"Why Cursed?"
LAST EDITED ON Nov-11-08 AT 11:14 AM (Pacific)

I've been reading some old threads here... and even tho I'm well past the Land of Dreams, something is bugging me. Why were all those cool items cursed??? Ok, I don't expect a direct answer of course... but damn... I was SO disappointed to see that every item was cursed! I thought there was something wrong with my game... I chose the sword as I wanted Str for my tanks, and then promptly sold the sword, my thinking was, no way I'm going to use a cursed item for the remainder of the game.

It looks like everyone keeps these items and uses them despite them being cursed?!

Why oh why... LOL there's crap enough selection for weapons in CODS, they HAD to make the best stuff cursed?

Yes, I chose the Sword as well and my Valkyrie is still using it many hours after Munkharama. I had happened to read about the cursed items in a walkthrough before I got to the Land of Dreams so I was prepared for it (and thus didn't get disappointed by the cursed status of the items), but if I hadn't read about it I probably would have reacted the exact same way as you did and sold off the stuff immediately...

I've got all my walkthroughs now LOL normally I don't need them, and only will use them if I get stuck.

...CODS is *making* me cheat!

(As any great RPG should be) ... Do you want to take the advantages of a given weapon or item, or do you prefer the flexibility of being able to swap at any time?

And removing the curse is not impossible, it is easy to do with a scroll.

True, but I guess the real issue here is a question of expectations. In many RPGs any cursed item is simply bad, period, so it's not surprising if some players get the impression that they've been given a raw deal by the Spirit of Life (indeed, the generally unforgiving - though never unfair - nature of Wizardry 7's gameplay is certainly consistent with this hypothesis).

Still, the best lesson to learn from this is probably to have an open mind while playing W7 and not to draw any hasty conclusions...

yes, exactly Demiath. A cursed status in most RPGs means quite a bit more than just having the item glued to your hand.

I decided I was done playing the game so virtuously right after all these cursed items. I was quite surprised to see the threads here talking about the best weapons in the game being the ones I just passed up! LOL oh well... my party is an imported party, and they're doing really well. So fortunately, I don't feel too bad about passing them up.

Ok, now I understand. Playing the best old school RPG took so much of my time that I don't know much about other games...

I know what you mean emerald. I think Wizardry is about the best old school rpg too. The graphical version of Moria was a lot of fun, and that's an oldie! I also thought the Eye of the Beholder (1&2) series is one of the best too... if you haven't played that one, you need too!

and of course Baldur's Gate 2... I think it was a highpoint in that series.
