"Bard's Tale"
Playing Wizardry 7 reminds me of the old Bard's Tale games I played on my Commodore 64 (which btw had many more options on game maps than Wiz 7). Bard's Tale 1 is a classic game that I will never forget. My friend and I played it together (we each had 3 char out of 6 that were "ours"), and it took us forever to get past level 1. We were very competitive and wanted the other person's characters to die. As a result, we weren't doing save/reloads, and Bard's Tale was a tough game. It is a shame that technology has passed this type of game by, and all new RPG's attempt to combine First Person Shooter with RPG.

.. the other would say "it's a shame they stayed stuck in the past and didn't keep up with advances in game play".

Well Bard's Tale passed away before First Person shooters. They just decided that after 3 versions of the game, the story was done. I wasn't referring to Bard's Tale 4 so much, as the death of the old genre. There are RPG's out there that combine first person shooter with RPG, however I am playing Wiz 7 right now, not one of those games. While I can enjoy a 3d game, I also miss the fun of some of the older games. At times, a 3d perspective inhibits gameplay instead of adding to it.

I remember reading the name of the splash screen of Bard's Tale 2 as "Destinq Knight" for a long time, before I realized with the help of a dictionary what the true name would be.
The game had a very catchy tune for character creation, but I never advanced far in the dungeons. I think I missed some kind of direction what I was supposed to do anyway. The animated profession portraits were cool, and map making was just as fun as in Wizardry.

My favorite rpg for the C64 was The Mars Saga, though.

4. "RE: Bard's Tale"
I just recieved the new Bard's Tale by InXile. I preordered it expecting to be able to play it on my system, which is an AthlonXP 2400+ with 512MB RAM and Radeon AIW 9600 graphics card running Windows 98SE.
<p>
Amazon.com has Bard's Tale listed as running on Windows98, but at least my copy has a sticker on the box stating that it requires Windows2000 or WindowsXP, and the readme files (yes it did actually install on Windows98SE), reiterate Windows2000 or WindowsXP, even going so far as to state it will not work on Windows XP64.
<p>
I might seriously consider upgrading to Windows2000, except I can find no mention whatsoever with regards to Athlon's. The box states requires Intel Pentium III or better, recommended Intel Pentium 4. My nephew bought Texas Holdem the other day. He can't run it on his Athlon4 because it requires SSE. The Athlon4 has SSE, but Intel has code in their compiler that checks to see if the processor is "genuine Intel" and calls a routine that generates a segfault if it is not. If I upgraded to Window2000 to run Bard's Tale, only to find that execution on my AthlonXP segfaults because InXile used the Intel compiler I would be majorly pissed off.
<p>
As it is, the only reason I installed it on my system is to find out if it can be run on an Athlon(XP), an issue that was not answered by the readme. I am not about to run Bard's Tale on my presumably unsupported system, risking the potential that it will crash after several days of play either because it encounters a problem with Windows98SE, or because it calls a module that segfaults because it uses an SSE routine generated by the Intel compiler.
<p>
Fortunately, disk one includes the original Bard's Tale series. It was Bard's Tale III, Thief of Fates that hooked me on Bard's Tale, until my nephew destroyed my decoder wheel. This version is cracked, so the decoder wheel is not needed. I never played Bard's Tale 1, or Bard's Tale II, so I am starting out with Bard's Tale 1, and will play through Bard's Tale III. This capability is not worth the $30+ I paid for the game, but since these legacy games lack copy protection I can at least realize the satisfaction of propagating them to my brother and nephews who also got hooked on Bard's Tale III over a decade ago.
<p>
Unfortunately, while the the documentation mentions the COMMAND SUMMARY card, I can locate no copy of this card in the documentation that comes with these games.

Tech support for the game? Maybe they can answer some questions. Meanwhile, be sure to write Amazon a nasty-gram for bad info.

And just wait a few days, I am sure someone will come out with the crack to play it on any system

It wouldn't be a crack, but rather a patch or patches.

If it is a case of they used and Intel compiler for some or all of it, it would be a case of tracking down all the tests for "genuine Intel" and replacing them with no-ops, in the case of Windows98SE, it would be a much more complicated task.

What I am really waiting for is reading posts from large numbers of players who have completed the game on an AXP. The game is supposed to be very linear, so their shouldn't be many surprises if this condition is met.

I also bought the modern Bard's tale game, along with the 3 of the original series. The new game was fun, I played it all the way through 3 times using flail, dual wield, and 2h weapons (plus all 3 also had bow). I would describe the new Bard's tale to be more like gauntlet, though.

I am now replaying the old Bard's Tale 1 game. Man is it hard! This game is not like Wiz 7, where you can easily quit and reload. If you want to quit and reload, you have to kill the program, and then restart it. Then, when you do, you don't have any money any more. Normally, it is easier to pay the $900 per level to bring back your characters from death, and $900 isn't cheap in the game.

I do love the memories in this game, though. I am currently level 9 and exploring the second level of the sewers. I remembered where the advancement guild was, just from memory, and I haven't even played this game in 15 years! The game does come with an instruction manual, and a map of skara brae. You will need to print at least the spell portion of the manual, plus the map of skara brae - 1, because you will get lost, and 2, at higher levels you are required to answer a question based on the map. Fortunately, all of that information is included with the game. I did find on a website all of the maps for the game. The maps are pretty poor, but it provides enough information for you to find your way around.

One thing that is fun and scary about the game is when you get lost. You know that death means something, and when you get lost, you can quite likely die before you figure your way. Somehow, though, I have always managed to find my way, before everyone in my party was killed.

If you liked Bard's Tale, feel free to check out my new game I am working on for B3 Software. Screens are posted at www.b3software.net

It is a lot like Bard's Tale/ Might and Magic but with more NPC interaction, a karma system, and day/night weather system. Cheers!
