"Welcome - Intro and a few tips"
First order of business - Thank You! To all who showed their support and voiced their confidence - because of you, we have this forum.

Hopefully, as a user of this board, you will be 1/10 as impressed as I was by the features it has. Every time I turn around, I find my self saying "awesome", "cool" or some such antiquated term
As soon as I get some free time I want to add a "Drool" icon.

Rather than try and start with a comprehensive list of tips, I figure I'd give the basics and let the rest be posted as questions and I (or others) can answer them as they arise.

1. "Tip #1 - register"
It will give you access to many features:
(here are a few)
1) Identity - no one else can post under your name. Unregistered posts have a "-ur" tacked on the end of the Poster's name
2) Editing your previously posted messages
3) Subscription to a form (which allows you to receive, via email, all a day's posts for the forum(s)/board(s) of your choice.

Once you are registered, you can choose the "Remember password" option and not have to login every time you visit the board.

I consider all you're information confidential - it stays with me, I don't sell it.

2. "Tip #2 - Reading (and Marking) new messages"
(another feature for registered users)
Afte you select a forum, you will notice a clock icon labeled "Mark" on the next screen.

Selecting this marks all messages in that forum as "read". Until you do so, every time you visit all messages that show as "New" will remain so.

This is the only feature so far that I am not 100% satified with. But one of the great things about this board is it is (fairly) easily modified and many people share their changes in other DCForums.

Where this feature (again for registered users) is really nice, though, is when you enter the board and choose "Read New messages", then mark all as "read".

3. "Tip #3 - Who can post"
In public forums (which I hope to keep all the forums "public") any one - registered or not, logged in or not, can post.

In protected forums, should we decide we need one, only registered users (that are logged in) can post messages. Anyone can read them, though.

There is one other level of forum, called private. This has a couple further restrictions that can be applied and can be hidden from "public" view. What that really means is only the members of that private board can use it (or even see that it exists).

I can't see needing one of this flavor any time soon.

4. "Tip #4 - what to post"
(I plan to add this post - or something very similar - to the email notification received when people register. I'll basically call it a "terms of use" statement.)

This board has "bad word" filters and I employed them. If your attempted post contains one, the system will let you know. If you find you are being unjustly censored, let me know (by emailing "admin") and I'll see what can be done.

It is my intent for this forum to be a place of mutual respect and admiration, somewhere you can come for help, to share ideas, brag about your characters....

Differing opinions are good, it often opens our eyes, or at least shifts our view, to a new idea or way of thinking.

Criticism, other than the constructive type, is not really needed here (or anywhere, I can think of). If you have a real "beef" with someone, there are other forms of communication you should utilize.

Hopefully, that sets the "tone" for this board and little, if anything, else will have to be said on the matter.

5. "Tip #5 - Reading new messages"
When you enter the forum, you will note a "Read New Messages" option, near the upper left hand corner. This is a great time saver - for me anyway, and I need all the timesavers I can get

Choosing it allows you to get an overview of all the topics, that have new messages in all forums.
From that screen, I right click each topic and open it in a new window (that's the Netscape, I don't know about MS IE). From that new window, I can see what posts are new in that topic and read them. This saves me from having to go to each forum and view all the messages, just to get to the new ones.

When I have done this with all the topics, I close down all the windows. When I get back to the "Reading new or recent messages" screen, I press "Mark all" and I'm done (until my next visit). That marks all messages as read in all the forums shown.

It's a really slick system. The only fault I have for it, is (as Lord Gram pointed out on the interim board) that is doesn't mark your own newly posted messages as "read" - they are new when you come back.

I will email the author of the board software (after searching the support forum) for a fix to this.

7. "Tip #5 - Reading new messages - addendum"
Being a bit slow, I just realized that in most threaded views of a topic, that there is a number to the right of the subect line, denoting the order in which the individual thread was posted. This also makes it easy to pick out the most recent (sometimes *new*, though not all views note them as so - for now) messages.

FYI

6. "Tip #6 - using DCForum email"
There is a feature to send registered users an email, via clicking the icon, near the header of the message.
Another great feature, because it will send this as a somewhat "anonymous" email, in that it hides your email address, by using mine (admin@softwarespecialties.com).

In the received email, you will find a link that will allow you to reply to whoever sent the email, again via the forum email.

What this basically accomplishes, is it allows to board users to converse via email, without seeing each others email addresses.

NOTE: For this option to work, you have:
1) be online and logged into the forum, or
2) have used the "remember password" feature on your last visit (and not chosen logout)

This may be changed in later releases, so you don't have to be logged in first. There is also a hack (though untested) available to have the email address sent as the sender's, rather than mine. Until I get feedback on if and how people are using this, and what they do or don't like about how it works - I won't be changing it.

8. "Tip # 7 - Quicker access to new messages (& other features)"
For those "on-the-go", with no time to spend dilly-dallying around in the lobby, you can bookmark the "Read New Messages" page.

The same holds true for any board of particular interest, or even a particular message. You can basically bookmark anywhere you are in the board - even where I am now, in reply mode. Of course, unless you planned on responding a lot to one message, that would be (silly)

9. "Tip #8 - Quotes not allowed in subject line"
As Marc pointed out in another post, DCForums puts quotes (") around the subject of messages. As such, when you put in quotes, it chops off the rest of your subject line.

10. "Tip #9 - Changing Subscriptions"
To add or remove subscriptions (to one or more forums) Choose:

User->Subscribe to Forums

Then, you can check (or uncheck) any forum to subscribe or unsuscribe.
