"another party optimalization question"
LAST EDITED ON Jul-18-05 AT 05:24 AM (Pacific)

Hi

After 10 years of playing CoDS i finnaly decided to complete the game this summer
Here's my party (currently on level 7, going to Orkogre Castle). The idea was that everybody will know spells, learn kirijutsu & ninjutsu, and everyone will be able to fight hth.
It goes like this:

1) Lizardman Fighter->Ninja->Fighter
Starting as fighter with stats requiment for ninja. Immediately switches to ninja, goes up 1lvl (to learn ninjutsu & kirijutsu), and returns to fighter career. I'm not sure if i should change his proffesion later (nothing interesting for a dumb killing machine). Primary HtH character. And yes, I made an exception from "all spellcasters" rule.

2) Fellpur Ninja->Lord
About 8-10 levels of ninja (switching to lord before finding the map in Orkogre). No class changes after that. Another hitter with some healing and some diplomacy maybe.

3) Fearie Alchemist->Ninja (or maybe Alchemist->Ninja<->Samurai)
For the first 8-10 levels he is only a spellcaster and then he goes ninja, grabs the Cane of Corpus and... <evil grin>

4) Rawulf (Female) Thief->Monk->Valkyrie
Skullduggery character with poor spells and some fighting abbilities. I'd like her to be valkyrie. I prefer raw steel than this all kung-fu crap ;)

5) Elf (Female) Bard->Bishop->Samurai<->Ninja (and maybe Valkyrie later)
Starts as a bard because Poet's Lute is a great help on early levels. Then becomes a bishop to improve Thaumaturgy (Theology upgraded only a little). Gets some levels in samurai and ninja classes (ignores Alchemy though). Maybe ends as a Valkirie to get some more theological spells.

6) Elf Bishop->Priest<->Mage->Samurai<->Ninja
Starts as a bishop for better equipment, but immediately changes to priest. Switches between prist nad mage for some time (New City monster generator is the key ;) to max his spellcasting abbilities. Then becomes a samurai with some levels of ninja to learn ninjutsu and improve skills. Ends as a Samurai.

So what do you think?

I think the Lizard Fighter/Ninja/Fighter is a bad idea. It's pretty assured that a Lizardman who moves to Fighter (and thus goes all minimum in everything else) will not change classes again, and a Fighter isn't really what you want at end-levels in my humble opinion.

The Felpur Ninja/Lord sounds ok, but you might consider a FemaleHobbit. If you can do a Ninja to Lord as a Hobbit, you can easily switch back a forth into Valkyrie a couple of times to get those skills up eariler... Just a thought.

Faerie Alchy Ninja is cool. Think I'd stick to Ninja though if you wanna use the Cane.

Rawulf Thief-Monk-Valk. I know it's completely different, but why not a Faerie Mage/Thief that ends up as a Ninja? You can change classes practically every other time you go up a level, 20ish class changes to everyone elses 2. And in the end, still be at the same level or better than everyone else, AND with all the skills maxxed... Just a thought, I did that and ended her (Mine was female) as a Ninja, she had my Cane.

I'd stop #5 as a Ninja personally.

6 is a bad idea. You get a MUCH lower mana regen rate if you start as a Bishop. You should start as a mage and forget Bishop entirely. The rest is a good idea though, though the monster generator in the Gorn Castle is better I think....

2. "Optimize your arena"
New City is better because you can go to the fountain, AND practise Swimming, too...

Thanks for your comment

Lizardman Fighter
Is it worth to make lizardman something more than hth killing machine? I mean his Int and Pie are poor and his mana regen is the slowest. I was thinking maybe to switch him to Ranger later (it CAN be done ;) ) but I thought it would be useless. The lizardman fighter gets max hit points and serves as party's 'battering ram'. In fact I never had a high-level fighter in my party (in fact i never had a lizard in my party)before. Would a diffrent race fighter that changes profesion later be more effective?

Female Hobbit
It sounds effective but... a hobbit lady as a main hth character? I'll stay with the cat.

Fearie Mage/Thief->Ninja
That sounds great! I haven't thought about this combination. Got to try it right away This would also give this character very fast mana regen. I think I can live with little carring capacity of 2-fearies party.

Elf (Female) Bard->Bishop->Samurai<->Ninja->Valkirie
I know the ninjas are effective but I like the idea of tough female fighter ruthlessly charging the enemy so I try to have some valkyries in my party.

