LAST EDITED ON Jun-05-05 AT 01:22 AM (Pacific)It's been a couple years since I tried, but generally the best order for me was Dionysceus first, then Orkogre Castle, then Munkharama, then Rattkin Ruins, then finish Xen Xheng's flowers ASAP and track him down with Locate Person. Get Humpawhammer access in Ukpyr if you need to take a shortcut to New City. I don't think it matters much after that. I honestly don't believe the idea that simply going to a location causes a map disappear, simply because of two reasons.
Reason 1:
I have a VERY difficult time with the Lord of the Dark Forest encounter (way too many monk munks throwing status stuff out) on expert mode, but can save/reload it to an easy fight on easy mode. So at one point when I was charging through the game, I changed it from expert to easy at that point, breezed through the rest of the area there and found the ?CRYPT? map there. So I reset back and went to XP in the area to level up. By the time I was finally able to beat the Lord of the Dk. Forest encounter on expert mode, map was taken and Brother TShober was selling it.
Reason 2:
If you get Locate Person early (easy to do with a Psionic, or if you find a scroll and put 1 point in Scribe), you can see where every single NPC is without any effort using save/reloads. I have only had maps disappear on me when an NPC was in the same area as one, although just because an NPC was in an area didn't mean the map would be gone.
So, IMO, it's not that going to a location that makes a map go away, it's what active NPCs are running around that can make the map go away. Thus, in my opinion when I tried it, if you've activated a lot of NPCs who aren't killing each other, the more time you waste the less maps you are likely to get. I HAVE gotten all the maps before, although I did use Holy Sacrament to cut down on grief that time, because trying to get Xen Xheng's flower quest done fast is a major pain in the ass.
Edit: Just got reminded about the Old City one from reading posts. I don't remember when I got that map--I may have used the Archives shortcut on that as well. The game is most likely designed so that you can only get all the maps without buying from, stealing from, or killing the NPCs if you know where they are beforehand.
