"very different MM experience"
Well after reading about the MMs in a number of threads I just had to try it out but what I got was nowhere near what others have recorded......

I can hit the "U" button and then an arrow key to have an MM come up. It usually displays 2 "?" with dagger icons. I drop one and then pick it up with the following results...

1 - The item will start out unknown but if I assay or identify it the item will change to something new. I will continue to change EVERY time I hit the assay button (I saw a LOT of items I had never seen before).

2 - I can put the item back in my inventory without it changing BUT if I attempt to USE/EQUIP the item (and that character CAN use it) it will randomly change to something new and equip it! This has resulted in some strange things being equipped in my primary weapon slot like letters, qarrels, etc.

3 - By picking up the equipped item and putting that item unequipped into the place where the equipped item was, it will drastically change that characters AC. By continuing to equip and or put the item back in my inventory I can keep changing the AC. I have generated numbers as low as -124 and as high as 217. They will fluctuate wildly...sometimes -63, next +7, then - 115, etc.

4 - If I attempt to equip ANOTHER mystery item over an equipped mystery item it will not only change the AC, and the item but it will also change the next closest item to something new. This has resulted in various things such as having a cursed practice target equipped in my primary weapon slot!

Has this type of thing ever been mentioned by anyone else? Obviously using MMs for me is not a wise thing.

It might also be important to note Im playing the Mac version of Wizardry Gold.

Not to worry, as advocates of the mystery menus will assure you, all of this was intended by the designers as an undocumented "feature" of the game. The particular phenomenon you are experiencing is supposed to emphasis the very essence of magic. Unlike the logical, scientific world in which we live, where you expect that performing the same acts, under the same circumstances, will produce the same results, in this magical setting, ANYTHING can happen. Even today, we are continually dazzled by the complexity of the programming in CODS, that the game designers could engineer a game where some actions - the use of MMs - could produce entirely unpredictable results.

UNDOCUMENTED TESTING FEATURE !!!

There are several keys that bring up the menus: U-uparrow, U-downarrow, U-leftarrow, U-rightarrow. I think u-lessthan and U-greaterthan may have brought up menus. Obviously the problem is your Macintosh. The game was written on a real computer then ported to the Mac. They didn't need the UNDOCUMENTED TESTING FEATURE at that point so they forgot to test the UNDOCUMENTED TESTING FEATURE.

The Mystery Menus work best with version 1.0 (when they work at all), and they appear to be tied to terrain features that are (referring to the map) 2 squares up and 3 squares left. This was discovered when someone found the Blades Of Aesir at the Crown Gate, and I found it there before I opened the gate. I couldn't find it after Murkatos Outer Sanctum gate was opened, hence the connection to terrain.

The menus produce different items depending on the direction you are facing. Some of the best results come from New City, in and around the temple.

Well, unbeliever, intelligent design is a slam dunk.

LOOK AT THE BOX. It has the names of the designers on it !!

6. "Easy"
Use an editor, nmade for that purpose. As demonstrated here, there is no "consistent" way to utilize this bug, since it works different on different systems and even on the same system, when some things change.

Sorry if this was repeated but the archives only go back so far. I thought I read all the info from this forum on MMs and didnt see anything like what I experienced.

So was what I experienced a "junk" menu or is this how all the MMs are? If the only way to make the MMs work predictably is with an editor then I guess Im SOL because all the editors are PC specific <sigh> I can live without them though

Don't worry about not finding the old threads. Some of us have been here a long, long time and there was some light hearted banter about whether the MMs were an undocumented feature or a bug. Lines were drawn and taunts issued, but no blood was shed.

To honest, I had one computer that would give me some MMs and they did to be somewhat consistant on that machine. I have not even tried for at lezst 3 or 4 year or even more. If you can get them to work on your machine then use them if you wish, what our host was trying to convey is that they are not stable and can not be documented.

10. "Editing vs. MM "
I was not saying to use an editor in conjunction with the MM ... I am saying to use an editor if you want consistent results.

Although most all editors are written for the PC, I have found that they will edit a MAC saved game file ... don't know if that helps or not.
