"NPC lootable chests"
I ran into a few of these, empty, but I have since restarted(because I messed up my characters a bit).

Are they only time-triggered, or can a chest be npc looted due to some other trigger, I think I read somewhere that some get looted if you visit a certain area...

If so, how do I avoid getting the early ones looted?

I remember going through everything in new city and getting the legend map down under the monastery, but then one chest in old city was looted, and another in orkogre castle.

The NPC's wander around and loot the chests. You can kill them (which upsets their friends) or get friendly with them (works on the DOS version but not the Windows version) or grab the Legend map as soon as possible, or hope that whoever stole the legend map trades it to someone you can kill without consequences.

If it gets into Barlone's hands, it might get locked behind a gate that sometimes you cannot open. Editing is necessary at that point.

You mustn't rest. I may have written this somewhere, but this is the only silly thing in the best ever RPG: You must not rest, if you want to find the chests intact. You may walk from the other end of the world to a fountain to replenish the party's stats, and it will take much less (game) time than it takes to rest spellpower and stamina bars full again.

It is not so bad. The game has a "so called" time checks built in. If you are fast enough you can grab all the maps first. You can rest but dont hesitate anywhere.
The time checks work in both shops (Paluke and Arms of Argus). As the time goes the items you may buy there are different.

I may have gone from one extreme to the another. But surely there is no way of knowing how much time you can spend resting?

5. "8 hours"
I may be wrong, but I believe each uninterrupted resting session in all three chapters (Bane, CODS & W8) is 8 hours. I believe Mad God's Cosmic Forge allows you to see the elapsed time, so you can check this for yourself: save a game; rest (make sure the rest period is not interrupted with a random encounter); save the rested game under a different name; then view the elapsed time on both games.

For comparison, each "move" or "turn" in the game is 1 minute. (I've verified that in Bane; I cannot atm recall whether I've also verified it in CODS, but I doubt Sir-Tech bothered to change it.) Thus, you can move 480 squares in the time you would otherwise rest. Hence the comment that it is "faster" (in game terms) to walk across the world to a mana fountain than it is to rest for regenerating spell points.

I think rest has always been 8 hours. The problem was, I think I recall, that one resting period replenished only some of the spellpoints, which were always sorely needed. (I guess nobody has calculated that, although Mad God has changed it) And that made walking a better although very tedious solution.

7. "RE: 8 hours"
I have not studied mana regeneration in CODS (at least, not nearly as much as I have in Bane), but in Bane, each character slot regenerated once per hour (60 moves/turns/clicks). I.e., if you had a divine regeneration rate of 4, then once per hour, you would regenerate 1-4 points of divine mana. (I don't recall, atm, if "0" was also a possible regeneration result.)

However, each character slot (again, this is Bane I'm discussing) does not regenerate at the same time!

For example, slot 1 regenerates at 0:05; slot 2 at 0:15; slot 3 at 0:25; etc. Thus, with obsessive-compulsive micro-managing, your main spell caster can be shifted through the different slots just as they reach their regeneration point, with the result that one character regenerates mana six times faster than normal. (At the price of other characters not regenerating at all; or two characters can regenerate three times as fast; etc.)

Of course, you can't do this sort of micro-managing in your sleep, or while your characters are sleeping. ;)

Anyway, the real bottom line: resting is the worst possible way to regenerate mana in the game.
