First thing to be aware of, is that I can only think of a few games that aren't MMORPG (or whatever the anagram is), but are multiplayer, in the first place. NWN I know about, and I think one or the other of Ice Wind Dales? Two others I know of are strategy titles, Starcraft and Warcraft.

What else is there? Is KOTOR, and KOTOR II/PC a multiplayer pair? (I'm slightly less interested in shooters than I am in having a root canal procedure -- I know that bunches of those twitch-fests are multiplayer games . . )

1. "I wish there was a multiplayer Wizardry"
I think Diablo should fit the bill here... when I first played that game I was shocked at how shallow it was compared to Wizardry, but once you accept it's no Wizardry, it's quite nice to play, even 10 years after its release.

Other classics I can recommend are TetriNET and FreeCiv, they aren't rpgs, though.

Wizardry was also a personal favorite, but it was not among those that I replayed over and over, such as M&M 6/7.

In the long period of time after I posted my query, I came up with a list of "mostly other than shooter" LAN-playable games:

RT RPG -------- BG-II
Combat Sim* --- Crimson Skies* (Middle Aged -- I do have two now)
RT Adventure -- Diablo-II
SF RTS -------- Homeworld II (Middle Aged)
RPG ----------- KOTOR-I*
RT RPG -------- IWD-II*
SF RTS -------- Mech Commander II*
SF RTS -------- Nexus: Jupiter Incident (Brand New)
RPG* ---------- NWN* (Second copy pricing is holding up strongly)
(Adult) RPG --- Planescape: Torment* (Old)
Adventure/RPG - Sacred (Fairly New)
SF RTS -------- Starcraft*
RT RPG/Shooter - System Shock II (REALLY Old, Horror)
RTS ----------- Warcraft III

I'm gifting a grandchild with a PC that I am assembling myself; his mother and my son parted on terrible terms and she punishes her kid for that by limiting his access to his only living grandparent. But for regular after school day care, she has him over at a mutual friend's house, so that's where his PC will go. I wanted something we could both play. That's why the "Adult" themes in Planescape: Torment are a no-go.

Nice list, though I haven't played most of these (too new, hehe). What's the meaning of the asterisks in your list?

I'm not quite sure why you'd classify Planescape: Torment as an adult game.

Another fun little game to play together (on one computer) is Frozen Bubble, it's quite simplistic, but very entertaining for a while. Oh, and Bomberman, which is just like Dyna Blasters, great game.

For LAN and Internet games, I can also recommend Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, which is in many ways similar to FreeCiv, but has a new atmosphere (literally) and looks a bit more modernish and fancy.

The grandkid is eleven. My ex-daughter-in-law is about that same age, emotionally and educationally. For the sake of reduced crap from her, blood is OK, with swords - guns mostly are not-OK (most shooter type games, which is just fine with me), naked breasts are not-OK, just examples of what I would try to avoid, etc. etc.

The asterisks on the left column are my own judgement of two that I think may pass muster, and be of some interest both to the kid and to me. I have played NWN over again somewhat, and expect I can do so again and remain interested; I haven't played Crimson Skies "much", but I suspect I can handle it well enough.

In my right column, I've had those games (WITH astericks), and still have at least one copy on hand -- not necessarily that I've ended up liking and finishing all the games that I've talked myself into buying, of course. I've never been serious about Strategy gaming - never finished one yet. That means I'd overlooked Alpha Centauri up to now, so thanks!

Woah, must have missed the naked breasts and gunfights in Planescape: Torment... hehe, but maybe eleven year olds couldn't appreciate the plot just yet...

Well, Planescape DOES have some macabre, necromantic type stuff going on, prostitutes, etc.. I myself don't have problems with ANY content(devoid of context I mean. I am all for XXX rated adult stuff, no matter how silly but if a child were thrown into the middle of an orgy scene I would not approve.) but many people have different beliefs(religious persuasions etc.) and to them the stuff in PS:T may well be objectionable or not fit for their children.

As for lists of multiplayer/LAN games you adn the grandkid might enjoy...I would probably have an easier time coming up with titles you will probably want to avoid(most in my personal library I think) but I will add afew suggestions here anyway:

Worms II/III(a.k.a. Worms: Armageddon)- The Worms games are turn-based(with time limits. I.e. 45 or 60 seconds to take your action depending on how you set up the match) game of cartoony mayhem. You and an opponent take your teams of 1-8 worms and do battle using an assortment of hillarious weapons such as 'Banana bombs', 'exploding sheep, 'ninja ropes' etc..
Some of the weapons themselves are so deep and versitile that mastering them earns you deep respect in the online Worms community. The "ninja rope" for example is such a versatile and fun weapon that many enjoy setting up "roper amtches" where usage of this weapon is unlimited(most weapons, at the default settings have a limited number of uses per match).

There is no greater feeling on earth than coming up with a brilliant use of some weapon that enables you to kill off multiple enemy worms with a single shot/turn!

Worms is a lot like the old "Scorched Earth" games where you and your opponent are on opposite sides of a side-viewed map with various hills and valleys creating unique obstructions/shelters but it is one thousand time more fun and replayable. Worms: Armageddon is probably the best non-"massive" multipler game I have ever played, whether playing in hotseat or online.

Freedom Force - This game is a few years old but it is a great tribute to Jack Kirby-era, silver age comic book superheroes. It allows for online & LAN play, contains no raunch or sexual explicity, profanity or even blood(that I can remember). Just like those comic books of 40-50 years ago. It is a real-time game(with "pause and issue orders" feature ala Baldur's Gate) wherein you create a constantly expanding group of superheroes through a campaign against supervillains out to destry Patriot City.
Very nice character generation & developement system allows you to create and develope your own heroes with an impressive array of customizable powers and abilities. Various mods exist that further expand what you can do with the game.
