"Playstation version / some new issues and challenges"
I have been a huge fan of Wizardry 7 (both the original and the Gold version) for the PC ever since the games were released. I always come back to Wizardry 7 every year or so because it is the most satisfying RPG experience ever.

As I am living in Japan and studying Japanese, I decided to try the Japanese release of Crusaders for the Playstation-- I wanted to see if there were any differences, and enjoy my favorite game with a new set of graphics and music. Overall, it seems to me as though the game is exactly the same as the original (besides the reinvention of the graphics, translational differences, and new music), but there are a few interesting differences.

Character creation is much easier and faster. You can cancel the character at any point during creation by simply pushing one button-- as soon as you choose the character's name, race, and gender and see that your desired class is not available, you can instantly cancel the creation and start again, without having to distribute points, choose a picture, seal your karma, etc. Also I've noticed that very high rolls (19-26) come up often enough so that you can create a team of six members using only super-high rolls (23-26) in under two hours! I even threw out some 26-point characters because I didn't like their karma ratings and knew I could just create them again in a few minutes, with another chance at getting the karma I liked.

This game also has a very convenient, and non-intrusive auto-mapping feature that I like more than the one on Wizardry Gold.

You may have read or heard this somewhere, but Bela is also included in this game as an enounter in the Greater Wilds-- if you defeat him, you have the chance to earn some of the unique items from Bane, since it is impossible to import a Bane party on the Playstation. Also I have read on a Japanese site that some extra treasures are sprinkled throughout the game, such as a Diamond Ring in a hidden room of the Dane Tower.

One major change to this version is relations with NPC's. Conversations are conducted through menus and choices, which is nice because you don't have to bother typing anything and there is always a list of suggestions that will provoke interesting responses. However, the problem with this is that if you haven't discovered a password or learned a key phrase yet, it does not apppear on the menu. For example, in New City you have to ask the innkeeper about the weapons shop before you can choose to mention the black market to the Umpani weapons dealer and initiate an exchange. I think this makes the game more challenging and balanced, so that you always have to go through the game in the correct order and you don't have to write down any messages.

However-- my one concern is that I will not be able to take the Legend Map immediately upon entering New City because I will not have learned of the sacrament yet, and thus cannot tell Father Rulae. I don't mind hunting down or buying the map later in the game, but I am afraid that Don Barlone will end up with it, with Mick the Pick and Ratsputin dead, and I will be stuck in the game. Is there any foolproof way to prevent this from happening? Is there a way to attack him once he has it, or make it so that he never has access to the map before I even meet him? I am willing to sacrifice access to his treasure horde in return for the peace of mind of knowing that I won't have to restart my game.

1. "No guarantees"
As we saw when Wizardry VII became the Gold version, all was not gold They fixed some things that were broken, broke others that were not, and gave us new features (automap).

Since this game is slightly different than both previous versions, we can only hope these were good programmers, developers, engineers (and other fellow geeks) and they accounted for the pitfalls of the previous versions. Play on, find out and tells us what you find. It does allow you to save your game, right? Hopefully in more than one spot.

Is this game just for the Japapnese PS, or will it play in America as well? How about on a PS2?

I did not care much for Wizardry Gold-- but at least it revived my interest in the game. I didn't like how cartoony the new character icons were, as they just didn't match the rest of the game (why didn't they redo all of the graphics?) I liked the automapping feature a lot, but it was kind of intrusive. For the Playstation version, there is a special place on the screen where the automap always appears, between the six orbs for spells like Enchanted Blade, Armorplate, etc. It is tiny, but does the trick.

Yes, you can save your game at any time, as in the original. It appears as though you can make as many save files as you need, if you're willing to give up the memory blocks. It does however take a few seconds to save/load your game, but luckily if you press the L2 button it goes straight to the save/load screen.

This game is just for the Japanese PS, or the Japanese PS2. I'm pretty sure it won't play on a US console unless you have a mod chip. You also need to have a PS memory card, either US or Japanese is fine.

