"more gigs"

Posted by joan212 (Guest) on Nov-14-01 at 02:32 AM
I can't stand the thought of this board being minimized just at this time when we all want to celebrate together. $100 a month is a lot of money for one person to come up with for a "hobby", well avocation is really a better word, in any event, there are 380 registered users on the board. If only 1/2 of us sent you $10 that would give us an extra 10 gigs for more than a year. Spread out that way it is not much...a six pack of good beer, am elegant lunch for two at any fast food place. I would sure be williing to do that for something that has been and I am sure will continue to give me so much pleasure...and to not allow visitors to post is kind of like chasing hungry children away from the window of your bakery. Give me an address, or maybe to protect your privacy for a month get a PO box, and I will send you $10 in the form of cash, check or money order.. Anybody else want to climb his particular bandwagaon? joan, self appointed knight of Software Sciences Wizardy Board (and remember that a board is an old word for a table on which a meal is spread for all to help themselves)

I'll join in, even double the amount to $20.00

And much appreciated, but really unfair. Both of you have been here using the board for a long time (and are great assets). Now there is a great influx of traffic from new (and welcome) users, though many unregistered that may cause us pain. I hardly see it as fair, that you should pay for upkeep caused by others.

It would be like you have a driveway and use it all the time. Suddenly a new restaurant goes in next to your house and everyone starts using your driveway. Now you have to pay to maintain it due to too much traffic. You would much likely put up a toll gate (or since this is America, sue the restaurant, the zoning commission, the traffickers, your dog, ... )

It would seem much more "fair" to require everyone to register and everyone to pay, though I am not about to go that route.

After reading (and replying to) the messages this morning, it got me thinking. If people want to conrtibute, why not let them. Though my motives have never been completely altruistic, maybe there are some folks out there who are.

Who am I to say they can't help out? I think it is a *man* thing ... I've been running it on my own, no (financial) help from anybody, ... well you know the rest

The response (from all that have responded to my board email yesterday) has been a bit of a shock to me (though given our long standing relationship, it really shouldn't have) - everyone wants to keep things wide open and would pay to do so (more than would really be needed, I think).

As the 10 Gig barrier draws nearer, we will see what needs to be done.

Thanks all I will keep you posted.

But let's have no more of this (for now anyway). I truly do appreciate your support and enthusiasm, but until a reall decision is made on how to proceed, let's take it a step at a time.

I want to try and "ride out" this month and see what traffic does. Then guage what we are looking at for the "long haul" and go from there ... probably start with donations and see how that works out.

Again, thanks to all who replied and offered suggestions (and especially $$$$ ) What a great group of people we have here.

small suggestion, Llevram - disable images in posts, they take a while to load, and all thoses images add up in a hurry

Do you mean like screen shots, or just these little one I would hate to take away the little stuff, like all the board and emotion icons, though you are right - they do add up.

It's just so much a part of the board, it would be hard to part with.

I would think that the emotion icons wouldn't take up too much space. Aren't there just a single set of them? And they get called by some html whenever someone puts an emotion in? So each post just has a few extra words in their post... not such a big deal. Plus, shouldn't they be cached by browsers? Or do browsers still request the information that's cached, but just display the cached version?

to elaborate, disable images in posts that are on other web sites. images on the whole software specialties site are fine
that is, if someone adds an image tag, that the Software Specialties server transmits the image, i.e. this board uses up part of its bandwith for those large images
Smilies are perfectly fine, and add a certain flair to these boards X-\

I already posted an announcement to that effect in the lobby, after I saw someone post the first Wiz 8 screen shot a couple days ago.

Basically, it is OK to post a link to a page that has a picture, just not to the picture.

good, I was suggesting temporarily disabling the forum code for images, so no one could post an image here, assuming it could be done?
links to them are good, the server doesn't have to send 100K+ to everyone who reads that page, and the page loads faster. So, everyone wins

Also, once "everyone" figures out the commmonly asked questions, one of us could send a FAQ over to GameFAQs to hopefully alleviate the traffic here. Of course, the problem is finding the someone who is willing to deal with an email filled beyond capacity.

But since I have been gone from here for a few months and my signatures were rather small...all under 50k. Imagine my surprise that my pictures on my PAID website were no longer allowed here.

WELL EXCUSE ME...

I have been in the friggin hospital for a while now and no one told me that 50k or less was going to cause bandwidth problems. Yes, I am slightly cheesed off.

You will have to excuse me Rick...but my sigs are an important part of who I am and I am taking offense. I tried to make sure that my tiny sigs didn't offend or be too large to load. I am not crazy about being punished for what others do by posting screen shots.

I will be back when and if my tiny sigs are allowed here again. Chow all!!

Lady Adrexia

Since my tiny sigs were causing bandwidth problems...they have been removed from here and my site...

This really surprises me. I hope this was just your having a bad day Lady Adrexia. And I hope, whatever sent you to the hospital, that you are okay now.

No one asked Rick in the beginning to make this board or if he needed help to make it happen. He did it on his own so he and we (those who abandoned the old VNboard when there was no moderator) could have somewhere to go to talk about a series of games we obviously love to play. I really don't understand all the anger being spewed here. None of the changes made to this board have been personal. Just Rick trying to keep it up and running for us.

Rick, if you need help (money) to keep this board going I too would be willing to help with what I can. I think you and Marc are doing a fine job considering there is nothing more in it for you than there is for us (except the aggravation of trying to run the damn thing).

"About ready to pass the plate"
Posted by Llevram on Dec-28-01 at 06:12 PM
Well, Jersey you are right it was nothing personal. If it was possible, I would gladly allow your sigs, Lady A, I always enjoyed them. The problem was really the non-conformists, those that kept putting pix in their posts, despite our bandwidth inspired pleas not too .... so everyone else suffers.

And since I had to buy another couple gigs to finish this month (on top of the extra I bought last month) ... we are now running at a monthly cost (excluding the board software and yearly maintenance) of about $75. Notice I said "we"

Before I forget, thanks to Marc for stepping up to the admin plate!

And speaking of plates (one soon may be passed), I will send an email soon asking for opinions on how the board should proceed.
