"'Text too fast' fix is here"
Just like most of you I found the text speed way too fast on WizGold. My feelings ranged from mildly aggravated to down right pissed. I came here hoping someone had a fix, but had no luck. A lot of creative thinking, but nothing I could work with on my PC. I am just not that ‘geekish’.

So here is my solution. It will change your text delay setting to 254, which is slow enough that you can almost read it as it scrolls (if you are quick). You can definitely catch the entire ‘conversation’ if you use the space bar.

Please bear with me. I am only a wanna-be geek so I will go step by step.

Step 1 – In your wizgold folder find these two files and make a backup copy (just in case.) I am assuming that you installed the game in the default folder

C:\Wizgold\Disk.HDR
C:\Wizgold\Scenario.HDR

You will only be modifying the second file but you have to open the first to get the proper symbol.

Step 2 – Start CDS and change your text delay speed to 100. This will make your values look like my example and make the later steps easier to follow. When you are done close the game.

Step 3- Open Command Prompt (yes this fix is in Dos)
In dos – type EDIT

With the mouse click FILE at the top of the screen and select OPEN

You are going to have to find your Wizgold folder
Click on the .. at the top of the of the right hand portion of the window that list directories until you have no more ..’s to hit. If you put Wizgold in the default directory you should see it now. Double click on the folder and you should see a list of files in the left hand portion of the screen.

Step 4 - In the bottom right hand portion of the screen there is an option to open as binary. Click this. Then change the ‘line with’ to 426

Then double click DISK.HDR

Step 5 – Select VIEW at the top of the screen. In the drop down window select ‘split screen’

You should end up with the screen spit in half with the top half and the bottom half identical.

Use the mouse to click the bottom half – you should see the file name in the middle of the screen become highlighted

Step 6 – Go back to the drop down menus and click FILE and then select OPEN

Make sure that the ‘open binary’ option is still selected.
Change the ‘Line Width’ to 836

Double click SCENARIO.HDR

What you should end up with is the top half of the edit screen being DISK.HDR
And the bottom half of the edit screen being SCENARIO.HDR

Step 7- In the top half (Disk.HDR)
The first symbol in the second row is the one you want. It looks like a little filled in rectangle standing on end. Use the mouse to highlight the symbol. On the bottom right corner of the screen it should read

Value: 254

Press Ctrl C or select EDIT and COPY to copy this symbol

On the bottom half of the screen (SCENARIO.HDR) the first symbol in the second row should be

d

if you set your text delay speed to 100 and used a line width of 836. If you do not see it close SCENARIO.HDR and redo step 2 and/or check your line with.

Highlight the d and use Ctrl V or EDIT and Paste to replace the d with the rectangle.

Step 8- Select FILE and hit SAVE. Close everything out and restart Wizardry 8

When you check your game settings it should read a text delay speed of 254

Note: This is a backward crazy half baked fix. If you lower your setting even one point, you cannot go back up without having to go through this whole process again. So don’t mess with it.

Hope it works for you. If you have questions let me know.

Quick note:

This is a fix for WizGold. I do not know if it works on CODS.

Also, I am running Windows XP with a 1.4GHZ processor. If your processor is faster it may not slow the text down enough to be usefull.

I am looking at fixing the settings so that you can change the default sound settings. I hate changing them everytime I start; but that is actually a much larger project as I do not know which file controls them. It is not the Scenario.hdr file and that is all I know on the subject.

Very nice idea!

CODS does not need that fix, because it has normal text speed (I think, anyway I never experienced any problems with text in CODS).

Oh for the days when one could claim to be a geek simply on the basis of taking AP Calculus and owning an HP (that's calculater, not computer).

Just a wanna be geek. It was a pretty easy fix. It took about 4 hours to come up with the fix and most of that was spent trying to figure out why the game kept crashing when I plugged in the value manually...thus the cut and paste fix.

Luckily I grew up on old old comp's, long before this fancy new 'Windows' fad I learned by typing, and tying, and typing, and......., so most of my attempted game fixes are via the dos editor.

I just wish I could push the value above 255. But the game is old and that appears to be the limit.

P.S. 255 is the empty space to the right of the rectangle in DISK.HDR. I did not use it in my example for obvious reasons.

6. "RE: Works greatly - another ways of changing it"
Wow nice job on finding it.

Ok to simplify the copy paste part you can just do the second part with a little variation:

1. make a backup copy of scenario.hdr save it as scenario.bak or whatever (just prudence)
2. make sure your Num Lock is On... (the num pad light must be on)
3. open the scenario.hdr in binary mode with 832 width using edit as stated above.
4. delete the first character on the second row and insert a new character using the combination ALT+254...just position the cursor below the first character, press del and then by keeping the left ALT key pressed and type 2 5 4 using only the numerical num pad (WHILE NUM LOCK IS ON).

Another way, for those familiar with hex editors: change the value at address 0x344h to FE.

PS.: Haven't tried 255 (FF hex) value, but possibly can work too...

7. "Great work!"
I recently got WizGold working, and I need to slow down the text speed. I am horribly inept tech-wise, and I wondered how easy this fix is.

Would the files be the same on all computers? If so, I may see if one of my techish friends can help me out. Please enlighten me if possible. Again, great job on this!

Dave

Like Dave, I'm a computor challenged. I'm running wizgold on an XP system, and I'm lost at step 3 since XP doesn't have Dos.
Can anyone explain in simple terms how you do the prompt in Dos so I can slow the text down?
Also, I was frustrated enough so that I downloaded Dos box and actually got wiz 7 up and running(from the ultimate wizardry version), but the game won't save. I get the save prompt, used the default save file, but it won't save. Any thoughts?

for the Wizgold fix, open up an MS-DOS prompt, by start -> run -> CMD
then type Edit and follow the rest of the instructions. thankfully, MS included Edit.com with XP.

10. "Thanks guys"
I have been away (working) for awhile. I originally put this fix on so that when I start playing again, I would remember how to slow the text down. I didn't really realize that there were still people playing that needed to view the text. Most of you are old timers that know the game by heart, text be dammned. So, anyways, thanks Rfaul and Dragon2K for keeping this post current and accurate.

Thanks for the help! It worked quite well. You gave great directions as this newbie to DOS was able to do it!

Hi,

I tried your fix and now it says text delay speed 254, but it's still as fast as before. or maybe slower, but unreadable and nearly impossible to time with the space bar.

cheers,
mike

hi,

it works now, you just gotta watch to use the original wizardry.exe and don't apply the patches - at least I think that's what made it work for me.

cheers,
mike

LAST EDITED ON Oct-03-06 AT 07:30 PM (Pacific)

This is a just a hunch, but do you get the same symbol when you hold down the alt button and press 254 before releasing the alt button? Because it sounds an awful lot like the ASCII symbols you can get with ALT + (3 digit number combination)

You may have to start with a 0 before the 3 digits as well. It's been a long time.

Tried this on my old 1 gig machine as well as my new rig and It did not work on either. It DOES change the displayed setting to 254 but seems to have no real effect on the actual speed of the text and the space bar does nothing.
