"Mana Regen & Starting Class"
I'm still not really sure on how important mana regeneration is. When creating a new character, should I take this into account?

The reason I am asking is because I cant decide what class to make my Human - start him as a Fighter for better gear, or as a Ranger for the mana regen? I'm a new player, so what would be best? I'll be swapping between those two classes throughout the game.

Mana Regen is super important if you intend to ultimatley have the character casting spells, as there is nothing worse than resting, losing valuable game time, to regen your mana.

Use the 'game calculations' screen in the Mad God's *Cosmic Forge* to way the pros and cons of starting class bonuses.

Going to the nearest fountain is almost always faster than resting for mana, almost anywhere in the game, and there are also Mana Stones/potions/equipment. Even when the nearest fountain is in NC and you're on the road near Nyctolinth, walking back and drinking--and returning--will recover mana in less game-time than camping.

Good point, however random encounters on the way back to a fountain are a pain, and most mana regenerating items are not available until a fair way in.

why is gametime so so valuable ? is it only because of the maps or is there some other reason ?

Other than the intangible pride of making it through faster than anyone else, it is only so you can be first to the maps.

The starting equipment of a Fighter doesn't make it worth it. The only reason I'd start as a Fighter is that encumerance (I believe anyhows) is based on starting Strength, not current. Fighters can thus spend all their points on Strength and Stamina, However, for about 6 extra points I think (??) they could start out with a Ranger and the same starting stats.

I think the "encumbrance based on starting STR" feature/bug was only in Wiz 6...IIRC it goes up proportionally in Wiz 7.
