like friendly fire from a level 30 Faerie Ninja with the Cane of Corpus or a level 34 Lizardman Figher with a Dread Spear - OUCH.

Also level 30 seems to trigger all sorts of hell spawned creaures like Dnjin's of every discription and other demonic creations - which can be tough.

Other than those level triggered battles which can be tough but enjoyable, I always look forward to the SE wilderness battle and think that is the best repeatable battle in the game.

My two cents isn't as impressive as I have never reached past level 25. But when I was level 10-12ish, depending on the character, I wandered into the mines area and recruited rfs-81. I promptly decided to rest since i just came back from those nasty swamp bugs and slept in the little hut. Little did I know the mines area was even more dangerous than the swamp. I actually got through the rest and was not attacked, but as soon as I woke up, all my spells had gone out and what did I see? A mass of red dots on my radar. A full quarter of the screen was jammed packed with monsters. Battle commenced immediately and I counted 37 flying insects swarming outside my little hut. I had everything from souldrinkers, tiger mosquitoes, tanto wasps, and even a group of spiders to boot. Shouldn't the spiders eat the wasps? Anyways, I thought I was relatively safe, but it turns out that the bugs can attack through the windows of the hut, so I was pretty much surrounded. It was sight enought o make me want to reload immediately. But I toughed it out and beat them after like 40 minutes. I never rested in the mines area again. Am more phobic of that place than ascension peak.

By far, the SE wilderness is my favorite/hardest. Fighting this battle w/o a Purify air spell/scroll/item is guaranteed to put a run on resurrection powder. The first time thru Rapax Castle (without benefit of becoming a templar) is for those that want a fight every few feet, Nessie- alright, but Brombhedig was tougher (and let's not start on the Hall of Gorrors, man that was tough!), AP Battles- honestly, the 1st time thru I don't think I lost anyone. Just dumb luck I guess.

I'm still like levels 11-13 now, so I think in the SE wilderness, 5 frightmares. Nothing like having my lizardwoman fighter and dracon/human valkyries((one weilding dual halbreds and the other a stun mace and enchanted mace)) start attacking everyone, and killing my faerie bard who was the only one who could use the Amulets of Life.((Why can't anybody sell Resurrection Powder in Trynton or the Swamp anymore? )) I ended up reloading my saved game from that little fight. Not looking forward to Ascension Peak or Nessie.

Generally that battle is the hardest for me, I keep getting surrounde by elementals but I once got surprised by six ensnaring spiders in mount gigas, I would have one of my party free up for one shot everynow and then and when my bishop got free I had her read a heal all scroll, it was a long slow fight with each side being nibbled to death. Oh and those damn psy sharks in the underwater caves suck too.

couple the ways I've dealt with these tough battles, that seems pretty effective. As far as the soul stealer is concerned, ive never really had trouble with him. Once you get within short range, he ko's very easily and becomes mince meat via my main fighters, so I usually hide behind a rock until he gets very close then try to surprise attack. It works well.
The two cloud djinn and greater demon: same tactic. there's a large rock there, i'll get behind that, initiate combat, and send a spell around the corner to let them know where i am, then force them to use up movement getting to me while my guys remain fresh and ready to hack into em.

As far as that temple battle with the death lords, i always lose at least a couple lives fighting that one, but the easiest way i've found of doing that one is run...straight at the sorcerous. Before battle make sure all aid spells are up and then head straight in between the death knights and kill her. once she's dead, the rest is cake (silence works pretty well on the other priestess' that summon the golems)

I mostly play on easy or normal difficulty.

The toughest battle thus far for me in some time was when I had an imported party from CoDS where I started with the T'Rang. I wanted to recruit Tantris and RFS-81 so I went to the mine tunnels. On the way I encountered some low level frogs and centipedes, nothing special. But when I crossed the bridge, I was ambushed by 15 wasps, 1 Rynjin Scavenger and 3 Rynjin sentries. In the first round the wasps surrounded me. In the second round i got Shrill Sound-ed and Psionic Blast-ed to death. Good thing I saved before going in the swamp, the second run was easier, I only ran into low-level stuff. The mine tunnels are hard too for level 5-6 characters; those savant troopers really pack a punch. Eventually I was insane'd by the goo of a queen ant, but luckily I survived due to the canned Elemental I found in the swamp. Recruited RFS-81 and Tantris, and had a very convenient and early access to the T'Rang teleporter house on A-T road. I think this is one of the more difficult starts you can take. The umpani one is easier, because you really only have to worry about evading the Hogar on the A-Road.

i was just thinking... what if you took on all those gigas peak hordes of umpani. i don't know how their levels change as yours increases, but my god, there are so many patrols up there. I'll go look again and try to see how many would fight me if i attacked them but it seems like it'd be a pretty insane fight to me.

Mosts are sergeants and lieutenants, they shoot at you with their guns, with could be painful if you haven't got the Missile Shield spell up. The toughest umpani in a patrol are the Commanders, they fire at you repeatedly with blunderbusses, and are known to bezerk at you with their swords. But this provides a lot of experience, just like killing of all T'Rang. If you kill everyone at Mt. Gigas Peak, the mobs don't respawn, there, and you can walk around it safely. Also, If you choose to destroy the umpani by doing the last T'Rang mission (destroy the mothership) you have to fight your way back to the wilderness, unless of course you can conveniently portal out of there. This triggers umpani patrols to appear in the northern wilderness; they will shout at you when they see you and then attack. Same as for T'Rang, if you destroy their teleporter, T'Rang patrols will be in the swamp.

