"strange race/class combos"
LAST EDITED ON Jul-19-12 AT 03:51 AM (Pacific)

hey ya'll,
so i am wondering what are some of the more difficult race/class combos to play? i enjoy trying to make the ugly ducklings into swans, plus i cant stand the idea of only using a fairy as a ninja /thief/bard all the time.
i found after several years that i was cookie cutting out my characters and not really 'exploring' possibilities.
so.... give me some good combos to play as i get ready to start a new one.
thanks,
david

Well, strange puts humans right out of the question, right?

So, how about this (using this site, to see what are the hardest pointwise combinations: http://www.the-spoiler.com/RPG/Sir-Tech/wizardry.7.1.html)

Elf - Psionic
Dwarf - Samurai
Lizardman - Bishop
Mook - Monk (it's just too fun to say)
Dracon - Lord
Hobbit - Ninja

If you wanted a different experience altogether, you might consider depriving yourself of one or more of the magic spellbooks. I found running a party without a Psionic spellcaster to be difficult; no Psionic Fires made large group fights annoying.

You could theoretically do this. You'd have to carry loads of potions and scrolls, as well as know where all the fountains are. At the barest of essentials, you would need heal wounds, cure disease and cure stone potions, since all other status effects can be restored over time (I'd strongly recommend taking stamina, cure poison, cure paralysis and resurrect potions all the same). You could also save scum like crazy, if you don't want to carry around all that bulk, though I wouldn't recommend it.

I wouldn't recommend playing without any spellcasters whatsoever, really, but you could *theoretically* do it. If you do go this route, however, expect this to be the single most frustrating playthrough you've ever done. It's certainly the most frustrating idea I've heard for Dark Savant (I'm assuming you wouldn't bother class changing, though all you'd have to work with is fighter and thief).

Well, it wouldn't have to be that vanilla ... you could still use other, otherwise useful classes, but just don't use their magical ability. For instance, you could use a Monk, like a hands and feet only Monk, or a Samurai that is just a superb swordsman ...

Of couse, going this route is hardly keeping in the spirit of the post, of "strange"

i wouldn't have thought that a hobbit ninja would be that impractical. aint they designed to be a thief type character anyway? i used to play wizardry five, and in that game having a hobbit was the best way to get a ninja, imho.

i bet a fairy fighter would be a helluva a trick to pull off. yes they're fast, but boy are they weak.

on the no spellcaster thing. it was more of a tongue in cheek comment about no spellcasters. but a frustrating game can be a satisfying game in the end, .....sometimes.

i just find myself playing the same types of characters over and over again, and they designed in all these possibilities to the game, why not explore them?

try to take a team and try to play where nobody dies once...no restarts!. this means not jumping into battles early. a team of 5 monks and 1 ninja would be the best start.....on expert of course.

I have done it when only playing as one character with all 14 classes. Not quite with 6 at once. Got as far as hall of the past but a prismic missle got me.
I play at work when it is slow and have been doing for 20 years. Even have a kolidra tattoo on my left shoulder (which is also my user name on the chess site of GAMEKNOT)CODS is still my overall favorite game.

My favorite for fun is Farie munk (2), Dracon ninja, Felp. Samurai, Dwarf Valkrie, and Dracon bard. Everyone with critical ability is a must. Make sure you get the 2 canes of corpus also.

Really, as far as interesting party adventures, I did the exact opposite of the only fighter scenario. Only 1 of each of the 4 base spellcasters. Got to be pretty ridiculous against most packs once the priest got to Death Wish, but several fights along the way turned out to be quite challenging with your best fighter in quilted leggings with a staff and a pope hat.

Faerie Lord can be a fun one. Puts on some hefty limitations.

Another option to liven up a start can be single-rolling your party. Pick your 6 races. You get 1 roll per character. Go with what you get.
