"CoDS on Windows 98"
With a little help, I was recently able to get Crusaders running on my computer with XP using dosbox. But after every sound in the game there is a sort of "fuzz" noise, and changing framerate and frameskip do not seem to fix this.

So, I decided to try CoDS on my 98 computer, and with a homemade divide overflow patch which I found (the original did not work) I am able to run the game in DOS.

The problem I have is, the game says the mouse and music are all enabled, but only the keyboard works and no music or sounds play. Is there something I have to enable in order to get these to work in DOS?

I don't know if this helps, but I have a version that plays directly from the CD, but it works just fine without the CD when copied to the computer, which is how I am running it on XP, since it was hard for me to find the game, and I don't want to wear down my CD over time.

Any help is appreciated.

Can you boot directly into DOS on your Windows 98 computer? If that's possible, you most likely have to include some mouse driver in your config.sys or autoexec.bat file (if you don't have a DOS mouse driver around, I think there's a free one called cutemouse available), and probably also a line like

SET blaster = something something (depending on your sound card)

in your autoexec.bat.

Many years ago, and a place far away........

I had Wiz7 running on a Pentium 350 and Win98. To get the sound working correctly, pretty sure you must have the legacy dos drivers and soundblaster card. Seems like I had to write a bat file to load the sound drivers and start the game and ran it in dos mode. It was quite a bit of trouble but when I finally got everything working, the game ran the best ever.

I have had execellent results with my Pent 1.8 and dosbox. The game runs flawlessly. If you have a soundblaster card, you may consider disableing the onboard sound and using the card to fix your sound problem.

Well, after trying many different options, I've given up on the idea of using windows 98 with CoDS for now. It runs fine under windows XP, except for some minor problems with the sound effects when set to PC Speaker.

There is an extra dull clicking sound that usually happens after an effect plays, and sometimes before a sound plays. There are not many settings for PC Speaker in dosbox, so if anyone knows what might remedy this minor sound problem, I would be grateful.

Also, music is set to sound blaster and works just fine with no problems as far as I can tell.

Hey man, it's Chris... I just remembered something about that, and it might end up helping you.

In the conf file, scroll down to the Speaker section and down to the pcrate part of it. There will be a number there, probably 22050 which is how I set it in your copy of the file.

Mess with that number. Divide it by 2, then by 4, then try multiplying by 2 and 4. Use each result as the new rate and test the sounds after that.

Let me know what happens.
Chris