thats disappointing : \
I was talking to the umpani general with my same lvl 15/16 4 person party and decided it'd be fun to attack him and after several tries i won, to my surprize and found the items, experience, and effort rather lacking. Commanders do get lots of instant kills, however. But i find it disappointing that there aren't more random high level creature to kill. In wizardry 7, **SPOT** had 2-3k hit points as i recall, nessie only has 800 something, not to mention the bug that had 9999, and so it just seems like sirtech should have taken the time to put more random bosses in the game. I mean, the umpani general isn't even hard to kill.... its just kinda sad : \

heheheh right now I started a new party, 3 ninjas and 3 monks, for the sole purpose of eradicating all life on Dominus. Quite cumbersome to start out such a party; they wear poor armor and must rely on their stealth skill for more AC.. which of course they are training. Instakilled Burz at level 2; Gregor wasn't a big problem too... right now I've exterminated all of Trynton and am at mt. Gigas... I wanted to go to balbrak but sparkle was hostile to my party. She attacked me, and balbrak and some other rhino's joined the fight... oh, well... let's see for myself how pickled trynnie tastes

Yeah, I have a 'criticals' party, rarely played so far...

2 samurai
2 ninjas
1 Monk
1 Ranger

spell casting will be a pain for a while, but the thought of instant kills is nice...mostly, everybody is working on speed, and dex with close combat, critical strike, stealth, and weapons being concentrated on..

Almost forgot...

as for toughest battles..

Cloud Djinns & Greater Demons on AP, Hordes of Rapax on the Rift, the Rynjin in the Swamp/Bayjin..pretty much bypassed Bayjin because of them...

As for the SE Demon Lord/Sorceress fight, I used Death Wish, with Earthquake & Mind Flay to kill them down to the 2 lords and sorceress.. then I headed on in and hacked them to peices...

on AP, I was level 21 thru 23rd, and mostly with dumb luck, I only lost 1, resurrected him the next round, and he did an instant kill to a Greater Demon in round 3...

Oh and the Rapax army on AP, I had to use Death Wish with Earthquake & Mind Flay 3 rounds, before enuf were killed that I could move in for my fighters to finish them off

Funny, Death Wish was just a waste of SP in the Rapax battle for me. I was actually quite lucky, had an instant kill on the demoness in the second round, not giving her any chance to summon in reinforcements. Used Pandemonium to have the rest of the bunch soften each other up. The Prince was gone pretty quickly as well, I am not quite sure if it was an instand kill or if my fighter and Samurai had him hacked to pieces that fast. Once he had Fang, the Fighter was a real killer, especially with Superman cast on him.

I managed to sneak past the Djinns, so can't say how tough they would have been. Souleater was a pain, I only managed to beat it once I accepted that the pure casters would die in the battle. What was laughably easy was Furor, because he was stunned in the first round and never woke up...

The Temple in the SE Wilderness was interesting. First time around, I had to give up. Second time, much higher level, I actually found the fight while fun to be still a relatively easy victory. Made sure the Cultists were mainly busy with each other through Pandemonium, sent in an Elemental to occupy the Death Lords. Softened the Death Lords up with Banishment and then hacked them to pieces. When I wanted to move on to the Sorceress, my stupid Ninja managed to get an insta-kill on an accidental throw at the Elemental. "Perfect" haha. But she went down anyway.

Even though I found Elementals to be far too dumb in the offensive, often just standing around, missing, or casting 0-2 damage fireballs, I still like them as a distraction and as "walking sandbags". At least people shooting at them don't shoot at the party. Though of course if they DO manage to hit with a punch, they make pretty good damage. Though my fighter still topped them near the end ;)

SE Wilderness by a long shot. Have a post somewhere with my incredible luck, er TACTICS, that won that battle.

Also: Nessie, Souleater, Rapax Castle (before Templar) and the final battle (which I'm not going to describe).

Another of note: The mines area, got caught between three random patrols. 21 different wasps & 9 Tse Tse Flies. Fortunately, I was in a hut, and far enough away from the windows that they were forced one or two at a time. Webs & fireballs flew thick and heavy

I had a terrible fight in Trynton today. My lvl 11-12 party ran into 3 windsprites and 6 swarming wasps. Thought I could handle it, when I saw the 3 sprites in the doorway to a hut. But every time I tried to run up to the sprites, one of the wasps came between us and blocked the way. Had to take them out first, and in the meantime, the sprites asphyx'ed my party. Ended up with 6 deaths, 2 of them 2 times even.. Didnt have eye for an eye spell/scroll or element shield at the time.

This was a terrible experience .

Later on in the same game (lvl 13-14) I ran into 5 dreadmares in the swamp. I had 1 canned elemental, which I used.....
They reared of course, turncoated 6 out of 8 partymembers !!!

Myles, one of the turncoated, hacked down 5 of his fellow party members, using Thieves Dagger and Bloodlust.
Did I forget to tell that my elemental was turncoated as well?
Of course, I thought this was an impossible battle, thought about reloading right away. But then I just wanted to see the outcome of it. After 3-4 rounds, Myles turns "friendly" again, my party now only counting 2 living souls- Myles and Alchemist.
Believe it or not, Myles took out all the dreadmares and the elemental alone !
After the battle, I teleported back to Arnika(temple) and spent all my gold on resurrection powders......
One thing for sure; I've got respect for Myles...

I would have to agree with their it was a tough battle indeed! especially when those bloody death knights cast death wish at party and managed to hit 3 of my party members succesfully.

The hardest battle I have found so far was with my solo ninja in the repaks castle. Several warlock(5) and beserkers(12). The main problem was the shop keeper was trying to help and I had to waste every second round healing him so that he did not die.