Elf Bishop
I see bishop is a poor choice. But does a priest have slower mana regen than mage? Priest would be more usefull in hth (that's not a problem since he can change his profession often) and starts with better equipment ('long range' staff). I'm also thinking to give this character a level of thief early to learn ninjutsu.

Edit:
@otter
I also prefer to train in New City because it's close to the fountain, the 'swimming pool' and the shops (usefull when changing professions).

Personally, maybe this will help, I found the following 5 combos to work best (still having trouble deciding what would be best for the 6th character).

Faery Mage/Thief/Bard. Fastest multi-classing in the game. Nuclear Blast before New City is completed sometimes. Usually ends as a Ninja, depending on stats. Starts as a Ranger for certain skills.

Elven Mage/Priest. Very fast multi-classing and mana in the high hundreds for EVERY school early in the game, as well as the largest selection of spells. I usually end him as a Bishop just for theme....

Faery Lord/Ninja. Switching between classes here is almost as easy as the Elven Priest/Mage. Ends as Ninja.

Rawulf Ninja/Samurai. Again, great for switching classes (something I do alot until I get into the Gorn Castle).

Female Hobbit Lord/Valkyrie. Usually my leader, and gets Word of Death quickly in game. Primary healer of the group, and tends to go for the Ebony/Mantis/LightSword to make up for no Ninjitsu.

Since I build primarily multi-switchers, still having trouble with the 6th character. Tried a Human Ranger/Alchemist last time, but that was still kinda tough on quick-changes... (+5 Int isn't easy) The 3 warrior slots are filled, the primary magic is filled, as is the Trap/Locks slot with a great secondary magic. The only thing I'm missing really is a powerful silenced caster (Alchemist type) or a Psi of any kind (though I'm not sure that's even desired).

Your #6 can be Fairy Ranger/Ninja (or a Fellpur if you don't like 3rd Fairy) maybe starting as an Alchemist. Personally I don't use Psi characters - those classes are to expensive and I can live without their few new spells.

I'll try this party:

Hobbit Female Ninja->Valkyrie<->Lord
Even if it sound silly. 'Aunt Mary don't be so nervous. Aunt Mary what do you need this 2H Crusader's Axe for?' If I can't roll a Hobbit Ninja she'll start as a Valkyrie. Ends as a Valkyrie.

Rawulf Ninja<->Samurai
Still haven't decided what will be his starting class. Ends as Samurai.

Fearie Alchemist->Ninja (and a few levels of Samurai or Lord for skill points)
Ends as a Ninja.

Fearie Mage<->Thief->Ninja (he also could use some Samurai or Lord practise)
Ends as a Ninja.

Elf Female Bard->Bishop(or maybe a few levels of Mage<->Priest instead)->Ninja->Valkyrie

Elf Mage<->Priest(with one level of Thief early to learn ninjutsu)->Samurai<->Ninja
Ends as Samurai.

So somewhere in Orkogre Castle I'll find my party to be Two Valkyries, two Ninjas and two Samurais. All of them will know ninjutsu & kirijutsu. All of them will be healers. Five of them will be powerful spellcasters (two with two spellbooks). They will still be able switch classes to max Personal skills.

Trying a Human Ranger/Fighter/Thief now (Primary objective is Ranger, only a Fighter/Thief long enough to become Ranger again a few times to max Alchemy quickly).

All concepts are to change classes as often/fast as possible for quick maxxing of skills before finishing New City. The slowest being the Valkyrie/Lord Hobbit, but still doable in at or under 5 levels on average.

7. "Finished :)"
Man I finished the game. After 10 years of playing I finally found Phoonzang's precious globe and left Guardia.
Still haven't kicked 1000-eyed-plant's ass through

About my party?
Hobbit Valkyrie/Lord is not that good. It's too hard to change a Val into Lord.

Alch->Ninja has only one spellbook and that wasn't enough for me.

Samurai/Ninja served me well but I made a supid mistake ending him as a Samurai and not giving him a Heal Wounds spell :/

Fearie Thief/Mage rules

Bard wasn't neccesery because I switched her to another class early.

Elf Mage/Priest was of course very powerful, but it was worth to give him a level of thief early (after all it was all-ninjutsu-party)

I must say that 13 years after it's release CoDS is still a wonderfully playable game.
