"Temple o' Ramm: left or right items"
I was just curious if anyone knows/knows of a list of items, if any, that are exclusive to goine either left or righ at the 2 choices with keys. I seem to remember having discussions about this long, long ago but forget all the conclusions made about it.

1. "Does it matter?"
IIRC, the chests that can be found to your left and to your right contain only the keys to the gates. So the items you can find there are the monster drops. The monsters are random encounters, so the items are random, too.

I guess that I'll be corrected if my memory fails me...

Yes, what you said is correct. To be more specific I was wondering if there are item drop from monsters that are exclusive to the left or right, as you encounter different types of monsters depending on your left or right choice.

3. "Do you?"
Are there different random encounters, depending on whether to take the left or the right path? I think they are the same, for I've encountered all the high-end - monsters on my way through the temple:

Grandfathers, Twisted (?) Sylphs, Priests of Ramm, Defender, Mindflayer, those undead spellcasters, Greater Demons.

Have I missed / forgotten any?

Or, maybe I've misunderstood you again: Those aren't set encounters! Instead, they are random, each time you go through the temple you have to fight different monsters. The monsters vary only with the difficulty-level and the temple's floor you're on.

The monsters you listed are all found by going left at the 2nd key. There are differences, for example choosing to go left will yield encounters with greater demons and going right yields encounters with pit fiends, they are exclusive encounters depending on the left/right choice. I think there are other difference in monsters encountered and chances to gain specific dropped items exclusive to the left/right path. I had always chosen to go left, thinking only greater demons dropped excalibur as loot, but on a thread somewhere on this message board I saw it mentioned that pit fiends (from the right hand side) can also drop excalibur. So I am now curious, wondering what items drop on what side so I can decide which path will be best to equip my paty with from.

5. "Why not try both?"
Many people don't realize it, but it is possible to go into the rooms on BOTH routes - and you don't even have to edit in extra keys. Try this: get on the ledge outside one of the Temple rooms, and just "spin" (or, if you're like me and don't want to get dizzy, just hold the back-arrow key) until you get an encounter. "Hide" your party or otherwise neutralize the monsters without killing them, and then "run" from the combat. With the exception of the first area in the Temple, you can "run" across the gaps between ledges. You can use this either to avoid some of the encounters or even to get into the rooms on the other path.

I have also noticed the difference between the two routes. The right-hand gate seems to produce mostly fighter types: Dark Crusaders, etc. The left-hand gate seems to produce mostly spell-caster types: Mind Flayers, etc. There are some minor differences in the treasure chests. For example, (although I'm not completely sure and can't check it here, at work)I think on the left-hand route one chest has an ankh of life, while the parallel chest on the right-hand route has an ankh of death.

Scary, *awesome* tip -- I have to try it!

On my last run through Bane (almost a year ago), I started a project around this very issue. I was trying every combination of left and right, multiple times, and writing down the groups of monsters you'd find in each section of the temple. I didn't finish my experiment, but I seem to recall that there was some variation (IIRC, you could find mind flayers both on the left or right paths), but once you went to an area and the encounters were calibrated, they would NEVER include monsters outside of that "set". But, I think if you reloaded just before you opened the gate of a particular section, you could generate a slightly different "set" of monsters in that area. Again, I would have to look at my notes or redo my experiment to give more accurate information.

However, the real issue is with greater demons and pit fiends, which are never found together. Nothing else drops anything overly important, except priests of ramm (which are always available) and keepers of the crystal (if you have a psionicist). According to the treasure table I have seen, they *should* drop the same set of "best" items, but given the rarity of GD/PF encounters, and the rarity of the special drop (2% I believe), it is VERY hard to determine if GDs only drop some of the items and PFs others, or if one is more likely to drop a particular item. But using Scary's method, you can try both in the same game without editing keys! (Also, I think accursed ones, found very rarely in or near the dark forest, can drop from the "best" treasure list -- I found a zatoichi bo this way.)

LAST EDITED ON Jun-25-04 AT 04:32 PM (Pacific)

Welcome to our* boards, where new contributors are always welcome, and I am especially gladdened to encounter more Bane afficionados.

If you still have a Bane treasure list / drop list, I'd be grateful if you posted it or posted a link to it. It's one thing we are currently missing. Apsen used to host some of that information, but he disappeared into the ether some time ago, and his links no longer work.

EDIT: Well, that's embarrassing: because of the low number of posts, I just assumed you were new, but checking the w6 treasures post, I see a post from last year. Well, the welcome still stands.

*Well, they aren't really my boards, but I've been here for a very long time. While not the restaurant owner or even the maitre d', I think of myself as the long-time patron who has a reserved booth.

Thanks, Scary! I am also gladdened to see that people still talk about this game, as well as the other Wizardrys, and ponder their mysteries While I might be a long-time player, you have delved to depths that are truly impressive, with posts on how karma works (and its internal representation), mana regen by character position, etc. Keep up the good work!

Anyway, see the other thread for a link to the treasure table.
