"fizzle"
Hey folks, I have multi classed characters that are maxed in skills and attributes. They each have all skills and all spells. If I have all 6 characters cast level 7 nuclear blast, word of death, mindflay, etc. in a low level fight, at least 2 are guarenteed to fizzle, with 3 being common. Whats up with that? I have played wiz 7 (cods, not gold, I'll never touch gold) off and on for years and it's always been that way. My levels are currently around 45. Is this normal?

As long as your Oratory skill is maxxed, you shouldn't fizzle much at all. I rarely see fizzles, definitely at to the extent you seem to see them. Of course, I only have 2 characters that do those mass-damage spells, so it's not the same situation entirely, but it's rare for me to see fizzles with them (I can't even recall them fizzling those spells)....

I experienced the same problem with CODS (Dosbox). I finished CODS last week with my Level 27 party (without changing classes) on Normal difficulty. Sometimes Power 5 Word of Death was fizzled!
Before this I played Gold and I don't remember so many fizzles.

My characters were also maxed attributes and skills, including Oratory. Both of my primary spellcasters were dual classed so between them, all four schools of magic were accounted for.

I rarely cast "strike all" spells above a power level of 3 or 4, because they tend to have a chance to fizzle after that. On the plus side, I am able to spread the magic cost over several people by casting supplementary strike alls.

For example, if I want to get rid of a crowd of people weak against fire, both my Samurai and my Mage will cast a lower level Nuclear Blast.

It's annoying, but I know what you're talking about. Even Gods fizzle their spells now and again...

I suspect they designed it that way, to prevent you from mass-asphyxiating everything in your path.

If you cast one high level spell per round, it rarely fizzles. If you cast two, one will fizzle.
If you cast 3, two will fizzle or backfire.

I usually cast multiple mass-attacks and spread around the spellpower drain.

Hmm, if I cast one mass damage I still get a lot of fizzles. I guess I just need to cast at lower levels.
