"open source wizardry 7 clone with wizardry 8 style graphics"
Hi all,

long time no post, but I came across this open source gem:
it's written in JAVA and you need an OpenGL capable graphics card (anything vaguely recent should do).

http://www.javacrpg.sourceforge.net

They describe it as a Wizardry 7 clone, but the graphics are like Wizardry 8!

Enjoy!

... I downloaded it last night (took quite a while) but haven't opened it yet.

I see it is using JMonkey for 3D ... I looked at using that as well ... it all looked great, except for the part about making your own models ... I can't wrap my head around that (or no one has created an easy enough tool for me yet

Seems like they have some interesting ideas ...

Finally cracked it open ... the interface is a little odd, in whta keys you have to use to navigate through the opening menus. Not sur if it was just the fact that it was Java or my laptop was not up to the challenge, but it ran really slow.

I can't even run it at the moment, my windows box doesn't have an OpenGL capable graphics card/driver in it :-/

Unless you got a hot & heavy laptop (a "desktop replacement" one), your OpenGL performance won't be great. Also, check you've got the latest JAVA on your machine, but all windows JAVA is slow anyhow... I think Mickeysoft is still bearing a grudge: JAVA on OpenBSD - of all things - flies in comparison! (OpenBSD is not focussed on being a user platform, but saying that, things are moving fast so I'm off to check OpenGL status now )

For the rest of you lot, this Wiz clone is a great reason to try out PCBSD or Ubuntu

Downloaded, started to play, played for 5 minutes, no problems encountered except that I have to get used to those keyboard controls! I'm sure I'll learn fast enough!

    No speed problems nor crashes.

Does your graphics card and its driver support OpenGL?

it supports opengl just fine, i am able to play wiz 8. i tried following the trouble shooting guide provided, but honestly its all greek to me. i set all of the settings to the bare minimum and it still closes out the program at the generating world screen. i really appreciate all your help.

I downloaded it and it ran fine on my Windows 7 64-bit machine. I have yet to figure out character creation, but I did not have much time last night. I'll look a bit closer in the next few days. I did have to change the java command in the bat file to a complete string to the 32 bit java program
This is where is usually resides on a 64-bit machine

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe"
