"Character database question"
Hello. First of all, I was recommended to this site by someone who says you can help me solve my question.

Secondly, let me just say that it is really nice to find fans of Crusaders of the Dark Savant. This was such a great game, and I almost feel "unique" because I still have the original game box, manual, and strategy guide. Most people that have this game (to my knowledge) have this game running on an emulator. But hopefully many of you still have the original game.

Anyway, our secondary comp kicked the bucket awhile ago and it wasn't until yesterday that I realized I could still use the monitor and keyboard to hook up our old old comp. Had MS DOS and windows 3.1 or whatever it was. Such nostalgia of the great games of that time. Best of all, Crusaders of the Dark Savant was running on that computer.

But I've encountered a small problem. It turns out Crusaders gave you a maximum amount of characters in the character database. It took me nearly 2 hrs to create my first 2 characters (I only take rolls of 26 and better). After that, I realized that the limit has been met. So would there be anyway to put some of the other characters on a floppy without affecting the game? I'd rather not delete becasue a) Most of our save games (which are far into the game) have those characters and I don't know what will happen if the initial characters dissappeared and b) Such fond memories.

Is there any way to get around this or will I have to resort to the dreaded deletion button?

(a) If you only take characters with a "26 or better," then your characters must all be 26s, as that is the highest possible roll, according to the code (according to our most accomplished expert, Mad God).

(b) If you want to have more than the limit of 16 characters, there is one simple solution: go into the CODS folder, copy the file pcfile.dbs (I will usually name the copy something like "pcfile.one"), then delete characters from the original pcfile.dbs to make space for generating new characters. You will then have your old characters available in pcfile.one and your new characters in pcfile.dbs. (You will need to change their extensions in order to access the old characters.) The only challenge is getting the old characters into the same party as the new characters.

Thanks very much for the solution. Was getting worried a bit.

Secondly, I could have sworn there were higher rolls than 26 but it has been awhile since I last played. That's good news then, especially since my fairy ninja got a 25 and my lord got a 26, and my samurai a 25.
