"Questions (Miss Chance, Passage of Time, Etc.)"
Hey there. Been wanting to play the game again after a long hiatus. Just a few quick questions:

#1. I know that mana regeneration is determined by your starting class (and race and PIE/VIT). But someone also mentioned an issue with miss chance and how class switching can screw you over on that. I didn't quite understand how that worked so could someone explain the miss chance factor? Does it only go down after your first 20 levels? Or can each of your characters eventually get it down to 0 (including pure spell casters after reaching like Level 30 or 40+).

#2. Apparantly resting occurs in 8 one-hour increments (so if you rest fully that takes 8 hours). Does anyone know how much time it takes to "take a single step" or to make a turn (which counts as taking a step). I was just wondering if there are cases where in terms of game time, it might be better off to just rest rather than running back to a fountain.

#3. For some reason, I faintly recall finding a Locate Person scroll early in the game (either in New City or in one of the beginning dungeons). It's been over a decade since I last played, so could someone refresh me on where the early game Locate Person scroll is?

#4. I always hated it when the NPC killed each other. I had one game where Brother Tshober ran about slaughtering everyone (including the T'Rang and Dane NPCs. Tshober even took out the Magna Dane!). Are there any strategies to help minimize this to keep everyone alive (especially poor Mick!)? Some threads have mentioned that NPC's stop fighting each other once you have a certain number of maps. Anyone know what the threshold number is?

#5. In addition to the Legend Map, I know that some early chests are the Crusaders chest and the Giant Cave chest. Are there any early chests that I have to be careful with (because they can yield really great items)? I know that there is a nice chest in the Tower of Dane. I *thought* there was also a chance of getting a Pandora Wand in Munkharama (where the Lord of Dark Forest is) - can anyone confirm? Any other chests I should be aware of?

Thanks!

A few quick answers:

0. Download and install Madgod's Cosmic Forge. It will give you the conclusive answer of what items may occur and where. I'm sorry I don't have an immediate link for you, but search the site and you'll find one.

1. I must defer this one to someone else.

2. At least in Bane (Wiz6), each step, turn, or other carriage return while one is not in combat or viewing the character screens is 1 minute, so it is almost always faster to walk back to a fountain than to rest for 480 minutes/key strokes. My characters never sleep.

3. This is a perfect example of a Cosmic Forge question: I boot up the ol' Forge, click on "Item List," page down to "Locate Person," double-click to pull up the item editor screen for this item, and down in the lower right is a list of all of the treasures in which this item occurs. You are probably thinking of its occurence in a chest in Old City: "loot entry" 31, where it is a guaranteed item.

4. No idea. (On the other hand, I've never heard of T'shober defeating ANYONE, and I don't think Magna Dane is even available as an NPC encounter (as opposed to the T'rang Queen and the Gorn King, both of whom can be killed in their original (or only - for the Queen) locations. My own personal strategy for minimizing deaths is to delay, as long as reasonably possible, the release of npcs that don't start out roaming: T'shober, Shritis, Rodan, etc.

5. What is "good" depends on your party's make up, to some extent. Items in the Crusaders Chest are all set, so don't worry about that. The Giant Cave Chest has a selection of items, so it is worth saving and reloading. In my personal "shopping list," I save and reload to get a Spear+2 from Capt. Boerigard (not for CODS, but for importing to W8: this is easily one of the best - or the best - importable weapon), an Amulet of Airs from the Old City Key Chest, a Stave of Silence in Orkogre Castle, Silver Gloves or Sollerets beneath Nyctalinth, a haunting stick in the Witch's Cave, a Faerie Cap or Chaimail +2 from the Chrome Key Chest and the Deadly Coffers Chest, and a Mana Stone from the Book of Immortals Chest, among other things. (I have a very long shopping list.) Pandoras Wand IS available in the underground temple in Munkharama: it's a possible treasure in the chest with the Key of Good Keep.

I hope that was helpful.

1) Switching classes has no negative effect at all on hit-chance. As a matter of fact, in my own experiements, it always improved it because when you reached a max level you were previously, you got a bonus (so being a thief/bard as a faerie, always changing at 2nd level, made for a really fat hit-chance bonus)

2) This was the most irritating thing in the the greatest RPG of the 90's: It took less time to walk from the other side of the world to a fountain and back than to get a rest. After I learned that I never missed a map and seldom heard about NPC:s killing each other. If you don't want to cheat, you'll just have to keep on clicking.

5) (Edit: Oops, you asked about chests) Encounters with the Gorn Ashigaru will give you Naginata, No-Dachi and better Samurai armor, if you are willing to reload and reload. Gorn Leaders guarding King Ulgar will drop Spear+2 eventually.
