"changing character portraits?"
Does anyone know how to change the character portraits in-game? I can easily load up the existing ones, and I save them with the same amount of colors (keeping the file size, etc. the same), but invariably when I load up the new pictures in the game the whole color scheme for that portrait gets screwed up. This even happens if I take an existing portrait and make minor changes to it, the entire picture goes nuts. Ideas anyone?

After a few times through the game, it would be nice to have a bit more variety in what faces I'm looking at. There are some nice pics on sites for other games (neverwinter, baldur's gate, etc), if only there was a way to use them...

What game are you talking about? W7?
You can use CosmicForge editor to change portraits.

Hmm, I hadn't realized that was an option.

<browsing the site>

Yep, I'm using an old version.

<installing the new version>

Hmm, I see the option... though for some reason I can't find an option to load in the portraits? (I see the edit menu, just no way to browse the existing portraits. I can edit all other in-game pics just fine though.)

Also, is there any way to load someone else's existing pic in? I presume I could do it by copying to the clipboard & importing via the editor?

As a side note, may I shamelessly note that you have written the best ever game editor I've seen in my life for any game ever, and I've seen more than a few? :> If I ever get my FAQ finished, it will have been in no small part due things learned by using the editor!

I don't understand you.
What does "though for some reason I can't find an option to load in the portraits?" means?

You do not need to *LOAD* portraits. Just run the editor. Select menu Image Editors->Portrait Editor and modify them. Don't forget to save when you finished.

You cannot add more portraits. W7 has 32 portrait. This is a maximum, because this number is hardcoded.

... that he does not want to edit, but load in pics from another source. For instance, find a pic you like somewhere and "import" it ino the game, rather than editing one to look like the pic you want.

You are both correct. I was trying to copy someone else's picture in, but ran out of time before I got around to trying the clipboard idea. I've since tried it, and it does work, though I have to maintain the number of colors, so I can't use most pictures I have available. Still, not a crisis.

My main difficulty is that I can't see the standard character portraits. In all the other picture editing menus, I have a scroll-down window on the left side where I select the picture to be edited. In the character portrait menu, I have a blank white window (and no scroll bar) on the left side. I assume that this is intended to show the existing portraits, but unfortunately, my copy does not. I have no idea why not, though maybe it's due to my running Wizardry Gold?

If we can't track down the cause, I think I should be able to work around it. I can edit other pictures, so I can rename a few portraits to monster file names, edit them, and rename them back, and that should probably work.

Re: the 32 character limit: I had a feeling that might be the case (I tried adding more files, with no effect), but it's good to have it confirmed.

Thanks!

Ok. that explains the problem: Wiz Gold.
Gold does not use portdata.vga used by dos version. So editor does not show portrait. I should remove that menu for GOLD version, but let it be as is.

Instead, Gold uses BMP files in folders .\RES\BITS\PCB and .\RES\BITS\PCA. You should have a program capable of modifying bitmap files without changing their palette. My editor does not allow to modify bitmaps because it is out of his purpose.

8. "Here is what I remember ....."
1) create a copy of the picture you want to replace (in case you mess up)

2) create a bitmap, 120x110 ? or 110x120 ? of your new picture. It must be the same size as the existing picture.

3) using mspaint, open the picture you want to replace

4) Edit / Paste from / select your new picture. Paste the new picture INTO the old one.

5) Look at the picture. The colors are all screwed up. This is because Wiz Gold has a pre-set color palette and when you paste into it, mspaint picks the closest color in the Wiz Gold palette.

6) If you can't stand the picture, choose another one and try again.

7) If the picture is OK, exit and run Wiz Gold.

Hmm. It seems the key would be to be able to redefine a pallete. If there was a way to shuffle around the preset color so that they match wizgold, then it should work. It shouldn't even be too much work (given that wizgold probably only uses 16 colors - or does it use 256?), the question is how to do it...

Thanks for the input!
