"False start"
I had an interesting idea for a party and started up a game with 3 valkyries (dwarf, Dracon and Rawulf) and a Ninja (Rawulf), Samurai (dracon) and Monk (dwarf - apprentice). The idea was to have the Valkyries as kind of guardian angels.

1) They can eventually cast guardian angel on a one for one basis (i.e. the Rawulf valkyrie is responsible for the life of the rawulf Ninja, etc.)
2) When their charge is hurting, they can "protect" and even if they get down on hit points, odds are they will cheat death instead of dying.

I got to Gregor and kept losing at least one party member, so I am rethinking my line up. I may restart with a Psionic, Mage and Alchemist, then eventually switch them over to the hybrid classes. After losing last night, I got this idea of 3 valkries in the front row, spears levelled at Gregor, with the 3 spellcasters they are bound to protect behind them, lobbing spells ...

The only real problem race is the dwarf, since they don't make good Psionic types ... I may pick another race (Human) and roll up another valkyrie as well.

Further updates as news warrants ...

1. "And they are out of the gate ...."
(... or Monastery, and onto Arnika Road, enjoying the sights and venomous crab meat )

Restarted with Humans in lieu of Dwarves, and pure casters in lieu of hybrids ... much better game. Gregor has still proven to be the toughest battle (Arnika Road is a cake walk at level 5/6).

Spell the major factor in my enojoyment of this party. I have ran fighter heacvy parties before adn really liked it, but the down side to my false start party was no spells at all (until level 5, which I never got to).

And I am picking and using my spells differently this game, which is why things are going so well, I think. I tend to be all offense, with little thought to defense, until I have to reload forur or five times on one battle. And I thought, given my style, this would be a weak party, but not so.

I hardly even attack the first round. My usual tactic is:
Alchemist: Noxious Fumes
Mage: Freeze Flesh
Psionic: Hypnotic Lure
2 Valkyries: Bless (level 1, still learning)
1 Valkyrie: Attack

That usually sets me up for round two with my "pick of the litter" as to who I want to attack first.

Round two usually looks something like this:

Alchemist: Whipping Rocks
Mage: Fireball
Psionic: Shrill Sound (or Sleep)
3 Valkyries: Attack

I had always thought of Alchemists as more healer types, especially early on and this one has cast his share of Heal Wounds. But he is holding his own, with 22 kills (party average is about 20). Of course, the Mage is blowing the bell curve, now that he has learned his precious Fireball, with 40 .

And now, back to the game ...

2. "A few suggestions (bot that you need them :) )...."
Have your Alchemist and mgee buy or somehow acquire the knock-knock spell at the same time and your psi the devine trap spell. This way you can take them into the Vault and train up theit wizardry and alchemy skills at the same time Once you've maxed your skills make your switch. After battle use your valks as healers to train up their Div skills

3. "Thanks"
I have been training the valkyries both during and after combat. I try to start battle with opponents far enough away, that the valkyies can cast Guardian Angel on their charges, and maybe get off a Bless, before cobat really begins. This also gives the spellcasters a chance to get off their spells to Paralyze, distract and otherwise incapacitate the enemies.

After battle, everyone pretty much heals themselves, with the exception of the mage.

I do some "training" in battle, in that when I am down to one opponent, I usually cast all the buff and paralyze spells I can (without killing the opponent). I don't really care for training on the bank vault and such.

4. "What a party!"
LAST EDITED ON Aug-21-03 AT 10:11 PM (Pacific)

Ran over and picked up Saxx and Sparkle (hi guys!! yippee!!). Then off to get some 100% Trang material, via Arnika and the Swamp. Stopped off and did the rat patrol thing (took out the breeders the first try ... that was a first and at level 9/10).

I have never been one to play the defensive side of things ... I go in hitting hard and if I can't take 'em down, I come back with more fire power. This time I setup a hypnotic lure before intiating battle, then started combat, then opend the door, to get that free round of surprise "attacks". It was more like a free round of buffs, with an Acid Bomb, Freeze Flesh and Siren's Wail to boot.

By the second round, throwing in little pandemonium powder, half my party was Guardian Angel'ed, and all of the opponents were afflicted by at least one if not two or three maladies (Paralyzed, Insane, Nauseas, Afraid) ... not to mention staring at the lure. As luck would have it, the breeder closest to the door was insane (and mobile) and usually whacking on the other breeder or the archers behind her.

