"Yet another bug"
I haven't seen the trouble I've run into here yet, so:

Running wiz 8 under win xp I have the following behaviour. When I start it after installation, my wiz8.exe is approx. 100k in size, starting it yields "one moment please", and then I can run wiz8 without problems (having disk 3 inserted, maybe some copy protection?). The second time I start wiz8.exe it's 2.5M in size and gives an access violation immediately when I start it. Doesn't matter what sound/grafx i choose, boom right away. I tried to install it a couple of times, reboot, same result.
Then i found out, that it's possible to dump the 2.5M and copy the 100k wiz8.exe and run that a second time (ad. inf.).
Since this obviously isn't the regular use, I was just asking if one of you knows
a) if this remedy can be cured
or
b) if working with the 100k copy does make me lose features. (well, probably ironman, but that's not such a big problem for me ;)

Thanks,

Ferro

1. "Only 2.5 meg ?"
I checked mine last night - Wiz8.exe is 3.267 meg !!

I also have a "Alternate Safedisc" folder, containing a file that is 3.497 meg !!

When you run it for the first time, do you get dumped into the video setup screen? Try running the other .exe in the area, 3DSetup.exe I think, then wiz8.exe.

2. "RE: Only 2.5 meg ?"

running 3dsetup doesn't change the wiz8.exe. only the wiz8.cfg and 3dvideo.cfg. Strange that your wiz8.exe is so much larger. do ironman games get saved in the exe?

oh and i dont get dumped to the video setup. just one moment pls, and then it's running. the video setup is launched only if the .cfg files are missing.

Forgot to mention, it's 1.2.4 (unpatched) and the box says for use & sale in europe and middle east only (?!)

3. "RE: Only 2.5 meg ?"
I have WinXP Pro xp2400, 512 pc2700, gf4 ti4200..and just bought this game last night.

I am not having a single problem with the game. Before I installed it I d/l the patch from 3dgamers.com.

In the readme it addresses the issue that you have described. So far I got my guys to lvl 7 and went to bed without a single glitch. I am running it at 1024x768 32bit, and am using my board's integrated audio.

4. "Patch? wich one?"
Are you talking about the 2001_12_23 patch? it says that it updates to version 1.2.4, and that's the version i have already. and in the description of the changes the problem isn't mentioned. Plus that the patch should be applied after installation, i guess you're talking about something else?

5. "Check your RAM"
One or mure of your RAM chips may have gone sour. Also check to see if your are running any RAM intensive applications at the same time If you are the conflict could drop your available RAM to below 64 Meg . This can cause freeze.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-21-03 AT 12:22 PM (Pacific)

I doubt that my RAM could be sour. Everything else on the machine runs fine. And even though there's only 256 MB in there, the problem is not running low on RAM. The wiz8.exe created on startup is plain buggy: when I debug it, an int 3 does an access violation (as far as i can see).

7. "Are you in Europe or the Middle East?"
(Not sure how the PC/game would detect that and key off it to operate differently ... I know my products don't work with the Chinese version of Windows ...)

Anyhow, I think that may be normal (the install of one size, but different size after you run it thing .. not the crashing part). My .exe is 3.497KB, but if you look at any of the "use without a CD" cracks, they look for an exe of about 100K (I think).

8. "RE: Are you in Europe or the Middle East?"
I'm in Europe. Germany to be precise, and I somehow doubt that wiz8 won't work with the german version of Windows. And as i said, the game seems to run fine, the copying of the .exe being more a nuisance than a problem. Other troubles bug me more (not sure if they are related):

If I switch to another task (alt-tab), and switch back to wiz8, the game seems to think I'm moving (pressing 'C' yields: "cant camp while moving" or so), which means: I can't move anymore (cursor keys don't do anything), and I can't reach the options to do a save (ugh); quicksaving might be possible, I've read about that feature only recently and haven't tried yet.

Does anyone have an idea how I could tell the game to stop to think i am moving?

9. "Given the behavior ..."
... and that no one else (normally) encounters such things, it is most likely something "wrong" with your system. The ususual answer is drivers, though more and more people are finding other "background" programs aren't staying in the background as much as they are supposed to (or as much as Wiz 8 wants them to).

10. "Sounds sensible..."
But I just have difficulties to envision where there trouble is localised, since the machine I've installed it on is an almost clean xp install from a retailer. Oh well, guess I'll have to live with it (keeping an eye open).

Thanks for the help

11. "Clean, from the retailer ... hmmm"
My wife's XP machine came the same way ... but would start up everytime the phone rang, wanting to answer the phone, thinking iti must be the mothership calling for information.

A few calls and days later we got around to finding out I needed to download the hot fix.

Don't count on your out of the box machine to be 100% of what it should be.

12. "Doh"
A couple of days ago i realized that sirtechs tech support is still alive, and today i had a look at http://www.wizardry8.com/index2.html
just to find out that this bug is even mentioned there. They said reinstalling the game in a path with short names (like /wiz8) could help, and, crazy as it may sound, indeed it did help for me.

After some months of starting the game by copying and rebuilding, now i can start the game the way it's meant to be.

Just goes to show that I stop thinking sensefully once i fire up wiz8 ;)
