"NPC Battle Reports"
Hello again. I have another annoying question, which I have not seen addressed though I may have just missed it. Here it is. Often when talking with NPC's you get rumors or reports of one band fighting another at a certain locale - ex. "Capt. Boerigard is fighting Mick the Pick at Eryn River" Later I see these NPCs all hale and healthy. Do these battles mean anything? Are the NPCs really fighting each other or is this just a way to inform the party as to who hates who? By the way my current game goes on from Orkogre - still carrying the corpse around until I can get a remove curse - We've also nabbed the Dragon map, angered Brother T'shober by not wanting to go to Munkharama and are heading to Upkyr to make some bucks.

Thanks

I always thought that it added some credibility to the "living breathing" world. Something else is going on in the game that you are not in control of. This is something I found lacking in W8. I wanted to hear that Bela was fighting the Rapax on the Rift or that The Don was raising hell in Arnika somewhere. Oh well.

Also you will note that many of the NPCs will die thought the game. How did they die? Hmmmm....

They really fight each other. As Marc said, sometimes you'll hear of certain people dying (Cast the Locate Person spell if/when you get it). That's via their conflicts.

And of course they are fighting for the maps.
But have you noticed that the NPCs fight each other mostly early in game? Later they all form alliances with everyone and just start following and bothering YOU

I remember well the NPC express train that rides by in the most odd places - say witch mountains or Tramotane forest. I try to avoid by staying on the move and by not releasing key NPCs til I am good and ready. Brother T'Shober can just cool it by the Eryn river til I am ready for Munk propaganda. He really annoys me later when he is walking around drunk.

I agree with you Marc that the reports give the idea that more is going on - that combined with the idea that the maps can be taken before get there make this game much more credible than most where the villains wait for you to react. This game seems even to defy the hero/villain axis by leaving it up to you whom to associate with.

Thanks again.

Interesting enough, the NPCs can't seem to get out of the 'sacrament' dungeons in new city. I find that to avoid being annoyed, I simply lead everyone down there (just hanging out there awhile will do it usually) and then leave. You'll never see them again unless you go into that dungeon.

However, most NPCs that actually get the maps are not the ones you set free by interacting with them. The Ratkins usually get the Dane Tower map if you play slowly, and it seems random on the rest. And it also seems that anytime any Trang gets a map, Jenn Queen thing gets it instantly (hence why killing her sometimes results in finding maps, even though you just met her)

If you ever want to keep the NPC Train from following you around, drop your maps somewhere. That's what they're looking for!

If you are paranoid, drop them off at the Isle of Crypts because nobody can travel there. That's what I do with all my excess junk like the extra Coffer Keys, IUF Orders, etc...

After you do so, they'll go back to smacking each other around until you essentially have a group of "Evil" or "Good" NPCs running around. Which group you get more or less has to do with who you kill: Rodan or Shritis. Whoever is left alive will slaughter just about everyone else they get into a feud with (Note, Rodan loses to Shritis in just about every game I've played, hence the reason I hunt Shritis down and kill him the second he gets "released").

Play long enough and the Gorn tend to bite it on their own as well. With the "Good" NPCs (Gruntwrapper, Rhallick, Xen, Tshober, Jan-Ette, Ulgar and Galiere) led by Rodan running around in my game, the untrusting Gorn tended to start fights with the others, notably Rodan, with deadly results. They have always been a mistrusting lot, situated between the Dane and Munk and all...