Here are some more differences I've discovered in the game. Picking the locks on doors and disarming treasure chests has also been simplified into an automatic menu. It's easier because all you have to do is click the button (once for doors, twice for chests-- once to try to identify the trap, and once more to disarm it) but somehow I prefer the original method because at least you can watch the red, yellow, and green flashes and have some idea what your chances are of success. My level 5 Ninja is still having trouble, but I want to know my chances at least.

I just read on a Japanese website that on the Playstation version, if you have a character with high enough Intelligence and Dexterity ratings, they can automatically learn the Skulduggery skill when they try to unlock a door or chest. This can be useful in case you don't want a ninja, thief, bard, or ranger in your party, or you would rather a faster-developing character specialize in the skill. I think this is also more true to the nature of the game-- for example, in the instruction manual, it says that intelligence affects your ability to learn new skills. You can learn the Diplomacy skill by having high enough Personality and Intelligence ratings, but that is the only skill I know of that you can acquire through Intelligence in the PC versions. Learning Skulduggery through having Intelligence and Dexterity seems like a good idea because it gives you a chance to make your party more flexible and versatile, and makes the instruction manual live up to its word.

just like weaponry skills, diplomacy and Legerdemain in the PC version, where if you succeed, you get one point in the skill, and it shows up in the Skills listing in the character's review screen, and thus allows you to increase it during level ups. sadly, ninjutsu requires the character be able to hide, to learn it, while the magic skills and kirijutsu need manual level-up point additions. couldn't unlock a door or untrap a chest with 0 skill, however, so I don't know if the PC version could do it.
I don't know if Intelligence affects skill learning in Wiz 7, however, although my mages seemed to max oratory first, before my priests (who almost always had 18 Int and Pie, respectively, some even high in both areas, at the start)

5. "RE: No guarantees"
From my experience playing the PC version, successfully performing an action does not guarantee that you will get a point in that proficiency, and it does not guarantee that the skill will be added to your list. Other factors determine whether or not the skill will be on your list, and that skill will usually appear as a 0.

For example, Priests have no Wand and Dagger weapon proficiency. However, if you have a Faerie Priest or Bishop, they can of course equip the Pixie Stick (a Wand and Dagger type weapon) but no matter how many times you attack with it, your Priest will not develop the Wand and Dagger weaponry skill.

You can try to have a successful diplomatic session with an NPC, and with the help of the Charm spell and a bribe, you may be successful, but you will not develop the diplomacy skill. If you have an INT of 13 and a PER of 14, though, the diplomacy skill will appear in your academia list with a rating of 0 before you even try to negotiate.

I play Wiz Gold, if that affects anything, but I noticed, my pure Faerie Monk, after equipped with the Light Sword (figured since he could use it, why not?), gained points in sword, through practice. being at level 24 or so might have helped, too, with the max stats, as well.
if and only if a skill, like Sword for a Monk or legerdemain for any non-thief/ranger/ninja, is at least 1, will it stay. in other words, if you neglect to increase legerdemain, or don't bother hiding or putting points into ninjutsu ever, if you change class, that skill disappears, and in the latter case, permemently until you class change to a thief, ranger, bard, monk, or ninja.

I don't know how much a used Japanese PS2 costs, but you may have to have one shipped over from Japan. If you are really interested, I can sell you one of mine (I have two because I won one at an arcade).

It took a bit of effort for me to find this game-- I had to have it once I learned of its existence. I looked in vain through countless piles and shelves of used PS games at several large second-hand stores in Tokyo, but in the end I bought my copy on E-bay from a guy in Italy for a few dollars.

8. "RE: Playstation (PSX) JP Import"
Just got this game in the mail.
I'm yet to try and play it through my PC via emulation, but just thought I'd comment:

The Manual is AWESOME. Its in Japanese (obviously) which I can't read at all, but it has some great diagrams and maps, inluding one of the starting area, and the New City.

The graphics look way cool, 3D characters abounding.

Cool minature version of the original map of Lost Guardia, but with some alterations..

Anyway, hopefully the interface doesn't vary too much from the original, otherwise it'll be hit and miss for a while. But I'll be sure to document anything I discover. Would like to document the differences fully (especially regarding extra items not found in the original) so I could edit them back into the PC version...
