I'm currently living overseas in Japan. I've been trying to run Wizardry Archives Games on my computer but haven't been able to do so. I'm using a SOTEC Desk Top with a 500 Mhz Pentium III processor, a 13GB hard drive (8.6 GB are free ),and Japanese Windows XP. I think my video card is a Voodoo3 (VRAM 16MB) but I'm not sure. I'm not sure about the sound card but I've been able to run other games such as Age of Empires, and Myst so I don't think that's a problem. Also, I used the Wizardry software in the U.S. on my brother's computer after I bought it and it worked fine. Here's some of the problems I'm having.

(1) First of all, I tried to register my game online but was unable to do so. I followed the instructions given but nothing seemed to happen. I can get to the final menu but when I check submit nothing happens.


(2) This is the main problem I'm having. Like I said when I played the game last year on my brother's computer everything ( the sound , speed, etc...) worked fine. But, now on my computer I can't get it to run. I insert the CD and wait for it to boot up. But, when the installation menu appears it doesn't fully open up so I can only see a shrunken version of it (about 2/3 of the menu only appears). I've tried to expand it out but that doesn't work. Anyway, I click on the Wizardry 6 part, install the program and wait. The program seems to install but I can't get the game to start. So, I tried starting it via the Program Files. I open the programs file, open the Wizardry folder, open the bane folder, and click on the Wizardry 6 icon (shaped like a shield). Then the game seems to run but it runs at a super fast speed. So fast, in fact, that it's almost impossible to read the prompts on the screen because they scroll too fast. So, basically it's impossible play the game properly. Also, if I try to turn the sound on then all I get is a screech and the screen freezes so the only thing I can do is close the game and try again.

So, I'm stuck. I really like to be able to play this game again. Does anybody have any advice out there?

XP is most likely your problem.
With Windows XP, Microsoft has moved completely off of the DOS foundation.
Dos is still there, but it is emulated. this means, it will have some problems (like custom display modes, sound issues)
and, XP won't allow any programs to access hardware directly, so your 3dfx Glide mode, won't give great performance.
personally, I would put Windows 98 on it, and dualboot Windows 2000 with it.
this way, Windows 98 will have little problem with Dos games, like Bane.

Thanks for the advice. I only recently installed Windows XP but when I bought the game a few years ago I was using Japanese Windows 98 SE. I bought the game back home in the US and used it on my brother's computer ( English Windows 98 ) so I thought everything would be OK. I had no problems there but when I tried it here it just wouldn't work. I contacted Sir Tech ( Interplay ) directly and they were nice but they could help me at all. They seem to think it was a Japanese-English problem. But, I've used other English software games without any problems at all so I have no idea why Wizardry wouldn't work.

I've read something about a program called Moslo that slows down the CPU speed. I figured I'd give it a shot so I downloaded but I couldn't get it to load. Do you know if there's a Windows XP version of Moslo?

Moslo will get this game running, since you can at least run it.

put moslo in the bane folder, and make a shortcut to DS.exe, and change the target line, like so:
moslo /15 ds.exe
not the DS.BAT file, though you could add it into the DS.bat file, and it should work fine.

Dargon2K,

Thanks for the quick response. Actually, I'm really not that savy with computers so you kind of lost me. So, my simplistic mind should try and follow these steps.

(1) Install Wizardry 6 into the computer. I believe the Wizardry files end up in the Windows folder.

(2) Go to the moslo homepage and down load moslo. Agter it's unzipped it show up in the C drive in the Moslo Folder.

Now, I'm lost. There are 4 files in the Moslo folder. Do I copy the entire Moslo folder into Wizardry 6 or just the program?

Then I make a shortcut DS.exe? Again I'm lost.

Also, I have no idea what a "target line " is?

Sorry, for being an imbecile. But, I really appreciate the help so far.

there are 4 files included in moslo.zip
Moslo.com
Moslo123.wri
Moslo123.txt
Readme.txt

since the latter 3 are merely documents meant for your viewing, the only one you need, is Moslo.com, the program file.
copy this into the bane folder.
then, right click bane.exe (or the appropriate name for Bane executable) and select "create shortcut"
right click the new shortcut, and select properties
in the "target" line, it will say something like this:
"bane.exe"
add Moslo /15 to it:
"moslo /15 bane.exe"
then click OK
double click the newly modified shortcut, to start playing bane.
do let us know if you get mouse and/or sound in it (Whether XP will allow it on your computer, I can't tell)

Well, it seems I'm going to need a little heaveny intervention as well as luck.

I loaded Wizardry 6 again and opened the Bane folder. There's lots of sound files and other stuff but as far as I can tell these are the only exe files.

C:\BANE\MOSLOWIZ.COM

C:\BANE (looks like a screen with a gear in it)

C:\PLAYBANE (looks like a screen with a gear in it)

C:\BANE\WROOT.EXE (looks like a shield that's already been short-cutted)

C:\BANE\WINSTALL.EXE (looks like a blank screen)

C:\BANE\WROOT.EXE ( looks like a blank screen)

I tried shortcutting all of them and doing what you suggested but got nowhere. When I shortcut BANE and PLAYBANE I get a .BAT file. When I short cut the shield I get a WROOT.EXE file.
I do not which ise the right exe file to do the moslo / 15 in it.

And should I type a space between moslo and / and once again between / and 15 and between 15 and Bane.

Completely lost but thanks again.

try the Winstall.exe, and the moslowiz.com files, just to see what happens.
and, it is:
moslo.com{space}/15{space}bane.exe
sometimes, it seems that won't regester with windows, i.e. it says "huh?"
to fix:
c:\bane\moslo.com{space}/15{space}c:\bane\bane.exe

Sorry, but still no go. I think I'm just going to end up sending you a round-trip ticket to here to see if you can straighten this @$#%&!* thing out. But seriously, this is a drag because I really liked that game.

Here's what I tried.

1. Load Bane

2. Open the Bane folder and right click on WINSTALL

3. Create a short-cut.

4. Right click on the MS-DOS Icon (short-cut)

5. Cick on properties

6. Click on program. The command line reads c:\WINSTALL.EXE

7. In the command line I type
c:\bane\moslo.com /15 c:\bane\bane.exe

8. Hit the adjust? ( don't know the English name ) button

9. Hit OK

10. Double Click the MS-dos Icon.

and I get an error message.

Before I seemed to be able to at least open the game. But, now I can't even get it to do that.

Thanks for all the advice the advice so far, but I still can't get the game running. Does anybody have a final trick or two that they think might work?

Also, is there a freeware of Moslo that wil work with Windows XP?

Personally, I think the best solution is to get an old 486 system. It's the best way to get older games to run.

I was hoping to find a solution without getting a new computer. I really want to be able to play Wiz 6 but I don't think I'm reading to go that far. Also, I don't know enough about computers to do a dual boot. In fact, I'm not sure that's even possible with my set up. Thanks for all the advice. If you think of anything else let me know.

This Dosbox program seams to work great for me. To book I installed Bane strait to the desktop and to play I drag it's folder over to bosbox and it automaticly grabs it as the c drive. type playbane and I'm off. <grin>

I finally got it running using dosbox. everyhitng is fine except there is no sound. But, I can live with that.