Once both breeders were in the line of fire, through my angled shot in the door, I started letting loose with cone spells (Ego Whip, Magic Missiles, Whipping Rocks, Shrill Sound, Psionic Fire) along with the area spells (Fire Bomb, Fireball, Noxious Fumes) I was letting off inside the doorway.

It was all over rather quickly (maybe 10 rounds?), with only a scratch here and there. Then, stepped in the door and combat re-initiated with what was left of the archers (2 of them with about 20 HP between them).

Milano Calzone was a breeze, so I foolishly thought I might try on the Don ... what the heck, I had a Death Bomb to try. It was nearly a reload situation and I barely made it out alive ... we will try that one again next trip I think I might have knocked about 10-15 HP off him.

p.s. I had planned to work Sparkle up to the front of the party, during the breeders battle, then have one of the Valjyries push her in the door (and let her die). Imagine my disappointment, after winning, when I realized I forgot that part of the battle Anyhow, I upgraded ... dismissed her and recruited Madras.

5. "What are you thinking?"
Why would you want to get poor little Sparkle killed?

I like her, althought sometimes she does get a little irratating.

Three pure casters is a lot of fun. Like you, I have found that most enemies are too distracted after the first round to be much of a threat.

6. "A little irritating?"
What is really funny is that I never knew Sparkle was a she (being the first Trynnie I had met). I figured they were all "like that". My (then) 4 year old son said something about "her" while watching me play ... I said that's a boy. He said, no, it's a girl ... so, I went to show him how we decide gender in Wiz 8 ... I had yet to realize the roles were now transposed ... I was now the father, not the kid who is always right

As to Sparkle, I usually make it a point of killing her, just for being so annoying

8. "Don't mix Trynnie and Mushrooms"
A while back, we were on our way back to Arnika, from Trynton, after adding Madras to our party. He suggested a slight detour to our Alchemist, to pick some choice mushrooms near the Trynton/Arnika cemetary.

Next thing we know, we are thrown into some dank dungeon, where we all must have halucinated, because we all swear we remember both Madras and Saxx dying at the hands of this ghost named Baron Englund ... in completely different battles.

Against our better judgement, we sampled some more mushrooms after killling the baron's ghost a third time (just like the old saying: The 3rd time's a Blarneystone Amulet, or something like that). Luckily, the last batch of mushrooms seemed to bring us all back to our senses, and back into the daylight.

(Out of Context - what really happened)

Madras or Saxx had died due to my inattention during the last battle (shouldn't watch TV, talk to the wife and play Wizardry at the same time ). So, reloaded. The next time, the other one died in the last round of battle (again, not paying real close attention). I was going to just resurrect, but hit ESC to pause the game for a few minutes. When I came back, I clicked "OK", without really thinking or reading the message ... and quit the game, not having saved the last battle results. So, third time was the charm, everyone lived, and we have just (I think) finished the Northern Retro Dungeon.

9. "The Rapax crossroads"
Well, we have successfully acquired all three artifacts. The decision now lies in how to proceed. Ilo, the Psionic, our self-proclaimed seer, "sees" two paths for us to follow.

1. Head for the Rapax castle to gain access to Savant's tower and disarm his bomb

or

2. Head for the Rapax Away camp to scout for the missing T'rang and Umpani members, and hope to find them and unite them in our common cause.

We all voted and it was decided we should strive for option 2.

The problem, or real crux, seems to be the fabled Templar initiation. It appears to be the only thing that will make the Rapax King trust us enough to gain access to the stockade key. Even on pain of death, he will currently not part with it.

So, shall we forsake our chosen path of uniting the Umpani and T'rang with us agianst the Savant and one of us taint ourselves with the touch of demon flesh? Or, go forsake these two scouts and go it alone.

The decision weighs heavy ....

(out of character)

Oooooh, I am so PO'd that I can not get the stockade key, even by killing the king ... after having snuck into the Away camp w/o a fight. I wasn't to thrilled that my portal I had left here, ended me right next to the Rapax Queen ... locked up behind the gate Doh!

10. "This week's Rapax weather forecast ..."
.. calls for an unusually high amount of precipitation, due to unseasonal Tsunamis, Blizzards and even Iceballs reported in the Rift and Castle areas.

Officials claim, "It is all due to a natural shift in the Dominus polar icecaps and has absolutely nothing to due with a band of adventurers reported 'storming the castle'."
